Tolleson will be checked out by Dr. Keith Meister in person Friday, before the club establishes a plan moving forward. The right-hander has been sidelined since March 20 with the issue.

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(4:01 pm ET) Tigers pitcher Joe Nathan suffered a broken thumbnail while pitching Thursday, which caused a cut on his thumb, reports MLB.com.

Nathan gave up a game-tying home run Thursday and he has surrendered a home run in each of his last two outings. Despite Nathan's struggles, manager Brad Ausmus said he was sticking with Nathan as the team's closer, reports the Detroit News.

Rays' Cash hopes that Souza can make an impact at the plate in 2015
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3:57 pm ET) Rays manager Kevin Cash said he believes outfielder Steven Souza can make a major impact at the plate this season after hitting .350 with 18 home runs and 75 RBI for Triple-A Syracuse, per MLB.com.

Souza was traded in December from Washington to Tampa Bay. He hit .130 with two home runs and two RBIs in 21 at-bats during his three separate stints last season for the Nationals.

"Yeah, I hope so," Cash said. "I think when you say that you're asking a lot of a guy who doesn't have much experience at this level. But we do very much like what he's done at Triple-A and everything he's done since being here. But the last thing we want him to think is that he has to come in and carry it."

Cubs' Lester says he has a 'normal day' during minor-league outing
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:49 pm ET) Cubs starting pitcher Jon Lester threw 54 pitches in a minor-league game Thursday, per MLB.com. Lester gave up one hit and one walk, while striking out three of the 12 batters he faced.

Thursday was the first time Lester pitched in a game since being scratched last week due to a tired arm. Lester is scheduled to make one more start before the season opener (April 5) against the Cardinals, but he doesn't know yet if it will be another minor-league game or he will pitch in a major-league spring game.

“Today was good, today was a normal day,” Lester said. “[I’ll] come back tomorrow and go about work again.”

Cardinals OF Matt Holliday looking to avoid another slow start
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:27 pm ET) By Matt Holliday's standards, the Cardinals outfielder's 2014 season didn't quite measure up to previous seasons. Although, the 35-year-old outfielder refuses to blame his decline in production on his age.

"It was one of those things where I couldn't figure out what was going on in the first half," Holliday said, per MLB.com. "I couldn't get comfortable. I couldn't find the timing I wanted in my swing. You start questioning what you're doing with your swing and stuff like that. I got in a bad place."

The numbers support Holliday's claim. He hit .265 with a .389 slugging percentage, .762 OPS, six home runs and 45 RBI in 93 first-half games before batting .281 with a .515 slugging percentage, .882 OPS, 14 home runs and 45 RBI in 63 games after the All-Star break.

"After the break, I felt like I found it and was able to have a good second half," Holliday said. "I'm proud of that. But I'd like to do without the bad first half and have two good halves. That's where I want to be."

Although he hasn't homered in 11 spring games, Holliday is batting .333 (8 for 24) with two doubles, two RBI and four walks.
