Hector Rondon escapes shaky outing with the save

(6:34 pm ET) Cubs closer Hector Rondon was not at his best but still managed to pick up the save Thursday afternoon at home against the Rockies.

Rondon allowed back-to-back singles to start the ninth, but settled down with a pair of strikeouts to close out a 3-1 victory. He allowed two hits and no walks while striking out two over a scoreless frame. He has converted 14 saves in 17 attempts, with a 3.35 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP over 40 1/3 innings.

Jake Arrieta cruises past Colorado

(6:29 pm ET) Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta bounced back with a gem Thursday afternoon at home against the Rockies, improving to 6-2 on the year. He limited his opposition to only one run on three hits and two walks while striking out seven over seven innings of a 3-1 victory.

Arrieta has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his last six starts. He owns a 2.11 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP over 16 starts (98 innings). He'll get another chance to dominate the Rockies -- this time in Colorado on Wednesday.

Sixth-inning jam proves costly for Pedro Hernandez

(6:23 pm ET) Rockies pitcher Pedro Hernandez made his season debut in a spot start Thursday afternoon against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Hernandez got off to a fast start and tossed five scoreless frames before running into trouble in the sixth. He issued a bases-loaded walk, allowed a sacrifice fly and allowed one more to score on a ground out to shortstop.

Hernandez was charged with three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two over 5 2/3 innings of work, dropping to 0-1 on the year. Of his 94 pitches, 58 were strikes.

Shane Victorino to 'miss little time' due to back issue

(6:12 pm ET) Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino is expected to "miss little time" due to a back injury, general manager Ben Cherington told reporters, per NESN on Thursday.

Victorino was removed from Wednesday's game because of the injury. The GM said that his time off will be used to get Yoenis Cespedes acclimated to right field, Allen Craig to left field. Victorino owns a .268/.303/.382 slash line with two home runs and 12 RBI in 123 at-bats.

Tigers make few roster moves after loss to White Sox

White Sox, the Detroit Free Press reports. They sent reliever Ian Krol down to Triple-A Toledo and activated reliever Patrick McCoy from the disabled list.

Scott Elbert sent outright to Triple-A

(6:02 pm ET) Dodgers pitcher Scott Elbert has been outrighted to Triple-A Albuquerque after clearing waivers, MLB.com reports. Elbert was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list Tuesday and immediately designated him for assignment.

Matt Cain 'checks out fine' with Dr. James Andrews

(6:00 pm ET) Giants pitcher Matt Cain visited with Dr. James Andrews about his ailing right elbow and "checked out fine," according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area on Thursday. Andrews gave the team his recommendation on the loose bodies in Cain's elbow, so a decision on his status should come soon.

Cain has been sidelined since July 9 and could be in danger of missing the remainder of the season.

J.D. Martinez picks up momentum with big game Thursday

(5:59 pm ET) The slump experienced by Tigers surprising outfielder J.D. Martinez is apparently over. He homered, singled, walked and scored twice Thursday in a defeat to the White Sox.

Martinez has rebounded from a 4-for-30 slide to slam five hits and score four runs in the last three games. He still boasts an impressive .325/.363/.605 this season.


Torii Hunter slams 15th homer in Thursday loss

(5:55 pm ET) Tigers veteran outfielder Torii Hunter continued to sizzle Thursday against the White Sox with his third home run in nine games.

Hunter blasted off in the third inning and added a single, walk and hit-by-pitch. He was not retired until the last out of the game. Hunter has six hits with four runs scored in his last three games combined.


Jason Lane outrighted to Triple-A

(5:52 pm ET) The Padres outrighted pitcher Jason Lane to Triple-A El Paso Thursday, two days after he was designated for assignment.

Lane appeared in three games for the Padres, allowing just one run in 10 1/3 innings while going 0-1.
