Jacob deGrom matches MLB strikeout mark

(11:17 pm ET) Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom matched a modern major league record by striking out his first eight batters Monday night at home against Miami. However, it wasn't enough as he failed to factor inot the decision.

DeGrom allowed three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out a career-high 13 over seven innings of a 6-5 defeat. He owns a 2.68 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP over 21 starts (134 1/3 innings). His next start will come Sunday at Atlanta.

Zach Walters suffers intercostal strain

(11:02 pm ET) Indians shortstop Zach Walters left Monday's game against the Astros in sixth inning with a right intercostal strain, the team announced. He went 0 for 2 before leaving the game. He will likely be re-evaluated before Tuesday's game against Houston.

Jarred Cosart unable to factor into decision

(11:00 pm ET) Marlins pitcher Jarred Cosart wasn't a factor into the decision Monday night in New York against the Mets. He allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings of a 6-5 victory.

Cosart has allowed two earned runs or fewer in all but two of his first six starts with the Marlins. He owns a 3.67 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP over 28 starts (169 innings). His next start will come Saturday at home against Washington.

Collin McHugh exits start with forearm contusion

(10:50 pm ET) Astros pitcher Collin McHugh left Monday's start against the Indians because of a forearm contusion, the team announced. He was in the midst of another dominant outing before leaving the game in the seventh inning with the issue.

McHugh allowed one unearned run on five hits and no walks while striking out seven over 6 2/3 innings of work. Of his 90 pitches, 59 were strikes. He owns a 2.66 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP over 24 starts (148 2/3 innings). It remains to be seen if he'll be cleared to make his next start on Sunday against Seattle.

Brandon Belt activated from 7-day DL

(10:43 pm ET) Giants first baseman Brandon Belt was activated from the 7-day disabled list on Monday, according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. Belt has been sidelined since Aug. 6 after taking a ball to the face during warmups. He batted .237 with 11 homers and 24 RBI over 186 at-bats.

Jake Lamb dealing with a quad injury

(9:39 pm ET) Diamondbacks infielder Jake Lamb was held out of the starting lineup Monday night against San Francisco, due to a quad injury, the Arizona Republic reports. He has now missed three consecutive games with the ailment. Lamb is hitting .227 with three homers and 10 RBI over 88 at-bats.

Everth Cabrera could return as early as Sept. 15

(9:33 pm ET) U-T San Diego reports that Padres infielder Everth Cabrera (hamstring)  is getting back "up to speed" with the team's instructional league group in Arizona. He is expected to return at some point during their Sept. 15-24 homestand.

Tommy Milone dealing with neck inflammation

(9:30 pm ET) Twins pitcher Tommy Milone underwent an MRI exam on his neck, which revealed inflammation, MLB.com reports on Monday. Milone was the scheduled starter Monday but has been scratched. He remains hopeful of pitching again this season. He owns a 4.31 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP in 117 innings.

Michael Morse still a couple of days away from returning

(9:25 pm ET) Giants outfielder Michael Morse, who is nursing a strained oblique, is still a day or two away from returning to action, according to the  Bay Area News Group. Morse took batting practice on Monday, but seemed a bit "tentative," per the paper. He has been sidelined since Aug. 31 because of the issue.

Tyson Ross to miss next start due to general soreness

(9:20 pm ET) Padres pitcher Tyson Ross will have his next start pushed back a few days, according to U-T San Diego. Ross experienced general soreness in his previous start on Saturday, which he gave up six runs -- four earned -- on five hits and two walks while striking out four over three innings.
