Steve Johnson to undergo shoulder surgery
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7:02 pm ET) Orioles pitcher Steve Johnson will undergo surgery next Wednesday to remove a large bone spur behind his right shoulder, Comcast SportsNet Baltimore reports.

"It was either wait it out or stretch it out or get surgery and get it removed. It shouldn’t be a long recovery, but I think this is the best way to go," Johnson said.

Johnson has spent the season in the minors, posting a 6.23 ERA in 47 2/3 innings at three different levels, with most of his action coming with Triple-A Norfolk.

Eric Hosmer showing some life again
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6:59 pm ET) Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer went 1 for 3 with a double, a walk and a run scored Monday against the White Sox, which was enough to earn him a mention in my latest blog post chronicling the major happenings in Monday's games.

It doesn't seem like much on its own, but with that performance, he's now batting .321 (9 for 28) with two homers and a 1.049 OPS in his last eight games. Whoop-ti-do.

After the way his season has gone, he'd have to do something Herculean to convince us to draft him as a top 10 first baseman again next year. I'm talking a Ryan Zimmerman-in-2013-type correction so complete that we forget he was having a down year before it, as in a .380 batting average or so and half a dozen home runs. Real craziness.

But as we watch it all unfold, I think it's worth reminding everyone he's only 24. We probably have at least another five years of overreacting to every hot streak, wondering if it's a harbinger of more. And I remain convinced, given his pedigree and those stretches every other year when he appears oh so studly, that one day it will be.

Here's hoping he doesn't have that Herculean finish so we can get him for dirt cheap next year.
