Padres SP Brandon Morrow said he feels good after simulated game
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(10:18 pm ET) Padres pitcher Brandon Morrow threw 45 pitches during a simulated game Thursday and he said the outing went well, reports MLB.com.

"It felt good,'' Morrow said. "It's all been positive."

Morrow tossed three 15-pitch innings during the simulated game and manager Bud Black was pleased with what he saw from Morrow.

"I thought he did well," Black said."I thought his stuff, in a situation like this, was really good. His fastball had some good life to it and his secondary pitches had sharpness, his changeup was good."

Morrow is on the 15-day DL with right shoulder inflammation, but he said the shoulder is feeling good.

"This is the best [my shoulder] has felt all year,'' Morrow said.

If he does not suffer any setbacks over the weekend, Morrow could begin pitching in rehabilitation games next week.

Pirates OF Gregory Polanco trying to gain consistency
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(9:59 pm ET) With Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco hitting just .242 with one home run in 2015, Polanco said he's trying to find consistency in his game in the hopes of producing more at the plate, reports MLB.com.

"That's where my focus is right now," Polanco said. "Just trying to be me and do what I can do and not try to do too much."

Polanco is in his full season in the big leagues and general manager Neal Huntington said Polanco needs to rely more on his natural ability.

"Our [coaches] are working hard to get him back to just trusting his abilities, because he has the ability to play up here," Huntington said.

Polanco has particular trouble with left-handed pitching. He is hitting .173 against southpaws, but he plans to overcome his struggles.

"I know I'm going to be as I've always been. In the Minor Leagues, I hit the good lefties," Polanco said. "I'm going to get it. I just have to keep working at it every day and trust what I'm working on."

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Rua had no problems with Thursday's work. He's targeting a return from the 60-day disabled list in June.

(9:44 pm ET) Pirates pitcher Jameson Taillon sustained a cut on his left heel, which altered his running and pitching schedule, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Taillon was able to continue to throw after suffering the cut. He is trying to recover from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent in April 2014.

Giants SP Jake Peavy (back) not quite ready to return
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(9:26 pm ET) Although Giants pitcher Jake Peavy was able to throw 76 pitches in a rehab start Wednesday, manager Bruce Bochy said Peavy is not ready to return just yet, reports CSNBayArea.com.

"He got his work in," Bochy said. "He'll have at least a couple more outings and we'll see where he's at. He came out of it fine, he's healthy."

Peavy is on the 15-day disabled list with a back injury. He is 0-2 with a 9.39 ERA in two starts this season. He last pitched April 17.

"Results are nice, I'm not going to say that's not something we look at," Bochy said. "It gives us a measuring stick of where he's at, but the more important thing is he comes out of it and he feels good."

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Mariners' Robinson Cano dealing with flu-like symptoms
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(8:50 pm ET) Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano is missing his first start this season on Thursday due to flu-like symptoms, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports.

Manager Lloyd McClendon said that Cano's symptoms popped up overnight after the team returned home from a road trip. He added that the second baseman had lost a couple pounds due to dehydration and was receiving fluids.

Cano, who went 9 for 37 on the road trip, has hit .253/.296/.333 with one home run and 13 RBI in 186 at-bats.

Rangers don't intend to start Delino DeShields at second base
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(8:38 pm ET) Rangers center fielder Delino DeShields played three innings at second base on Sunday, but the Rangers have no intentions to start him at the position in the immediate future, the Dallas Morning News reports.

"We like what Delino has given us at this point," manager Jeff Banister said. "He’s shown aptitude and instincts. He’s shown maturity in his at-bats. We are trying to find ways to keep him engaged and at the top of the lineup, because when he is on base, he scores runs. I don’t think we can put too much on his plate, but I don’t want to pile it so that things are falling off the edges."

A Rule 5 pick this offseason, DeShields has hit .265/.378/.373 with 10 RBI, 21 runs and 11 stolen bases in 83 at-bats.
