Padres recall RP Cory Mazzoni, place him on 60-day DL

(9:17 pm ET) The Padres recalled relief pitcher Cory Mazzoni from Triple-A and placed him on the 60-day disabled list on Friday, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Mazzoni will head to the disabled list because of a shoulder strain.


Brewers, Reds to play doubleheader Saturday after rainout

(8:59 pm ET) The Brewers and Reds will play a doubleheader on Saturday after a rainout Friday.

For the Reds, John Lamb will start in the early game while  Keyvius Sampson will take over during the night game.

Milwaukee will send Matt Garza to the mound for the first game and Wily Peralta for the late game.


Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury leaves Friday's game

Blue Jays SP Marcus Stroman to make final rehab start Monday

(8:16 pm ET) If all goes well, Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman is expected to make his final rehab start Monday, reports MLB.com. Stroman is recovering from knee surgery, which has sidelined him all season.

"Just a lot of hard work, motivation and faith, that's basically all it took," said Stroman, who went 11-6 with a 3.65 ERA in 26 games last year. "Two-a-days six days a week for four months straight will do the job. A lot went into it, a lot of pain, but we're in the position that we sought to be, and it's exciting."


Reds OF Billy Hamilton to begin rehab assignment Saturday

Hamilton took batting practice Friday and reported no issues. He is on the disabled list with a shoulder injury.


Marlins SP Jose Fernandez to throw simulated game

If all goes well, Fernandez could return by mid-September. A biceps strain has kept him out since early August.


Nationals' Michael Taylor undergoes MRI, hopes to return soon

(7:49 pm ET) Nationals outfielder Michael Taylor underwent an MRI on his troublesome knee and everything came back looking good, reports The Washington Post.

"I'm ready," Taylor said. "I'm not playing [Friday]. I'm available off the bench. I think it's the same thing as before. The swelling came back a little bit, little bit of stiffness."


Marlins consider Giancarlo Stanton day to day

(7:43 pm ET) Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is considered day to day in his recovery from a fracture in his wrist, reports Fox Sports. Stanton went 0 for 2 during a rehab game Tuesday, but left after not feeling right.

"It's a just a matter of when the wrist and the soreness goes out of the hand," manager Dan Jennings said. "I think it's a plus that he went down to try the rehab start and test himself to see where he is. Now it's just how much time it will take before he can come back and be as close to 100 percent and the comfort level of his strength with his hand and his wrist."


Mariners' James Paxton has torn fingernail

(7:40 pm ET) Mariners pitcher James Paxton suffered a setback in his recovery from an elbow injury when he suffered a partially torn fingernail during a rehab start, reports 710 ESPN Seattle.

Paxton was removed in the fourth inning of his outing Wednesday at Triple-A. The injury is expected to halt his recovery for a few more days.


Nationals' Aaron Barrett undergoes Tommy John surgery

(7:34 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Aaron Barrett underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Thursday, reports The Washington Post. He will need at least a year to recover.

"Everything was successful," manager Matt Williams said. "He's on the road to recovery now. It's disappointing for him certainly, but he's a warrior and he'll work hard to be back."
