Desmond Jennings sidelined for second straight by knee injury

(2:53 pm ET) Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is out of the lineup for the second straight game against the Red Sox Saturday, as he continues to deal with a sore left knee. At this point, he is still considered day to day moving forward. 

Jeff Locke sent down; should be back shortly

(2:18 pm ET) The Pirates optioned pitcher Jeff Locke to Triple-A Indianapolis Saturday, in order to free up a spot on the active roster.

Locke has been a consistent part of the team's rotation since June, and should continue to be so moving forward. He will almost certainly be brought back to the majors when rosters expand in a few days, though it is not clear if this impacts his scheduled start Tuesday against the Cardinals.


Brent Morel gets the call Saturday

(2:13 pm ET) The Pirates recalled infielder Brent Morel from Triple-A Indianapolis Saturday, the team announced.

Morel spent the minimum 10 days in the minors prior to his recall, and should be able to spend the remainder of the season in the majors with rosters expanding in a few days. He has  hit just .143/.182/.190 in 21 at-bats in the majors this season.

 


Foot injury forced Pedro Alvarez to miss third straight

(12:56 pm ET) Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Reds, as he continues to be sidelined by a sprained left foot.

Alvarez has been out since Tuesday, as the injury has now cost him three games. 


Travis Snider still out Saturday

(12:49 pm ET) Pirates outfielder Travis Snider is still out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Reds, as he continues to deal with a hamstring injury. He has not played since Wednesday, and remains day to day moving forward. 

Anthony Rizzo to sit out Cardinals series

(12:46 pm ET) Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo told reporters he does not expect to play at all in the team's current series against the Cardinals, as he tries to overcome ongoing back issues.

Rizzo has not played since injuring his back Tuesday, and will hope to take a few more days off to help it heal. The Cubs' next series begins Monday against the Brewers, and he will be looking to return to action then.  


Zac Rosscup added as 26th man

(12:41 pm ET) The Cubs recalled reliever Zac Rosscup from Triple-A Iowa Saturday, to serve as the 26th man for Saturday's doubleheader.

Rosscup has appeared in 10 games for the Cubs this season, allowing six runs in 8 1/3 innings. 


Jayson Nix activated, Christian Colon sent to Double-A

(12:38 pm ET) The Royals activated recently acquired infielder Jayson Nix Saturday and optioned Christian Colon to Double-A Nortwest Arkansas.

Colon has been productive since joining the Royals, though playing time hasn't been consistent. He is hitting .302/.348/.442 in 43 at-bats, and should return to the team when rosters expand.  


Justin Upton homers, drives in three in win

(12:27 pm ET) Braves outfielder Justin Upton snapped out of a two-game hitless skid with a big performance in a 5-2 win over the Marlins Friday.

Upton went 2 for 4 in the game, and played a big role in the win. He put the Braves up in the sixth inning with a two-run home run, and then provided key insurance runs in the seventh with an RBI single to finish with three RBI.

Upton ranks third in the National League with 26 home runs and second with 91 RBI, while hitting .288/.362/.524 in 129 games. 


Jorge Soler slugs two more homers in third game

(12:20 pm ET) Cubs outfielder Jorge Soler put together his third multi-hit game in a row to start his career Friday, in a 7-2 win over the Cardinals.

Soler went 3 for 3 with a walk, while clubbing two home runs and driving in three runs total. He has seven hits in his first three major-league games, including three home runs, while driving in six runs.
