Luis Valbuena hits sixth home run Wednesday

(12:44 am ET) Cubs infielder Luis Valbuena hit his sixth home run Wednesday against the Padres.

With two men on, Valbuena worked a two-pitch at-bat against Ian Kennedy in the fourth inning. On the second pitch, Valbuena belted a 76 mph curve out to right for a three-run shot. He finished 1 for 4, with one run scored and three RBI. 


Travis Snider goes yard Wednesday

(12:29 am ET) Pirates outfielder Travis Snider went yard Wednesday against the Dodgers.

Snider struck in the second inning. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Snider belted an 85 mph cutter from Dan Haren out to right. Snider also singled and walked during the game. He finished 2 for 3, with three runs scored and one RBI. 


Brett Gardner clubs 10th home run Wednesday

(12:19 am ET) Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner hit a solo home run Wednesday against the Rangers.

Darvish worked a five-pitch at-bat from Yu Darvish in the third inning. On the final pitch, he hit a 90 mph fastball from Darvish out to right for the solo shot. The game lasted just five innings due to rain, so Gardner finished 1 for 2.


Jose Bautista adds his 18th home run Wednesday

(12:09 am ET) Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista hit his 18th home run Wednesday against the Red Sox.

Bautista waited until the ninth inning to hit his long-ball. He hammered the first pitch he saw from Andrew Miller out to left center for the solo shot. Bautista also hit a run-scoring double in the first inning. He finished 2 for 4, with two runs scored and two RBI. 


Dodgers to skip Dan Haren's next start

(12:07 am ET) The Dodgers will skip Dan Haren at least once through the rotation, ESPNLosAngeles.com reports.

Haren won't pitch again until at least Aug. 2, and he may not have a spot in the rotation by that point if the team brings in a starting pitcher before the trade deadline. He gave up five runs in five innings Wednesday and has lost four straight starts.


David Ortiz clubs three-run homer Wednesday

(12:04 am ET) Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz clubbed a three-run homer Wednesday against the Blue Jays. 

Ortiz struck immediately. In his first at-bat of the game, Ortiz belted a 76 mph knuckleball out to right for a three-run shot. It was his only hit of the game. Ortiz finished 1 for 4, with one run scored and three RBI. 


Tsuyoshi Wada struggles against Padres Wednesday

(7/23/2014) Cubs pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada struggled Wednesday against the Padres.

Wada allowed five runs on five hits over four innings. He struck out four and walked four. The Padres were on to Wada early. Yangervis Solarte drove in the game’s first run on a triple, and Carlos Quentin added a sac fly. 

Wada was able to compose himself for two innings, but allowed another run in the fourth. Things continued to unravel in the fifth. Wada walked the first two hitters of the inning before giving up a run-scoring double. He then issued two more walks, bringing in another run. Wada got himself out of the inning, but was replaced in the sixth.

With the loss, Wada dropped to 0-1 on the year. His next start will come against the Rockies.


Padres need to be overwhelmed to trade Ian Kennedy

(7/23/2014) The Padres have told some teams that they would need to be overwhelmed to trade pitcher Ian Kennedy, CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman reports.

The Padres have already dealt Chase Headley and Huston Street, but they are looking for a substantial return in order to part with Kennedy or Joaquin Benoit. The Yankees are one of the teams reportedly interested in the Kennedy, though the Padres could decide to hang on to the starter. He owns a 3.62 ERA and 137:37 K:BB ratio in 129 1/3 innings.


Ian Kennedy picks up a win Wednesday against the Cubs

(7/23/2014) Padres pitcher Ian Kennedy struggled with his control Wednesday against the Cubs.

Kennedy pitched fairly well despite those issues. He gave up three runs on three hits over six innings. Kennedy struck out six and walked five. He threw 101 pitches during the outing. Kennedy pitched out of trouble a number of times, and only paid for his control problems in the fourth inning. After putting two hitters on via the walk, Kennedy gave up a three-run homer. He would settle down after that and toss two more scoreless innings.

With the win, Kennedy improved to 8-9 on the year. His next start will come against the Braves.


Joe Nathan to remain the closer

(7/23/2014) Tigers reliever Joe Nathan will remain the team's closer, according to MLB.com.

Detroit acquired Joakim Soria Wednesday, muddying up the roles in the bullpen. According to general manager Dave Dombrowski, Nathan will proceed as the club's closer. Nathan has a 5.89 ERA over 36 2/3 innings.
