Nationals place struggling SP Stephen Strasburg on DL
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(2:43 pm ET) The Nationals have announced that they have placed embattled starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg on the 15-day disabled list with neck tightness, which became an issue in his one-inning outing Friday night.

Taylor Hill has been promoted from Triple-A Syracuse to take his roster spot.

Strasburg, who has also been plagued by shoulder pain this season, has scuffled all year on the mound. He has not pitched more than 5 1/3 innings in any of his last six starts and is 3-5 with a terrible 6.55 ERA. He has allowed 64 hits in 45 1/3 innings. He was removed one batter into the second inning Friday at Cincinnati.

The right-hander has not shown typical signs of injury. His fastball remains consistently at 95 mph, which indicates that there is nothing wrong with his arm. But his mechanics and command have been an issue thoughout.

Showalter could not say with certainty that his absence will be just for one game.

Jones had started every game this season. He has just one multi-hit game since May 20, but still boasts a fine stat line of .304/.343/.457.

Orioles CF Adam Jones receives first break of year Saturday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:55 pm ET) Orioles slugger Adam Jones has been given the day off for the game Saturday against visiting Tampa Bay.

The premier center fielder, who had played in all 47 games this season, has been hitting below par recently after an outrageous run to open the year. He has just seven hits in his last 41 at-bats with one home run in May and two since April 14.

Buck Showalter has yet to indicate if the reason for his absence is for anything other than the opportunity to give him a rest.
