Grady Sizemore delivers pinch-hit home run Wednesday

(11:11 pm ET) Phillies outfielder Grady Sizemore smacked a pinch-hit two-run home run in his team's 8-4 win over the Nationals Wednesday.

Sizemore turned a one-run deficit into a one-run lead with his sixth-inning blast, and it was his third straight game with an extra-base hit. He owns a .251/.308/.381 line with four home runs, 24 RBI and six stolen bases in 299 at-bats.


Marlon Byrd homers in three-hit night Wednesday

(11:09 pm ET) Phillies outfielder Marlon Byrd went 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBI in his team's 8-4 win over the Nationals Wednesday.

Byrd slugged his two-run shot in the seventh inning to increase the Phillies' lead to three runs. It was his first home run since Aug. 15. Byrd has also recorded at least one strikeout in 12 straight games. He has hit .271/.317/.468 with 24 home runs and 77 RBI in 506 at-bats.


Scott Van Slyke homers, exits game with rolled ankle

(11:06 pm ET) Dodgers outfielder Scott Van Slyke was removed from Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks after rolling his ankle during a defensive play.

Van Slyke went 1 for 2 and hit a solo home run earlier in the game before suffering his injury. He has hit .267/.377/.517 with 10 home runs and 21 RBI in 172 at-bats.


Jimmy Rollins smacks 17th home run Wednesday

(11:03 pm ET) Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins went 2 for 2 with two walks and a solo home run in his team's 8-4 win over the Nationals Wednesday.

Rollins delivered his home run in the bottom of the first inning after the team fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first. He's recorded four multi-hit performances in his last seven games. Rollins has hit .242/.324/.392 with 17 home runs, 53 RBI and 27 stolen bases in 500 at-bats.


Denard Span homers in three-hit game Wednesday

(10:56 pm ET) Nationals outfielder Denard Span went 3 for 4 with a solo home run and three runs scored in his team's 8-4 loss to the Phillies Wednesday.

Span gave his team a 4-2 lead with his fifth-inning home run, but the Phillies were able to score six unanswered runs in the last four innings to come out on top. Span has hit .300/.351/.407 with two home runs, 28 RBI and 27 stolen bases in 513 at-bats.


Phil Hughes loses it late against Royals

(10:55 pm ET) Twins pitcher Phil Hughes lost it late in the game Wednesday.

Hughes allowed four runs on seven hits over 7 2/3 innings. He struck out four and did not issue any walks. Hughes was exceptional over the first seven innings. He gave up just two hits during those first seven innings. Things fell apart in the eighth. Hughes gave up two singles to start the inning. He was able to induce a pop out for the first out, but couldn’t pull it together. Hughes gave up singles to the next three batters. He was pulled after giving up two runs. Both runners Hughes left on base wound up scoring, and were charged to Hughes.

With the loss, Hughes dropped to 14-9. He’ll take on the Orioles in his next start.


Liam Hendriks turns in strong start Wednesday

(10:54 pm ET) Royals pitcher Liam Hendriks turned in a strong start Wednesday against the Twins.

Hendriks allowed one run on four hits over seven innings. He struck out five and did not issue any walks during the outing. Hendriks was fantastic early, tossing four perfect innings before the Twins could pick up a hit. With two outs in the fifth, Trevor Plouffe managed to knock a double. Hendriks would escape the inning without giving up any runs. He wasn’t so fortunate in the seventh. After getting one out, Hendriks gave up a single and a run-scoring double to the next two hitters.

The Royals mounted a comeback, taking Hendriks off the hook. He didn’t factor into the decision. Hendriks will take on the Rangers in his next start. 


Yadier Molina begins rehab assignment Wednesday

(10:53 pm ET) Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina began a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield Wednesday, going 2 for 3 at the plate and catching six innings.

Molina has been sidelined since undergoing thumb surgery in early July, but he could return to the team this weekend if all goes well with his rehab assignment. Molina has hit .287/.341/.409 with seven home runs and 30 RBI in 303 at-bats.


Kyle Kendrick picks up win vs. Nationals Wednesday

(10:50 pm ET) Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick earned a win Wednesday, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and one walk in six innings and striking out four in his team's 8-4 victory over the Nationals.

Kendrick (7-11) surrendered two runs in the top of the first but his offense was able to even the game in the bottom half of the inning. He gave up two more runs over the next four innings, with one coming on a home run, but the offense came through again, taking the lead in the bottom of the sixth and ultimately giving Kendrick a win. He owns a 4.97 ERA and 99:46 K:BB ratio in 166 2/3 inning. Kendrick is slated to face the Braves Tuesday.


Doug Fister allows four earned runs in loss vs. Phillies

(10:49 pm ET) Nationals pitcher Doug Fister took a loss Wednesday, giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and one walk in 5 2/3 innings and striking out three in his team's 8-4 defeat against the Phillies.

Fister (12-5) gave up two home runs for the second straight outing Wednesday, and his second home run against the Phillies cost him the lead in the sixth inning. He hit the next batter after losing the lead and was removed with two outs. Fister owns a 2.55 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 80:16 K:BB ratio in 130 1/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Dodgers Tuesday.
