Royals agree with OF Rios on option for 2016

(3:27 pm ET) The Royals could have newly acquired outfielder Alex Rios sticking around for a second season. He has officially signed a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2016.

Rios lost his power in 2014. He hit just four home runs, but still finished with a respectable slash line of .280/.311/.398 and ripped 30 doubles.


Cubs sign C Ryan Lavarnway, DFA two others

(3:23 pm ET) The Cubs have claimed former Boston catcher Ryan Lavarnway off waivers. They have also desginated for assignment right-hander Donn Roach and infielder Logan Watkins.

Lavarnway was hitless in 10 at-bats for the Red Sox in 2014 after missing extended time with a broken wrist.


Report: Athletics to release Nick Punto

(3:19 pm ET) The Athletics will release infielder Nick Punto, according to  Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday. Punto hit .207/.296/.293 with two home runs, 14 RBI and three stolen bases in 198 at-bats while spending most of his playing time at second base and shortstop in 2014.

Phillies shortstop Freddy Galvis finally set to start

(3:16 pm ET) Shortstop Freddy Galvis has been waiting for several years for a full-time opportunity from the Phillies and now he's got it. But general manager Ruben Amaro did not exactly give him a ringing endorsement Friday.

"Whether he's earned it or not, we don't know," Amaro told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

He has not earned it at the plate. Galvis owns a .218 lifetime batting average and hit a mere .176 with a meager .227 on-base percentage last season.


Blue Jays claim LHP Juan Oramas off waivers

(3:12 pm ET) The Blue Jays have claimed left-handed pitcher Juan Oramas off waivers from the Padres on Friday, per the team's official website. Oramas posted a 5.61 ERA primarily as a starter last season at Triple-A.

Angels, Royals trade bit players

(3:11 pm ET) The Angels and Royals have completed a minor swap in which the latter acquired right-hander Brian Broderick for veteran infielder Johnny Giavotella.

Giavotella, who was designated for assignment Thursday, has earned just 78 at-bats in the last two seasons combined. The 28-year-old Broderick pitched in 11 games for Washington in 2011, but has otherwise not hurled in a major league game.


Yankees acquire Gonzalez Germen from Mets; DFA Preston Claiborne

(3:03 pm ET) The Yankees acquired right-handed pitcher Gonzalez Germen from the Mets in exchange for an undisclosed amount of cash, per the team's official website. To make room on 40-man roster, the Yankees designated right-handed pitcher Preston Claiborne for assignment.

Marlins, Yankees formally announce five-player trade

(2:59 pm ET) The Marlins and Yankees formally announced a five player trade on Friday, per MLB.com. The Marlins acquired infielder Martin Prado and pitcher David Phelps from New York in exchange for Nathan Eovaldi, Garrett Jones and Domingo German. Miami also received an undisclosed amount of cash in the deal.

Prado hit .282 with 12 homers and 58 RBI in 143 games played between the Yankees and Diamondbacks. Phelps went 5-5 with a 4.38 ERA and 92 strikeouts over 113 innings pitched. 

Eovaldi registered a 4.37 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP and 142:43 K:BB ratio over 199 2/3 innings as a starter in Miami. Jones hit .246 with 15 homers and 53 RBI over 496 at-bats in his lone season with the Marlins.


Pirates sign 1B Corey Hart to one-year contract

(2:14 pm ET) The Pirates announced they signed veteran first baseman Corey Hart to a one-year deal on Friday, per the team's official website. Hart is expected to make $2.5 million from Pittsburgh, plus $2.5 million in incentives, reports CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Hart will likely be the right-handed platoon option with Pedro Alvarez at first base. Hart has 160 homers in his 10-year career in the majors. Last season, he appeared in only 68 games due to injury, batting .203 with six home runs, nine doubles and 21 RBI.

Marlins acquire Martin Prado in trade with Yankees

(1:45 pm ET) CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman has confirmed the Yankees have traded third baseman Martin Prado and pitcher David Phelps to the Marlins in exchange for pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, first baseman Garrett Jones and Domingo German. The Marlins will also receive an undisclosed amount of cash in the deal.
