Angels outfielder and reigning AL MVP Mike Trout arrived for spring training Wednesday with two goals on tap for 2015 -- cut down his strikeouts and increase his stolen-base total.

While Trout won the AL MVP in 2014, batting .287 with 36 home runs, 111 RBI and 115 runs, he led the league in strikeouts with 184 and had just 16 stolen bases.

“Plain and simple, I was chasing the high pitch, everybody knows that,” Trout said, per the Los Angeles Times. “There are things you can work on. The majority of time, they’re balls, and I was chasing them.

“I don’t like over-analyzing my swing. I do stuff in the cage and in batting practice that will help me in the game, but I’ll keep my same routine. It’s been working for me. I don’t want to switch anything up. I want to put the ball in play, let my legs get a few more hits and try to get on base more.”

Trout added he plans to talk with manager Mike Scioscia this spring about being more aggressive on the base paths.

“I definitely want to steal more bases,” Trout said. “Want to get to second base as much as I can. I have to take more chances. They were doing a pretty good job of holding me on. The pitchers were really quick to the plate. It’s going to be a challenge, but I’ll do my best.”

News
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez confirmed to reporters following Thursday's full-squad workout that the second baseman position is a "wide open" competition, and that Jose Peraza, Alberto Callaspo, Phil Gosselin and Jace Peterson are all entering camp with a chance to make the club, per MLB.com.

"It's wide open," Gonzalez said. "It's all depending on how we want to work second base, the infield and even the bench."

News
Cardinals pitcher Jordan Walden is working to alter his delivery this spring, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Walden has always displayed unorthodox mechanics. During his windup, he "jumps" off the ground. While this has been successful for Walden in the past, he has some concerns about the move. "I work on it every year to get rid of it and it does hurt me sometimes, too," Walden said. "I’m a big boy and jumping on my hip takes a toll on your body. It’s kind of hard to change it, but I’m trying to modify it so that I can play longer."

During camp, he's worked to try and tone down his jump. "I'm just trying to be softer on my front side," Walden said.

Manager Mike Matheny said the team won't ask Walden to alter anything about his delivery. "I don't want him hurting himself if you start making radical changes," Matheny said. "I don’t see us doing much tinkering until he needs it or wants it."

The 27-year-old posted a 2.88 ERA over 50 innings last year.

News
Twins pitcher Ervin Santana is working with a four-pitch mix now, according to MLB.com.

Santana has actually been using four pitches for a few seasons now, but said he feels more confident in his repertoire these days. "Now I have more confidence and more command of my changeup and my two-seam," he said. "I started doing that in Anaheim, but everyone just says I'm fastball-slider. So I'm like, 'All right. It's just fastball-slider. This is good.'" Santana said his ability to throw his changeup and two-seamer has caught some hitters off guard.

Santana was able to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday, and said he was happy with the results. "Everything was coming pretty good. I was able to keep the ball down for the most part. I threw a couple sliders and a couple of changeups that were very good. So I was happy."

The 32-year-old posted a 3.95 ERA over 196 innings last year.

Knee - Out until at least early April (Updated - 2/24/15)
News
Angels starting pitcher Garrett Richards took a big step forward in his recovery from August knee surgery during his fourth bullpen session on Thursday, according to MLB.com.

"Looked good, man," pitching coach Mike Butcher said. "Real good. Stable, repeated well."

Richards, who logged 50 pitches in his latest session, mixed in offspeed pitches from the stretch and windup. He is scheduled to throw again on Sunday.

News
Indians left-handed reliever Scott Downs, who will turn 39 on March 17, is in camp on his first minor-league contract of his 13-year career. He told MLB.com on Wednesday he has lit a youthful fire in him to win a bullpen role in spring training. His fate may depend on whether manager Terry Francona wants to keep three lefties in the pen.

"You don't know what's going to happen yet," Downs said. "It's so early in camp. I've told [Francona] that I feel good and I still feel like I've got something to bring to the table, both on and off the field. I think he feels the same way. A lot of those things, you have to see what works out and how things go from here."

Rockies starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood, who had Tommy John surgery in July, is aiming to pitch during the 2015 season, per The Denver Post. The expected return from Tommy John surgery is usually 12-18 months.

"I don't know for sure, but I would expect to pitch sometime this year," he said. "It's kind of up to the (Rockies) as far as how fast I progress."

Royals DH Kendrys Morales arrived to spring training Tuesday and is eager to begin work on his timing at the plate, per MLB.com.

Morales missed spring training last year and didn't sign with Minnesota until June. Missing camp played a big part in Morales batting just .218 with eight home runs last season.

"I think it's logical that when I get my at-bats this spring it will help," Morales said through an interpreter. "I think more than anything, I tried [last year]. But missing spring training and part of the season hurt. I gave it my best.

"I just think I can get back to the player I used to be. Hopefully, I get those results on the field."

News
Blue Jays infielder Maicer Izturis said Wednesday that he's back to full health after being limited to just 11 games in 2014 due to knee surgery, MLB.com reports.

"I'm feeling very good," Izturis said Wednesday. "Just trying to do my thing and do much better. ... I've been taking ground balls, hitting. When everybody gets here, we'll see how I turn double plays, run the bases, that kind of stuff."

If Izturis can prove his knee is no longer a concern, he could be the favorite to emerge from a crowded competition for the team's starting role at second base.

"I'm used to a lot of competition from when I was in Anaheim, and this is kind of similar," Izturis said. "Every year I had to compete, had to get a job, and to me there's no pressure, just try to do my best, try to help my team, and that's the goal."

Manager John Gibbons indicated Wednesday that he likes what he's seen of the infielder during the very early stages of camp.

"He looks good, he looks the best I've seen him in three years, physically," Gibbons said. "He's moving better, and you never know coming off an injury like that what's going to happen."

Prior to his lost season, Izturis hit .236/.288/.310 with five home runs and 32 RBI in 365 at-bats in 2013, his first season in Toronto.
