News
Phillies starter Jerome Williams struggled through five innings in the loss to the Rockies on Thursday. Williams allowed five runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out none. He threw 75 pitches, with 53 going for strikes.

He got touched up for a three-run third inning thanks to a couple of run-scoring singles from Troy Tulowitzki and Brandon Barnes. He then served up a two-run home run to catcher Mike McKenry in the fifth inning.

"I don't know," Williams said about his struggles, per MLB.com. "I think I was making some quality pitches. Kind of just trying to find the strike zone. If I was behind in the count, I'm trying to do my job, you know? Trying to get back in the count. I think I had three walks today. That's unacceptable."

This marks the fifth consecutive start in which Williams (3-4) was unable to pitch more than five innings. He holds a 5.44 ERA as he heads into his next start, scheduled for Tuesday in New York against the Mets.

Marlins pitcher Dan Haren allowed two runs on five hits in eight innings of work in Miami's 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks on Monday in 13 innings, but did not factor into the decision.

Haren only blemish came in the fourth inning when with two men on, Yasmany Tomas blasted an RBI double to deep center field, scoring both runners. Haren settled in after that, totaling five strikeouts and no walks in his outing.

Haren, who remains 4-2, moved his ERA to 3.47 in 49 1/3 innings of work. He will look to get back on the winning side on Saturday against the Orioles.

News
Angels manager Mike Scioscia is hoping that shortstop Erick Aybar will add a spark to the offense from the leadoff spot, per the Los Angeles Times.

Aybar spent seven games at the top of the order earlier in the season before taking over the top spot for the foreseeable future on Monday. He is hitting .286 (4 for 14) in his first three games back as the leadoff man, and .387 (24 for 62) with four RBI and a .406 on-base percentage over his last 16 games played.

"I don't think you ever ask a player to do something he's either not comfortable with or not suited for," Scioscia said. "With Erick, although he's not going to see as many pitches as a traditional leadoff guy, he's athletic, he's going to get in scoring position a lot.

"His on-base is not going to be off the charts, but it's not going to be awful, either. He's going to get on base enough, get in scoring position enough to where he can still be effective as a table-setter."

Twins pitcher Ervin Santana reported to extended spring training last week in Fort Myers, Fla., according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Santana, who is currently serving an 80-game suspension for testing positive for steroids, is eligible for return on July 4 and is using the time to get his body in shape. Santana has throw a couple of bullpen sessions and is expected to throw live batting practice next week, according to MLB.com.He will throw extended spring training before heading to Triple-A Rochester for preparation.

Chip Hale has explained the move of Diamondbacks slugger Mark Trumbo to the second spot in the lineup as an attempt to give him better pitches to hit with slugger Paul Goldschmidt looming on deck, per MLB Network Radio.

The strategy has had mixed results. His average has remained virtually the same since the move was made on May 6, but he has four of his six home runs on the year since then to raise his slugging percentage from .476 to .520.
