The Diamondbacks signed Gerald Laird to a five-day contract extension, which keeps him in camp with the team through Sunday.

Laird is in camp as a non-roster player, and his original contract had an out that he could exercise on Tuesday if he wasn't going to make the team's roster.

Laird is competing against Blake Lalli and Jordan Pacheco for the D-Backs' backup catcher spot.

News
Diamondbacks pitcher Chase Anderson allowed six earned runs on 11 hits and one walk in four innings while striking out in his final Cactus League start in Tuesday's 8-7 win over the Rangers.

Anderson had put together a nice spring coming into Tuesday's start but fell flat, watching his Cactus League ERA jump from 1.84 to 4.34. He has posted an 11:5 K:BB ratio in 18 2/3 innings this spring. Anderson was recently named to the starting rotation, and his schedule lines him up to make his regular-season debut April 10 against the Dodgers.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale has named his Opening Day starter, Josh Collmenter, but has yet to unveil the rest of his starting rotation. Because Collmenter and another starter, Jeremy Hellickson, have similar styles, Hale is considering Rubby De La Rosa as the No. 2 when the season begins, reports MLB.com.

"We are in serious discussion about doing something like that," Hale said.

De La Rosa has a 3.75 ERA in four appearances this spring. He's recorded 11 strikeouts with five earned runs allowed in 12 innings pitched.

News
Diamondbacks pitcher Addison Reed was charged with an unearned run in his spring debut Friday but earned the save after walking a batter and allowing no hits.

Reed said last week he wanted to pitch in four or five outings to get ready for the start of the regular season, so it's possible he'll be back on the mound Sunday after receiving the day off Saturday. He is working his way to full health after dealing with a shoulder injury this spring.

News
Diamondbacks pitcher Jeremy Hellickson tossed 75 pitches Saturday after getting an extra few days of rest for arm fatigue. He feels his arm is ready to go for the start of the season, reports MLB.com.

"I thought his stuff was good," manager Chip Hale said. "Used his offspeed stuff and looked like he confused some hitters, so that's what we're looking for."

Hellickson allowed eight runs in 4 1/3 innings pitched Saturday.

"I'd like to not give up as many hits as I've given up two of the four starts anyway," said Hellickson. "The good thing is I don't think too many of them were hard hit. Curveball still has a ways to go, but I think the fastball and fastball command is pretty much where I want it. The changeup wasn't bad today. It was a little better last time, but for the most part it was down today which is all I can ask for."

The Diamondbacks announced that Chase Anderson, Trevor Cahill, Josh Collmenter, Rubby De La Rosa and Jeremy Hellickson will fill out the five-man rotation to start the season

With Cahill and Anderson making the rotation, Daniel Hudson will move to the bullpen. According to MLB.com, a final decision on the order of the rotation has yet to be determined.

However, Collmenter is expected to start on Opening Day and De La Rosa is the most likely candidate to pitch the second game. Hellickson is slated to start the third, leaving the coaching staff a decision to make on which games Anderson and Cahill will start.

Diamondbacks pitcher Daniel Hudson tossed 3 2/3 innings Sunday, allowing no runs on three hits with four strikeouts against the Rockies. It was Hudson's longest outing of spring training.

"For a couple of hitters there, I'd lose the release point and fly open a little bit and fall behind," Hudson said to MLB.com. "My two-strike pitches were better today, but I wasn't getting ahead as much as I wanted. It'll come.

"I was pretty disappointed about the way I threw to hitters in the first part of the game. It's the first time I've gone [into] four innings in 2 1/2 years. It kind of comes with it."
