News
Veteran Cliff Pennington has no set position, but Kirk Gibson has found a way to get him into the lineup virtually every day for the Diamondbacks. He has started at second, third and shortstop in the last six games.

Pennington has earned the playing time. He has at least one hit in each of those starts and is 10 for 25 during that stretch with eight runs scored and six walks. His .369 on-base percentage is at its highest point since May 5.

News
Diamondbacks starting pitcher Josh Collmenter suffered a second straight loss Sunday at Miami, but his struggles have actually spanned the last month. The right-hander is 0-2 with an 8.50 ERA in his last four starts.

Collmenter told reporters and the coaching staff he is OK, but his recent struggles haven't gone unnoticed.

"We're going to have to re-evaluate if it's something going forward that we need to be concerned about," pitching coach Mike Harkey said, per The Arizona Republic. "We'll figure it out. He says he feels good. We don't want to hurt anybody. But if he says he feels good, you're usually not going to make a determination on one start. We'll have to look at a few of them and see what happens."

Collmenter didn't dispute the fact that fatigue might be settling in after throwing just 92 innings in relief last season.

"I haven't thrown this many innings in over a year, so it could be," Collmenter said. "But I try to do everything to be ready to throw a lot of innings, whether it's out of the 'pen or as a starter. It could have something to do with it. I'm not so sure."

Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius picked up his fifth home run Monday against the Nationals.

With his team down a run, Gregorius stepped to the plate with a man on in the eighth inning. He worked an eight-pitch at-bat, homering on a 95 mph fastball. Gregorius singled earlier in the game. He finished 2 for 5, with one run scored and two RBI.

News
Call it a hunch.

Mark Trumbo has always been a streaky player. He hit .314 (11 for 35) with five home runs in his first nine games with the Diamondbacks only to hit .130 (6 for 46) with two in his next 12 before going on the DL with a stress fracture in his left foot. That's just one example, of course. The most extreme came in 2012, when he hit .306 with 22 home runs in the first half only to hit .227 with 10 in the second half.

We can agree on that, right? Streaky.

So while some may view his power outage since coming off the DL -- he has only one home run in 108 at-bats -- as cause for alarm, I view it as Trumbo being Trumbo. And I take solace in this: In his last 16 games, he's batting .351 (20 for 57).

Trumbo has never been a singles hitter. When he's hot, he mashes by anyone's standards. So then, he hasn't really gotten hot yet. But he's clearly seeing the ball well; he's clearly putting a good swing on it. We're just catching the first glimpse of what's to come.

Keep the faith, Trumbo owners.

News
Diamondbacks pitcher Vidal Nuno couldn’t pick up a win despite a strong start Monday.

Nuno allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked one during the outing. Nuno was excellent to open the game, tossing six scoreless frames. He ran into trouble in the seventh. After giving up a walk, Nuno allowed a two-run homer to Wilson Ramos. The Diamondbacks managed to battle back, giving Nuno a no-decision.

Nuno will take on the Padres Monday.

Diamondbacks pitcher Wade Miley suffered a loss Saturday, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk in seven innings and striking out nine in his team's 2-1 defeat against the Marlins.

Miley (7-9) gave up a game-tying triple in the fourth inning and watched the second run come home on an error in the seventh. He pitched very well despite the result. Miley owns a 4.46 ERA and 153:52 K:BB ratio in 163 1/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Nationals Thursday.
