News
Diamondbacks pitcher Jeremy Hellickson had to cut a bullpen session short on Saturday due to a cramp near his ribs, according to MLB.com.

Hellickson doesn't expect to miss any time due to the issue. "I feel fine. It's more of a cramp than anything. It was a precautionary thing to shut it down," Hellickson said. "It doesn't even hurt right now.

The team will evaluate Hellickson on Sunday, and that will determine whether he takes any days off. Manager Chip Hale said the team's trainers do not expect Hellickson to miss any time as of right now.

The 27-year-old posted a 4.52 ERA over 63 2/3 innings last year.

News
While the Diamondbacks are trying to see if Yasmany Tomas can develop into a starting third baseman at the major-league level, Jake Lamb is doing his best this spring to make sure the Diamondbacks don't forget about him, per MLB.com.

"He just looks great," Diamondbacks chief baseball officer Tony La Russa said. "I didn't see him last spring so I don't have anything to compare it to. I saw him at the end of the season, he could have been worn down. His talent is oozing. Believe me, at the point we're a contending club there is room for both of those guys [Tomas and Lamb] on the team. It's not that tough to figure out. They can't both play third base, but you could be creative. Get the best players on the field."

Shoulder - Out until at least mid-March (Updated - 2/24/15)
News
Diamondbacks shortstop Chris Owings is progressing well from offseason shoulder surgery, reports The Arizona Republic.

Owings was expected to miss the first week to 10 games of spring training, but manager Chip Hale said he's ahead of schedule.

"I don't have an exact [return] date," Hale said. "But he's past where I thought he was."

News
Diamondbacks pitcher Randall Delgado is facing a roster crunch, according to azcentral.com.

Delgado had some success after adding a slider last season, but faces a lot of competition this spring. While the competition for the fifth starter spot contains a lot of players, Delgado's experience in the bullpen last year could help him make the club. On top of that, he's out of options, giving him a better chance of breaking camp on the 25-man roster.

Bullpen coach Mel Stottlemyre said he believes Delgado could get the job done. "He can be a valuable piece in that bullpen, knowing that there might be some guys that are going to get protected," Stottlemyre said. "The fact that he can pitch in some different roles — he can give you some length, he can come in and strike a guy out. I saw this guy go through the middle of lineups on some good ballclubs and make the hitters look bad. It's there."

The 25-year-old Delgado posted a 4.87 ERA over 77 2/3 innings last season.

News
The Diamondbacks have let it be known that the team is open to trading pitcher Trevor Cahill, outfielder Cody Ross and second baseman Aaron Hill, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports.

Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart indicated Monday that he has not spoken to teams about any of the three players.

Hill is expected to open the season as the team's starting second baseman, while Ross is likely to compete for at-bats in left field. Cahill is not a lock to open the season in the team's rotation even if he remains on the Diamondbacks.

News
Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart decided after last season that Mark Trumbo would be better in right field than left, where he started the 2014 season, MLB.com reports.

"From what I understood from talking to [Trumbo's former manager] Mike Scioscia, he's a much better right fielder than he is in left," Stewart said.

Trumbo indicated that he feels more comfortable in right field.

"Just reads off the bat, what I feel more comfortable with," Trumbo said. "Being right-handed I've just found right field, especially with some of those balls coming in, it's much easier for me with that angle as opposed to the one in left."

Trumbo has seen most of his defensive work in his five-year career at first base but has made 65 appearances in right field. He hit .235/.293/.415 with 14 home runs and 61 RBI in 328 at-bats last season.

News
Diamondbacks infielder Yasmany Tomas will play third and in the outfield this spring, according to MLB.com.

Tomas has mainly been used as a third baseman early in camp, but has started to shag balls in the outfield during batting practice. The club plans to use Tomas in the outfield once spring games begin. The idea behind the move is to give the Cuban infielder as many at-bats as possible. "We've told Tomas that if there's a day when he is not going to play third, we're going to put him in the outfield just to get at-bats," manager Chip Hale said.

Tomas was mainly used as an outfielder while in Cuba, but Arizona is attempting to transition him to third. He's looked raw in fielding drills during camp, but both Tomas and Hale remain cautiously optimistic about the move. "It feels like it's been a long time since I played third base, but I like the position and I feel good about it," Tomas said.

The 24-year-old is expected to earn a starting spot with the club to open the season.

News
Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill has left a strong impression on chief baseball officer Tony La Russa through the early days of spring training, per MLB.com.

"He definitely is in the competition for playing time," La Russa said. "That's just front office talking, remember that, because [manager] Chip [Hale] makes out the lineup. I'm just echoing what Chip has seen. I'm sure he would say the same thing to you."
