News
Because of he reported to camp in exceptional condition and Alberto Callaspo did not, Jace Peterson may have an outside shot at the Braves' second base job, per the Atlanta Journal Constitution on Wednesday.

Callaspo signed with the Braves as a free agent in December was penciled in as the starter while top prospect Jose Peraza works his way through the minors. However, if Callaspo doesn't play his way into game shape over the next month, Peterson, along with Phil Gosselin could have a crack at the position.

Peterson was traded to the Braves from the Padres in a deal that involved Justin Upton in late December. Last week, manager Fredi Gonzalez confirmed to reporters that the second base gig is "wide open."

News
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Tuesday that second-base prospect Jose Peraza could see time at shortstop this spring, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Gonzalez plans to play all the team's young middle infielders at both second base and shortstop this spring, aside from starting shortstop Andrelton Simmons. Peraza is in competition to start at second base, but an ability to handle the shortstop position could presumably increase his chances of sticking on the big-league roster even if he doesn't win a starting role.

News
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Thursday third baseman Chris Johnson would move over to first base during the regular season on the days he wants to rest first baseman Freddie Freeman, particularly against a tough left-handed pitcher.

“Chris Johnson will be that guy, and you’re going to see him play some first base in spring training,” Gonzalez said, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He took some ground balls there the last couple of years, and ended up moving over there in that one game (last season) where Freddie got thrown out. I’m not going to carry a guy (just to) be a backup (to Freeman).

“CJ can do it. And depending on the makeup of the club, Kelly Johnson is a guy who can do it, too. But he’s (another left-handed) hitter, so if you want to give Freeman a day off against a tough left-hander you don’t want to run Kelly Johnson in there. You could run CJ in there and utilize him that way.”

News
Braves left-handed pitcher Luis Avilan is competing for a spot in the bullpen this spring after enduring a down season last year, and he's confident he's getting back to the form he showed in 2013, MLB.com reports.

"I feel like all the work I've done in the offseason is really paying off," Avilan said. "I feel really good with my bullpen [sessions] and my live BP. I've been feeling really good with my pitches. The location has been really good, better than last year."

Avilan made 10 appearances in winter ball after posting a 4.57 ERA and 25:21 K:BB ratio in 43 1/3 innings in 2014.

News
Braves starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez, who is competing for the fifth spot in the rotation, allowed one run on two hits and two walks in one inning of work during his spring debut Wednesday against the Mets. He struck out one.

Rodriguez got off to a rocky start Wednesday as he walked Juan Lagares to start the game. Lagares would score four batters later on a two-out single by Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

The veteran left-handed hurler threw 17 of 30 pitches for strikes.

“All my pitches today had bad location,” Rodriguez said, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “One of those days. Bad location.”

News
Braves pitcher Eric Stults logged two scoreless innings during Thursday's 6-4 Grapefruit League win over the Tigers.

Stults gave up two hits but also got two Tigers players to hit into double plays.

“The first time out in spring you don’t know what to expect,” Stults said, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “so my mindset is, I want to stay down in the zone and make them put the ball on the ground. For the most part, I was able to do that. Guys made some plays behind me to turn two, so that was nice.”

Stults, 35, is competing with Wandy Rodriguez for the fifth spot in the Braves' pitching rotation. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez was pleased with what he saw in Stults Thursday.

“You can never have too much pitching, like we know from the past," Gonzalez said. "And all of a sudden we get bad news, or possibility of bad news with Mikey, and you feel good that you have some depth in the rotation.”

Although he has already resumed baseball activities, the Braves aren't going to push shortstop Andrelton Simmons (oblique) back into game action quickly. Simmons told MLB.com on Tuesday that he's "taking it slow" with swinging a bat. He's not expected to play in spring games until next week.

News
Braves pitcher Julio Teheran still remembers the 2012 spring training game when he gave up six home runs in two innings against the Tigers.

Therefore, scheduled to pitch against the Tigers on Thursday, he refused to use the same bullpen at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla. that he did during that disastrous outing.

"I don't really think about that," Teheran said, per MLB.com. "I know some guys make fun of that, and I do too. It's just something that happened before."

On Thursday, Teheran fared much better in a 6-4 Braves victory.

Teheran gave up one run during his first spring start of the season. He threw 36 pitches with 25 going for strikes.

"I was controlling all of my pitches," Teheran said. "That was my goal today. I think the ball was coming out pretty good from my hands. I think that is where I want to be."

Braves outfielder Eric Young is making his case to be a starter for the team this spring. Youn went 0-for-1 Wednesday with two walks and two stolen bases.

"I'm pleased with the first day," Young said. "I'll just continue to get the work out there."

President of baseball operations John Hart thinks he has the speed to take the job.

"He's got the one ingredient that you want in center field in that he can fly," Hart said. "He's a [plus] runner. We've got time to get ready for him. He's eager to play center field. Somebody will be playing center field. EY got off to a good start. He has the make, and what he brings is a little different dynamic."
