Neck - Questionable for start of season (Updated - 2/25/15)
News
Braves outfielder Nick Markakis apologized for calling out the Orioles organization, according to MASN.

Markakis was recently quoted saying the Orioles organization couldn't be trusted after he felt they were disingenuous about why contract negotiations broke down. "Don't believe a word they say," Markakis said. "It was all because of my neck. They can say what they want to make them look good."

He backpedaled from those comments on Thursday. "What I said wasn't directed at any way to the Orioles organization or ownership. It's just one of those things where I kind of said sarcastically, 'B.S., I wouldn't believe everything you hear. Don't believe them.'" he said. "I just want to put it behind me and I apologize for what I did, but there's a reason why it came out of my mouth."

The 31-year-old hit .276/.342/.386 over 642 at-bats last year.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez confirmed to reporters following Thursday's full-squad workout that the second baseman position is a "wide open" competition, and that Jose Peraza, Alberto Callaspo, Phil Gosselin and Jace Peterson are all entering camp with a chance to make the club, per MLB.com.

"It's wide open," Gonzalez said. "It's all depending on how we want to work second base, the infield and even the bench."

Toe - Expected to be placed on 15-day DL. Out until at least early May (Updated - 2/27/15)
News
The Braves announced Friday outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. could miss at least two months after tests revealed inflammation in his left foot. Upton will be in a short leg cast fot two weeks, then a walking boot for 4-6 weeks.

Upton missed Friday's workout after he was seen limping following batting practice Thursday, per MLB.com. He went through a round of treatment Friday before being sent for an MRI.

The Braves initially declined to speculate on the severity of the injury until Upton went for further testing.

"[The discomfort] is more in the toe area, but we're calling it a foot [injury]," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Friday morning.

Upton was listed as the starting center fielder on the depth chart on the team's official website. The backups were listed as Todd Cunningham and Eury Perez.

Upton is entering the third year of a five-year, $72.25 million contract. However, his first two years with the Braves have been largely disappointing. He has a .198/.279/.314/.593 slash line in two seasons in Atlanta.

News
Braves pitcher Wandy Rodriguez impressed during a recent bullpen session on Tuesday, according to MLB.com.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez watched Rodriguez throw a bit, and was happy with what he saw. "He's healthy. His arm's working really, really good. He's not laboring. He's spinning the breaking ball pretty good," Gonzalez said.

The 36-year-old was limited to just 26 2/3 innings last year, but upped his value by pitching well during winter ball.

Rodriguez is expected to compete for the fifth spot in the team's rotation this spring. He owns a career 4.06 ERA over 1,471 innings.

News
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Tuesday that Manny Banuelos could be a candidate for a long-relief position in the bullpen to start the season, if he is unable to break camp as the No. 5 starter, per the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Banuelos, a former top-100 prospect, went 2-3 with a 4.11 ERA over 26 minor-league appearances (25 starts) in 2014. He pitched at Class A, Double-A and Triple-A. He missed the 2013 season due to Tommy John surgery.

Oblique - Out until at least early March (Updated - 2/26/15)
News
A day after the team announced that Andrelton Simmons will not be throwing for a few days due to a sore oblique, Braves shortstop took the field Friday for some light throwing and some dry swings, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Simmons suffered the injury while working out last week. It's not considered to be a threat to his opening-day status.

"We didn't want him to throw across the (infield Friday)," manager Fredi Gonzalez said, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "He was cleared to do that, but it was cold and our coaches, Terry (Pendleton) and Carlos (Tosca), took the initiative and said it's cold, it's windy. He did play catch, he warmed up, but we didn't want him to throw across the diamond yet."

News
When news spread Thursday that Braves closer Craig Kimbrel was throwing changeups during batting practice, it generated some buzz before manager Fredi Gonzalez indicated it probably wouldn't be a pitch that makes it into Kimbrel's in-season repertoire.

It seems Kimbrel indicated as much Friday, saying throwing the changeup in spring training offers him a way to improve his mechanics and avoid putting too much early strain on his arm with an overabundance of curveballs.

"It does help me with extension and getting through my pitches," Kimbrel said, per MLB.com. "That's really the main reason I throw it. Plus, I don't want to go out there and flip off breaking balls over and over again until my arm is ready to do it. So why not throw a changeup?"
