News
Braves right-hander Shelby Miller continued to fly under the radar as one of the hottest pitchers in baseball Saturday night.

Miller managed his fourth straight strong start and third consecutive victory by going his typical six innings and giving up two runs on three hits in Philadelphia. He walked two and struck out three.

All was not peachy in the fourth inning when Miller yielded a two-run homer to Ryan Howard that broke a scoreless tie. But his teammates scored three in the seventh to give him the win.

Miller, whose ERA rose to 2.03, will try for his fourth win in a row Thursday against Cincinnati.

News
Braves infielder Alberto Callaspo hit a solo home run in a pinch-hit appearance Sunday in his team's 5-4 loss to the Phillies.

On the same day that manager Fredi Gonzalez indicated that Jace Peterson would serve as the team's primary second baseman, Callaspo, who has also seen plenty of time at third base, swatted a pinch-hit home run off Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon. It was the first homer of the year for Callaspo, who has hit .261/.314/.348 with four RBI in 46 at-bats.

Braves starting pitcher Alex Wood did not allow a run in 5 2/3 innings on Friday for a no decision against the Phillies.

Wood yielded five hits and a walk in the outing.

"Woody was good," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "He mixed his pitches well. His secondary pitch, he threw for strikes. Really, everybody gave us a good opportunity out of that bullpen to get that win."

Wood's next start is set for Wednesday against the Nationals.

Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman was ejected in Monday night's game against the Nationals.

As seen by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's David O'Brien, Freeman flipped his helmet and said something to umpire Bill Welke after striking out. He wasn't immediately tossed from the game but earned an ejection soon after.

Chris Johnson replaced Freeman at first base in the sixth inning.

Freeman finished 2 for 3 and now has a slash line of .254/.321/.493.

News
Braves pitcher Eric Stults allowed two earned runs during Monday night's 8-4 victory against the Nationals.

Stults went 6 1/3 innings and gave up only four hits. He struck out three batters and walked three while throwing 59 of his 96 pitches for strikes.

"For me, it's just going out and throwing strikes and trying to keep guys off balance," Stults said after the game, per MLB.com. "That's something I've been able to do a little bit better, is keep guys off balance, kind of keep them in-between pitches, whereas the first couple of starts they were jumping on some fastballs because I was maybe throwing a lot more fastballs. So that's probably the biggest change. Trying to get them out front and then speed them up when they're looking soft. I think that's really the only thing I can tell you as far as a difference."

Stults improved to 1-1 for the season and now has an ERA of 4.03. He's projected to have his next start this Saturday against the Reds.

News
Braves pitcher Trevor Cahill took the loss Sunday, giving up four earned runs on five hits and three walks in six innings while striking out two in his team's 5-4 defeat against the Phillies.

Cahill (0-3) put himself in an early hole, serving up a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to fall behind 3-2. The Braves were able to tie the game in the third inning, but the starter surrendered an RBI triple, putting his team behind for good.

"Any time you lose a ballgame, it's tough," said Cahill to MLB.com. "But it was nice to go out there and at least go six innings and not feel like you're a burden on the bullpen. The best part about it was I was able to get up six times. One pitch hurt me in the first inning, but I was able to kind of bounce back after that."

Cahill has posted an 8.03 ERA and 5:7 K:BB ratio in 12 1/3 innings over three starts. His next start is scheduled for Friday against the Reds at home.

News
Braves catcher Christian Bethancourt knows manager Fredi Gonzalez has tough decisions to make. One of those decisions has been slotting veteran A.J. Pierzynski in the starting lineup more often this season than originally expected. Bethancourt is rolling with the punches and still thinks he can earn a starting role, according to MLB.com.

"You've got to respect the manager's decision," Bethancourt said. "He puts whoever he wants in the lineup. So, I've just got to be ready and wait for my opportunity. If he says I have to earn it, I will do my best to earn it. I have no problem with that."

Gonzalez has an idea of what he wants to do with Bethancourt.

"We want to give [Bethancourt] an opportunity, but the other guy, you put him in there every single time, and he just keeps hitting," Gonzalez said.

Bethancourt is hitting just .147 with two RBI in 34 at-bats this season.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez indicated Sunday that he's returning to his initial plan to use infielder Jace Peterson as his primary second baseman, MLB.com reports.

Peterson has shared time at second base with Alberto Callaspo, who has also made eight starts at third base, and Phil Gosselin, leading to Peterson seeing just 11 of a possible 17 starts at the position. He's seen action all over the starting lineup, batting first or second in four of the team's first five games but spending most of his time batting seventh or eighth as of late.

Peterson has hit just .171/.239/.220 in 41 at-bats. He's starting at second base and batting sixth in Sunday's matchup with the Phillies, in which the Braves are underdogs (+100).
