Shoulder - 15-day DL. Out until at least late May (Updated - 5/8/15)
News
Orioles pitcher Kevin Gausman, who has been sidelined since the start of the month with shoulder tendinitis, is tentatively scheduled to throw a simulated game on June 2, per MASNSports.com.

It's all part of a carefully calculated rehab plan by the Orioles, who will have Gausman throw a bullpen session Tuesday and face live hitters on Friday, setting the stage for the two-inning sim game. He will then likely head to Triple-A Norfolk to stretch his arm out.

Gausman is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in eight games this season.

News
Orioles first baseman Chris Davis went 2 for 4 at the plate in Baltimore's 5-4 win over the Astros on Wednesday.

Davis got things going in the fourth inning when he blasted a 3-2 pitch from Collin McHugh over the right field wall for a two-run home run. Then in the eighth, Davis did it again, this time off of Tony Sipp, to break a 4-4 tie, his 10th of the season.

"Thought I did a better job of making an adjustment and making him throw it in the zone," Davis said to MLB.com. "That's big not just for me, but for everyone in the lineup. I think the reputation on this team is out. A lot of teams are changing speed earlier in the count and trying to get us to chase."

Davis is now hitting .216 with 26 RBI on the year.

Orioles starter Chris Tillman lost his fifth straight decision to Houston on Tuesday, dropping to 1-6 on the year.

Tillman gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings. It's his second loss during the streak in which he's given up just two earned runs in seven innings.

"It's a step in the right direction for a guy we know is capable of pitching at a good level," manager Buck Showalter said. "We obviously haven't been giving our pitchers much margin for error, but he gave us a real good chance to win tonight. Probably even a little bit better than that."

Tillman struck out five and walked three. His next start is Sunday, against Tampa Bay.

The Orioles recalled catcher Steve Clevenger from Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday. To clear a roster spot, catcher Ryan Lavarnway was designated for assignment.

Clevenger never appeared in a game for Baltimore before being demoted to the minors in early April. He hit .352 with with two home runs, three doubles and 14 RBI in 27 games. He also has 11 walks and 10 strikeouts.

"I'm excited," he said to MASN Sports. "I'm going to try and help the team anyway I can. Feeling good at the plate and I have been playing really well out there. I'm just excited to get out on the field and play here.

"I went down there on a mission," he said. "Coming into spring training this year, I wanted to focus more on my catching and I tried to do that. I went down there and played very well. Just tried to concentrate on my catching and helping the pitchers do what they can do best, and that's pitch and not worry about anything else. I was just playing solid defense down there."

Lavarnway appeared in just 10 games (eight starts) for Baltimore. He hit .107 (3 for 28) with one double, no home runs and no RBI.

Jimenez had issues in the second inning when he gave up back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Then after getting a flyout, Jimenez gave up an RBI double to Chris Carter.

Jimenez settled down after that, but had more problems in the seventh. Jimenez allowed two consecutive hitters to reach base safely, followed by a fielder's choice to plate a run. Then, he served up a two-run shot to Evan Gattis to tie the game.

Jimenez, who remains 3-3, struck out five with just one walk in his outing. He will look to bounce back Monday again against the Astros.

News
Orioles reliever Brian Matusz was issued an eight-game suspension by MLB Monday as punishment for being caught with a "foreign substance" on his arm during Saturday's game against the Marlins.

Matusz was ejected in the 12th inning on Saturday after it was brought to the umpires' attention that Matusz had a visible substance on his arm. When the home plate umpire determined it was an illegal substance, he discussed with Orioles manager Buck Showalter briefly before ejecting Matusz from the game.

Matusz will appeal the suspension, which is the same doled out to Brewers reliever Will Smith after he was caught with an illegal substance on his arm earlier in the week.

"Each case is different and that's why you have the appeal process to make sure it's not just some blanket punishment," manager Buck Showalter said, per MASNSports.com. "I'm sure that's why it's in place, to find out if this is different. You've got to start somewhere and that's why the process is in place. And when it's over and said and they decide how many games it is compared to everything else, I'll probably be a little more opinionated on it."

Matusz is 1-2 with a 3.18 ERA in 14 appearances this season.

Orioles catcher Matt Wieters is still working his way through a rehab assignment, but will only be behind the plate every other day, according to MLB.com.

Wieters is building back his stamina before he catches on consecutive days.

"And it's going to be a slow process. I've sort of come to terms with that, it's not going to be going back to catching four, five days in a row," Wieters said. "It's how I feel. The every other [day] feels good now and as soon as that little soreness that we have in between is gone, we will start by picking up a ball the day after I catch and go from there. Every other day is better than not playing at all for me right now."

Wieters was able to catch a full game on Tuesday for Double-A Bowie and will catch Thursday and Saturday.

"I'm ready to go," he said. "Yesterday, I was able to get a little bit of a heartbeat going playing under the lights at Bowie. I've been waiting for almost a year now to get back out there."

Orioles pitcher Wei-Yin Chen didn't factor into the decision on Monday, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits in five innings while striking out six and walking none in his team's 4-3 win over the Astros.

Chen was staked to a 2-0 lead after the second inning, but he served up a solo home run in the third inning and followed it up by giving up two runs on a bloop single in the fifth. It was the first time in six starts that the starter failed to complete six innings.

"I allowed a lot of hits today," Chen said through interpreter Louis Chao, per MASNSports.com. "But I'm thankful for my teammates, who played good defense behind me. That ball wasn't hit that hard, but it dropped in a bad place for me. All I can do after that is manage damage control."

Chen owns a 3.13 ERA and 44:14 K:BB ratio in 54 2/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Rays on Saturday.

Orioles pitcher Mike Wright tossed seven scoreless innings on Saturday, allowing three hits in Baltimore's 1-0 loss to the Marlins in 13 innings, but did not factor into the decision.

Wright faced the minimum hitters through four innings, but ran into some issues in the fifth. After hitting leadoff man Martin Prado, Wright picked up two quick outs. Then after a walk put two men on, Wright forced a groundout to end the inning.

Wright, who remains 1-0, maintained his perfect 0.00 ERA in 14 1/3 innings of work.

"It's special. He got his first base hit tonight," manager Buck Showalter said to MASN Sports. "He'll probably like that more. So proud of him and Oliver. I know you all get tired of me talking about those guys, what's going on down there, but we're getting to see a reflection of it. We were short in the bullpen and those guys gave us meaningful (innings). ... To think we were going to get that out of them. Sleep fast and see if we've got enough people to get through tomorrow."

He will look to keep things rolling Thursday against the White Sox.

Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez had a rough outing in Sunday’s 5-2 loss to the Marlins.

Gonzalez went just four innings and allowed five earned runs and 10 hits in the outing. He walked three batters and only struck out two. All five runs were spread out from the second through fifth innings.

Gonzalez was relieved in the fifth inning before the Orioles recorded an out.

"Fastball command wasn't there for him," manager Buck Showalter said to MASN Sports. "That's something that's been really solid for him, and usually the pitch counts and sequences that he has in his favor weren't there.

"We got another great outing out of a call-up from Norfolk, Chaz (Roe). That was really impressive. And Brian (Matusz) gave us two needed innings. We're just trying to get back on our feet because we know that there's a chance we'll be playing with a six-man bullpen shortly."

Gonzalez has now allowed nine earned runs in his past two games. His ERA now sits at 3.83 for the season.

His next start is projected for Friday against the Rays.
