News
Pitching the second half of a doubleheader Wednesday, Cubs pitcher Travis Wood was knocked around for 11 hits but gave up just two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings while striking out two in his team's 2-0 loss to the Yankees.

The Yankees only managed one extra-base hit (a double) against Wood, who gave up one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. He owns a 3.00 ERA and 19:4 K:BB ratio in 18 innings. Wood (0-2) will face the Diamondbacks Monday or Tuesday.

News
Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija put together another strong start Friday, but still took the loss in a 4-1 loss.

Samardzija tossed seven innings for the fourth time in as many starts, but was ultimately downed by a lack of help from his defense. He allowed one earned run in the fifth inning, and then lost the game on a throwing error by second baseman Emilio Bonifacio which allowed the eventual winning runs to come across in the sixth.

Samardzija allowed three runs in seven innings, but only one was earned. He surrendered six hits and a pair of walks, while striking out seven batters on 114 pitches.

Samardzija has been the victim of terrible luck, as his record stands at 0-2 through four starts, despite twirling seven innings with two or fewer earned runs in each. He will put his 1.29 ERA up against the Diamondbacks in his next start, as he searches for his first win Wednesday.

News
Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta is at Wrigley Field so pitching coach Chris Bosio can monitor his progress, according to MLB.com.

Arrieta is slated for another rehab start before he's ready to return, but the club wants to keep tabs on his progress. Arrieta was dealing with a shoulder issue during spring, and is working his way back.

Cubs starter Jason Hammel pitched well Wednesday, but not well enough to keep up with Yankees star Masahiro Tanaka.

Hammel surrendered three runs on five hits in seven innings, walking three and struck out five. He has been consistent to start the season, giving up three runs or less in each of his three starts. He also boasts a record of 2-1.

His next start is slated for Monday against Arizona.

News
Cubs outfielder Justin Ruggiano will get a rest Friday against the Reds.

Ryan Sweeney is set to take over in center, while Junior Lake will start in left. Ruggiano has been mostly utilized as a spot-starter most of the year due to Emilio Bonifacio's hot start. Ruggiano is hitting just .143 in 21 at-bats.
