News
One of the strength drills Cubs strength coach Tim Buss had shortstop Starlin Castro do to strengthen his legs was carry teammate Mike Olt on his back and run forward and backward, MLB.com reports.

"I did some things I've never done in my life," Castro said. "It really makes you tired at the moment, but after that, a few days later, you feel good."

Castro has had hamstring problems the last two springs, so the team has decided to emphasize leg work heading into the start of camp Wednesday.

Manager Joe Maddon has yet to determine where to hit the shortstop in the lineup, but Castro has voiced his preference to be placed in a spot and left there.

"Wherever they put me, I'll try to do my job," Castro said. "The only thing I like is if he puts me six, seven, leave me there. I like one spot and that's it."

Castro spent most of the 2014 season batting cleanup but did bat second, third, fifth and sixth in at least four games each. He hit .292/.339/.438 with 14 home runs, 65 RBI and four stolen bases in 528 at-bats last season.

News
Cubs infielder Tommy La Stella said he feels "very comfortable" playing at third base, per MLB.com.

La Stella began to take reps at third base after the Cubs indicated he needed to be able to play more than second base to make the roster following his acquisition from Atlanta.

"It takes a second to get used to, but luckily they gave me the heads up, so I've been able to work out over there for several months," he said.

News
Cubs utility man Arismendy Alcantara is going to play a lot of positions this season, according to ESPN.

Alcantara saw time in center last season, but the team's trade for Dexter Fowler will alter his role. Alcantara says he's ready for the challenge. "Mentally you have to be ready for that," Alcantara said. "They want me to play second base and the outfield." He's also expected to see some time at third base.

Manager Joe Maddon is glad to have such a versatile player on the team. "When you get a guy like that and you want to give someone a rest, you don't feel like you're losing anything," Joe Maddon said. "And the big attraction there is also in-game. It's like having an extra guy on the bench."

The 23-year-old Alcantara hit .205/.254/.367 over 278 at-bats last year.
