News
The Cubs have received inquiries this spring on their backup catcher Welington Castillo but team president Theo Epstein said he does not expect to trade him prior to Opening Day, reports MLB.com.

“We don’t think it’s a high likelihood we’ll make a move outside of this camp,” Epstein said. “We think we have a lot of answers here in camp and as we look forward into the season with what we have at Triple-A, it’s pretty good.”

Along with Castillo, the Cubs are likely to break camp with catchers Miguel Montero and David Ross.

Castillo is hitting .281 this spring with two home runs and seven RBI in 32 at-bats.

News
Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta tossed five strike outs over four scoreless innings of work Saturday. Arrieta also added a three-run home run and an RBI double to help his own cause, something he simply called a good work day, reports MLB.com.

"i like it," Arrieta said. "I think it allows us to put a little speed behind me. I feel I can handle the bat well. Depending on the situation, I feel I can put a bunt down efficiently."

Arrieta feels comfortable with the bat in his hand, partially why manager Joe Maddon is considering batting the pitcher eighth in the order.

"It is the pitcher, and it seems like a break in the lineup, but we feel we can do some damage there and help us out," Arrieta said.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon indicated Sunday that he's not concerned with the struggles of pitcher Jason Motte, who has posted a 14.21 ERA in 6 1/3 spring innings, the Chicago Tribune reports.

"Something that I’m not often into is mechanical adjustments," Maddon said of Motte. "It's something that [pitching coach Chris Bosio] picked up on in a conversation. I'm not worried about him. I think the velocity is very good. Just the shape of his pitches were different."

News
With the No. 2 spot still undecided in the Cubs' lineup, manager Joe Maddon said outfielder Jorge Soler could be the man for the job, according to MLB.com.

“He’s a really interesting baseball player,” Maddon said. “I’d heard good things, but his impression on me has been really strong.”

Outfielder Chris Coghlan has been the frontrunner for the role but Maddon likes Soler's plate discipline.

“With [Soler], it goes beyond his power. This guy looks over a baseball now. This guy has great decision-making ability at the plate," Maddon said. That bleeds into either you’re driving in the second leadoff hitter plus one, or he’s setting up somebody after him because the guy is going to take his walks."

Soler is hitting .333 this spring with three home runs, eight doubles and 20 RBI.

Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks surrendered five earned runs on seven hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings while striking out five in Monday's 8-5 win over the Giants.

Hendricks had tossed seven scoreless innings in his first two Cactus League games, but Monday's action was his first in a major-league game since March 14. He's expected to open the season in the team's rotation.

Arm - Out until at least early April (Updated - 3/31/15)
News
Cubs pitcher Jon Lester tossed 84 pitches in a minor league game in Arizona Tuesday, striking out four in the outing.

"I wasn't the sharpest today but got to where we needed to," Lester said. "Once we get into a game with some fans and some adrenaline, I think things will sharpen up a little bit."

Lester, who is dealing with a tired arm, was scratched from his last Cactus League start. He is still on track to start Sunday's season opener against the Cardinals.

"We'll figure it out," Lester said. "In this game, there's always things you have to overcome, and this is part of it. Come Sunday, everything will be fine. We'll go out there and have a game plan."

News
Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo is better known as a power hitter. But Saturday, the club gave him a chance to bat leadoff in a split-squad game.

"I think I'm your prototypical leadoff hitter," Rizzo said. "I'm going to try to see some pitches, get on base. We don't steal much on this team anyway."

Rizzo, who normally bats third in the order, gave the lineup a breath of fresh air, according to manager Joe Maddon.

"It kind of freshens them up a bit," Maddon said. "The big thing is to protect him, and if you don't, he's not going to get pitched to."

Cubs pitcher Edwin Jackson surrendered just one hit Sunday in 4 2/3 innings against the Royals. Jackson, who missed his last start after his GPS sent him to the wrong ballpark, is battling with Travis Wood for the final spot in the starting rotation.

Jackson is now 2-1 with a 5.28 ERA in five spring training starts.

Cubs outfielder Chris Denorfia took batting practice on Tuesday, but he still hasn't been cleared to play.

Denorfia has not played since March 17, due to a hamstring injury, and time is running out.

"Opening Day is still in jeopardy," manager Joe Maddon said, per MLB.com. "You have to figure that out when you fill out the roster, too."

"We have to get some real clarity by [Wednesday]," Maddon said.

Phil Coke told reporters his reworked mechanics helped him earn a roster spot as a reliever with the Cubs, according to MLB.com.

"They took their time, they made the decisions they wanted to make, and I'm still here, and I'm happy about it," Coke said. "There was a moment of wondering. I don't know what's going on upstairs, that's not my concern."

Coke went 5-2 with a 3.88 ERA and one save in 62 relief appearances for Detroit in 2014. He signed a minor-league deal on March 5, and has yet to surrender a run in 7 2/3 innings of work this spring.

News
Mike Olt is expected to be the Cubs' starting third baseman on Opening Day for a second straight year with the demotion of Kris Bryant to the minors. Even with the potential for Chicago to bring Bryant to the majors quickly, Olt is feeling confident heading into the 2015 season.

"It feels a lot different," Olt said of this season versus last year, per MLB.com. "I was able to go up there last year and learned a lot of things. I feel I'm back to the player who can really compete instead of the player who you hope is ready and you hope the swing is there. It's a lot different feeling, a lot less stressful."

Olt is having a decent spring at the plate, batting .279 with a .392 on-base percentage, .558 slugging percentage and .950 OPS in 19 games. It's a nice turnaround after batting .160 in 89 games in the majors last season.

"I had two crazy years and a lot of things happened to me," said Olt of some injury issues. "Now I feel it's in the past, and I have a new outlook on baseball and a new outlook on my career. I used to be one of those [top prospects like Bryant] -- and you forget about that. I feel myself becoming that guy again, and it makes baseball fun again."
