News
Cubs rookie second baseman and natural shortstop Addison Russell has been merely mediocre offensively since his arrival, but it's his defense that has been a real problem.

Russell has a league-leading six errors in 29 games, which would translate to 33 over a full season. He understands the transition will take time.

"It's been pretty difficult to learn a new position at the big league level, but it's something I believe I can handle," he told ESPN. "There's going to be points in time at second base where there is a play that's unfamiliar to me."

Russell has tried to simplify the mental aspect of his defense.

"Playing a ground ball in general is playing a ground ball," he said. "It's just a different angle and some different footwork. Other than that, there's different jobs like covering first that I'm getting accustomed to and different cutoff relays. There's new responsbilities with a new position and I'm trying to learn all that."

Russell has been fairly productive at the plate, but he has 42 strikeouts in 108 at-bats, which ranks him among the worst in baseball in making contact.

News
Cubs pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada allowed one run on four hits in 5 1/3 innings of work in Chicago's 2-1 loss to the Nationals on Monday, but did not factor into a decision.

Wada made just one glaring mistake in his start, allowing a leadoff home run to Denard Span in the first inning. After that, Wada settled down and recorded six strikeouts with just two walks in his outing.

"I liked the way it set up for us a lot," manager Joe Maddon said per MLB.com. "I wanted him to pitch to the lefty one more time, which was Harper. I really liked how we had it stacked after that. One pitch, and that's how this game is played sometimes. Our bullpen was outstanding again, too."

Wada, who remains 0-0, moved his ERA to 2.70 in 10 innings of work. He will look to pick up his first win of the year on Sunday against the Royals.

News
By definition, Cubs starter Jake Arrieta (4-4) posted a quality start in Saturday's loss to the Diamondbacks. The right-hander went six innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on seven hits. He walked two and struck out seven as his ERA rose to 2.95.

A couple of miscues from the defense, coupled with a sixth-inning home run from D-Backs catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, hurt Arrieta in this one. But luckily for him, his offense was able to erase a deficit, and Arrieta picked up a no decision. He'll hope for better fortunes in his next start Friday against the Royals.

News
Cubs pitcher Jason Hammel allowed four runs on five hits in seven innings of work in Chicago's 4-3 loss to the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Hammel allowed a run in the first inning, but had his most issues in the third. After allowing a leadoff triple to Nick Ahmed, Hammel gave up a run when pitcher Jeremy Hellickson hit a sac fly to center. Then, Hammel surrendered a two-run home run to Paul Goldschmidt.

"(The Diamondbacks) are a very first-pitch fastball hitting team," Hammel said to the Chicago Tribune. "They ambushed a lot of them, and I started throwing sliders and the results were better."

Hammel, now 3-2, alos struck out nine with just one walk and moved his ERA to 2.98 on the year. He will look to get back on track on Saturday against the Royals.

News
Cubs closer Hector Rondon blew a save Friday night in Arizona, his third blown save of the season. The right-hander served up a game-tying two-run home run to Paul Goldschmidt in the 10th inning in the eventual 5-3 Diamondbacks win.

But Rondon, who is in the third season of his career, knows where he went wrong.

"I need better location," Rondon said Saturday, per MLB.com. "I know that pitch ran up a little to the middle [to Goldschmidt]. I think that's why we lost the game yesterday, those pitches."

Manager Joe Maddon has expressed faith in his 27-year-old closer, and a change does not seem to be in the cards, at least for now.

"He knows what he did wrong," said Maddon. "I'll say [to him], 'Hey, listen, everything's cool. I still have a lot of trust and support.' It's one of those things that happens in our game."

Rondon has blown two of his last three save opportunities.
