News
Cubs catcher Miguel Montero had not been making a case early this season for daily duty. That is, until Saturday.

Montero, who has only been a semi-regular this season, slammed his first two home runs of the year in a victory over San Diego. He launched one off starter Tyson Ross in the sixth and another the following inning off Chris Rearick to raise his average from .105 to .174.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon expressed his appreciation for Montero following the game - and not just for what he did on the field against the Padres.

"Miggy is always, always into the game, always," Maddon told ESPN. "I give him credit. He's a (31 year old), but this guy loves to play baseball. don't be misconceived, some guys arent always like that even if they are in the major leagues and have been baseball players. Not everyboy likes to play the game like he does. He has a true passion for it and I really appreciate that."

His first blast would have been the game-winner had the Padres not scored four in the ninth.

News
Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro has faced his fair share of criticism through the years for his defense. Well, the three-time All-Star is looking to put an end to that this season.

"I have good talent to be a good shortstop," Castro said, per MLB.com. "I don't want to be no joke anymore. I'm going to try to make every play aggressive. If it happens, it happens.

"[Manager Joe Maddon] says the most impressive thing for him is, 'Next year in front of home plate, they give you a Gold Glove [Award]. It's really important to me, too."

Thus far, the results have been positive for Castro. He has committed just one error in 12 games, resulting in a .983 fielding percentage. He has 21 putouts, 36 assists and has turned three double plays.

Castro's teammates and coaches are taking notice.

"I saw something out of him [Monday] that I hadn't seen in a while," starting pitcher Jake Arrieta said. "He seemed to have more of an aggressive nature about him. He was fluid. He was just tremendous at short. He stood out to me on the defensive side."

"I don't know if you've seen him play better shortstop," Maddon said.

The Cubs selected the contract of pitcher Gonzalez Germen and optioned outfielder Matt Szczur to Triple-A Iowa Sunday.

Germen made 25 appearances with the Cubs last season, posting a 4.75 ERA and 31:14 K:BB ratio in 30 1/3 innings. He tossed 4 2/3 hitless innings in Triple-A before being brought up but issued three walks while striking out five.

Szczur went 2 for 10 with three walks and two stolen bases before being optioned.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Germen, the Cubs also transferred pitcher Jacob Turner to the 60-day disabled list. He's recovering from a flexor strain and bone bruise in his elbow.

Cubs third-string catcher Welington Castillo drew his third start of the season Tuesday against the Pirates. His history against Francisco Liriano likely played a part in manager Joe Maddon's decision-making.

Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta allowed just one run over seven innings of work in Chicago's 5-2 win over the Pirates Monday.

Arrieta only saw issues in the first inning when he allowed an RBI single to Andrew McCutchen, driving in Gregory Polanco. He settled in after that, recording seven strikeouts over his final six innings of work.

Arrieta, now 2-1 on the year, boasts a 1.74 ERA in 20 2/3 innings this season. He will look to keep rolling Saturday against the Reds.

News
Cubs starter Jason Hammel had a shot to shut down San Diego on Friday and earn his second win of the season. But one mighty swing off the bat of Wil Myers against reliever Brian Schlitter wrecked that possibility.

Hammel was rolling along through six having yielded two runs on five hits. But back-to-back singles knocked him out of the game and eventually saddled him with a no-decision.

The two runs charged to him that inning raised his ERA to 5.11. Hammel will seek to lower it Wednesday at Pittsburgh.

Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant went 3 for 4 at the plate in Chicago's 5-2 win over the Pirates Monday. Bryant drove in three of the team's five runs in the game, including the tying RBI in the fifth and go-ahead in the seventh.

"I try to go out there and do things the right way, on and off the field," Bryant said, per the Chicago Tribune. "I try to get better every day, and these special things that come along with it are just icing on the cake. I am focused on what I have to do here. Those things are just a thing on the side."

Bryant ripped his second double of the year to deep center off Arquimedes Caminero in the seventh to score Jorge Soler and Anthony Rizzo, before advancing to third on the throw to the plate and eventually scoring on a fielding error.

Bryant is now hitting .429 with four RBI in 14 at-bats this season.

Cubs closer Hector Rondon had been a picture-perfect pitcher early in 2015, but was far from perfect on Saturday.

Entering having not yielded a run in six outings, he sought his third save with his team leading 6-2 and two Padres on base in the ninth inning. He allowed a double and two singles, the second of which, by Yangervis Solarte, tied the game.

Rondon did induce a Wil Myers groundout with the go-ahead run on second to escape further damage.

News
In his first start of the season, Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks simply pitched lousy. In his second start on Saturday, he simply got screwed.

He appeared destined to win after pitching six strong innings and watching his team take a 6-2 lead into the ninth, but the bullpen blew it and the Cubs required extra innings to pull out the win.

Hendricks lowered his ERA from 10.38 to 6.10 by shutting out San Diego after a Matt Kemp two-run homer in the first. He walked none, fanned eight and retired 14 consecutive batters.

He will again seek his first victory Thursday afternoon in Pittsburgh.

Despite Jon Lester's rough start to his Cubs' career, manager Joe Maddon has not lost faith in the free-agent left hander, per the Chicago Tribune.

Lester suffered the loss to the Padres on Sunday, giving up three earned runs in six innings.

"He's getting better. I think he is getting a little sharper with everything," Maddon said. "He still seemed frustrated on certain pitches today ... [but] I think it was a nice step forward."

Lester (0-2, 6.89 ERA) signed a six-year, $155 million contract with the Cubs during the offseason.

News
Cubs starting pitcher Travis Wood takes the hill Tuesday to face off against NL Central foe Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, Wood did not have a lot of success against the Pirates in 2014.

The left-hander went 1-2 with a 6.63 ERA in four starts against Pittsburgh last season. He allowed at least three runs in three of his four starts.

Wood has had mixed results against Pittsburgh in his career. He went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one start against them in 2010, but went 1-2 with a 13.50 ERA in 2011 before going 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA in 2012 and 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 2013.

Although, most of his success against the Pirates have come at PNC Park. He is 5-1 with a 2.31 ERA in seven outings (six starts) at Pittsburgh's home park.

The Pirates enter play Tuesday with 48 runs, which is below the league average of 53.

Cubs infielder Arismendy Alcantara is just 2 for 26 with 11 strikeouts in the first two weeks of the season.

Alcantara saw significant action at second base and third base over the first 10 days of the season with the team dealing with multiple injuries in the infield, but he came off the bench in each of the team's three games against the Padres this weekend, with Jonathan Herrera drawing the start in each game and Kris Bryant joining the lineup Friday.

Alcantara could still work his way into playing time at second base but will need to start finding a way to make more contact after striking out three times in four at-bats against the Padres.

Alcantara was just 2 for 26 with five walks and one stolen base in 11 games with the Cubs. Olt is recovering from a hairline fracture in his wrist.
