Indians closer Chris Perez began his rehab assignment with Double-A Akron Tuesday, as expected, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Perez pitched one inning and allowed three home runs en route to giving up five runs on five hits and a hit batter. He had two strikeouts in the wild performance. Perez threw a scoreless inning for Class A Lake County Sunday. He allowed two hits and struck out one.

News
Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez was wild on Tuesday at home against the Royals. Jimenez gave up just two hits but was on the hook for the losing decision before Cleveland rallied late in the game.

Jimenez, who remains 5-4 on the season with the no-decision, walked four batters and threw 114 pitches over 5 2/3 innings as he allowed just two earned runs, both coming in the third inning. He struck out four.

Jimenez has gone 2-1 in his last four outings but has mostly pitched well in those starts with just six runs allowed over 21 2/3 innings with 18 Ks. Jimenez is scheduled to make his next start Monday at Baltimore.

News
Indians acting closer Vinnie Pestano recorded a save Tuesday night at home against the Royals despite Cleveland not taking a lead until it scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Pestano recorded his second save though he gave up three hits and a walk in the ninth to protect a one-run lead. He got a strikeout and baserunning error by the Royals. Pestano needed 22 pitches and his ERA is at 4.05.

With Chris Perez on the mend, Pestano's time as closer may be nearing an end.

News
Indians outfielder Michael Brantley heads into Monday's game against the Royals looking to end a hitting slump that has reached multiple weeks. Brantley is batting .177 (11 for 62) in his last 18 games, dropping his season average from .316 to .280.

Brantley hasn't homered in 24 games and has managed just three RBI through 13 June games. He also has just one extra-base hit in his last 18 games.

Perhaps the Royals are the perfect remedy for Brantley. He's batting .389 (7 for 18) with one triple, two RBI and three doubles in four games against the Royals this season. In 44 career games against Kansas City, Brantley is batting .329 (57 for 173) with an .841 OPS and 22 RBI.

Kipnis heads into Monday's game against the Royals with a 10-game hitting streak. He's batting .432 (16 for 37) with one home run, three doubles and eight RBI in that span.

News
The Indians recalled third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall Tuesday, after the 24-year-old responded to a mid-May demotion with a thorough dismantling of Triple-A pitching. In 27 games, Chisenhall hit .390 with six home runs, two steals and a 1.132 OPS.

Chisenhall had a rough go of things earlier in the season, hitting .213 with three home runs in his first 94 at-bats with Cleveland. But the former top-25 prospect had shown plenty of promise in the minors before 2013, with a decent average, nice power potential and a handful of steals.

Chisenhall will probably play every day (with Mark Reynolds moving back to first base/DH), and is rosterable in most formats, especially considering the disappointing crop of third basemen so far. He should be good for double-digit home runs and a .265-.280 average.

News
Going back as far as Class A ball, Corey Kluber has put up some nice strikeout-to-walk ratios, but they didn't always translate into low ERAs. As Chris Cwik pointed out in an analysis earlier this month, a high BABIP rate has put a damper on Kluber's surface stats for the Indians, but in just over a month's time, Kluber has shaved more than two runs off his ERA.

Not only has Kluber been getting more outs on balls in play, compiling a .303 BABIP over his last seven starts, but overall this season, he has been stranding more of his baserunners. Kluber has a long history of subpar strand rates (established mostly in the minors), but this year his rate is a very normal-looking 73 percent.

Low strand rates are usually signs of better luck to come, but some pitchers, like Rick Porcello and Jeff Francis, have been mired in them for years. If Kluber can stay on his current course and keep a decent proportion of his runners from scoring, he is going to be able to help owners in standard mixed leagues over the rest of this season.

Indians infielder Mike Aviles, who is filling in for injured shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, doubled twice and tied a season high with three hits Saturday against the Nationals. He also scored twice and has five runs in his last five games.

Aviles is batting .306 (15 for 49) with one home run, three doubles, five RBI and seven runs in 13 June games. He has two stolen bases in that span.

News
Indians starter Carlos Carrasco came off a suspension and pitched extremely well Monday at home against Kansas City. He dramatically lowered his ERA in the process.

Carrasco took a no-decision as he allowed just one earned run on four hits and a walk over 7 1/3 solid innings. He threw just 90 pitches before being removed from the game after four strikeouts.

Unfortunately, James Shields was just as good and both pitchers left with the score tied at one run apiece. Carrasco lowered his ERA from 15.26 to 8.40 with the outing.

After having allowed 13 runs over his first two starts spanning 7 2/3 innings, Carrasco was much improved Monday. He'll look to keep improving in his next start scheduled for Sunday against Minnesota.

News
Indians infielder Mark Reynolds has a .234 average and 14 home runs over 235 at-bats this season. But his splits show a different player manning third base than the one slotted at first or DH.

Across 117 at-bats as the team's third baseman, Reynolds has hit .171 with five home runs and a .553 OPS. But  in 71 at-bats as a first baseman, Reynolds has hit .310 with five home runs and a .948 OPS. And in 46 at-bats as DH, Reynolds has hit .261 with a .939 OPS and four home runs.

With Lonnie Chisenhall being recalled Tuesday, Reynolds will move back to first base and DH duty. This could bring with it an uptick in his offensive output and give his 55 percent starting percentage a decent boost.

Kazmir has allowed 13 runs, including five home runs, over his last three starts (14 2/3 innings). He is scheduled to make his next start Friday at home against Minnesota. He is 0-4 with a 6.53 ERA in six road starts.

Quadriceps - 15-Day DL. Out until at least late June (Updated - 6/5/13)
News
Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, who has been on the DL since June 4 with a strained right quad muscle, ran in the outfield Monday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Cabrera also hit in the cage for the first time since suffering his injury.

"I feel good, really good," Cabrera said. "I could be a week, but no more than 10 days away. But we have to see how things go. I hope to be back soon."
