News
The Tigers recalled right-hander Alex Wilson from Triple-A Toledo and optioned left-hander Ian Krol down to Toledo prior to Thursday's contest against the Yankees, per the team's official website.

Wilson pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts in the minors. Krol held a 4.76 ERA over 5 2/3 innings with the big-league club.

"As far as I know, I got called up cause they needed an arm," Wilson said Thursday, per MLive.com. "I watched the game yesterday as well as everyone else, they ran through some guys. I'm here to help as long as I can."

News
Tigers pitcher Joba Chamberlain was called upon in the eighth inning of Monday's game against the Yankees with one out and runners on the corners, and he induced a Jacoby Ellsbury groundball that turned into a double play to get his team out of the inning in the eventual 2-1 win.

"I live for this stuff and these situations," Chamberlain said about the eighth-inning role, per MLive.com. "You get to face one of the best players in the league and get a chance to go do your thing."

Chamberlain threw just two pitches to rack up his two big outs Monday.

"He's had experience pitching in the eighth inning for us last year," manager Brad Ausmus said Monday. "And for the vast majority of the year he did it very well. I knew he could handle the pressure."

Chamberlain endured a rough spring but has posted 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his three appearances this season.

Tigers starter Kyle Lobstein (1-1) allowed just one run on three hits Tuesday but did not get any run support in his six innings of work, taking the loss against the Yankees.

The only blemish for Lobstein was a first-inning RBI double he allowed to Mark Teixeira.

"I would like to throw more strikes than that, try and get deeper in the game, Lobstein said. "But overall I was able to make some pitches to get out of some jams."

Lobstein walked four and struck out three in the defeat.

Lobstein's next scheduled start has not been announced as of Tuesday night.

News
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus told reporters that the wintry conditions made it tough for David Price to have any success Wednesday against the Yankees, according to MLB.com. Price struggled in midst of a snowstorm in Detroit, allowing eight earned runs over 2 1/3 innings. It was 37 degrees and windy at the start of the game before the snowstorm.

"I think without question the elements were the factor," Ausmus said. "I don't think he could feel the ball. … A guy like David who really locates well has to feel the ball coming off the end of his fingers. I don't think he was able to. I think it affected him in the sense that he couldn't feel the breaking ball, so he didn't go to it as much."

Price disagreed with Ausmus' assessment.

"In my mind, it was 72 and sunny with a heavy breeze blowing in," Price said, "so I just have to throw the ball better."

Elbow - 15-day DL. Out for season (Updated - 4/23/15)
News
Tigers closer Joe Nathan was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and a torn flexor pronator, which will require season-ending Tommy John surgery, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman confirms. Bob Nightengale of USA Today first reported.

Nathan, 40, was working his way back from flexor elbow strain when he aggravated the injury after throwing 10 pitchers in a Triple-A rehab outing on Wednesday. After the outing he told reporters he felt as if he broke his arm.

"There's no good time to have an injury like that. I don't know that Joe's done pitching," manager Brad Ausmus said, per Jason Beck of MLB.com.

The news of his torn UCL comes minutes after the club announced that they recalled the closer from his rehab assignment. Nathan's 2015 season comes to an end with one strikeout in just one-third of an inning. He is not considering retirement and will rehab in attempt to return to the big-league roster next season. He added that he won't be able to pick up a ball for eight months, per MLive.com.

"I'm preparing myself to come back and be a major league player again," Nathan said, per MLive.com. "Regardless of what the future holds for me, I'm going to prepare myself to come back and play this game. Hanging my cleats never crossed my mind."

Things appear to be looking up for Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez, who has been struggling so much with a knee ailment that Brad Ausmus has considered sitting him against right-handers.

Martinez told Ausmus on Tuesday that he feels good and the manager thinks he looks good as well. "He actually looked a lot better yesterday than he did the day before," Ausmus told the Detroit Free Press.

The switch-hitter, who is batting cleanup Tuesday against the Yankees, has emerged from a mini-slump with three hits Sunday and two hard-hit balls Monday.

News
The good times finally ended Friday for Tigers starting pitcher Shane Greene, who had allowed just two runs (one earned) through his first three starts.

The right-hander was charged with eight runs on nine hits and two walks in four-plus innings during a 13-1 loss Friday against the Indians. He struck out one.

Greene (3-1) had his issues from the get-go Friday. He gave up a two-out, two-run double to Brandon Moss in the first inning and surrendered a sac fly to Jose Ramirez in the second inning. He then fell apart in the fifth inning, as the Indians put six runs on the board -- five charged to Greene.

He left the game after Carlos' Santana's two-RBI double. Reliever Alex Wilson was then greeted by a three-run homer from Moss, which put Cleveland ahead 9-1.

"I felt really good, but I left some balls up and paid for it,'' Greene said. ''These are the best hitters in the world, and you have to make your pitches.''

Greene's ERA went from 0.39 to 3.00. He will look to get back on track in his next start Wednesday at Minnesota.

News
Tigers right-hander Anibal Sanchez didn't emerge with a win Thursday afternoon, but he did come out with a lot more peace of mind than he did after his previous two starts.

"No question, he threw the ball great today," Tigers catcher Alex Avila said, per MLive.com "For the conditions, normally he is a guy that sometimes the cold weather can affect. He threw it great, and had good command of his pitches."

Sanchez yielded just one run on one hit in six innings with four walks and eight strikeouts in a no-decision against the Yankees. That is a far cry from his last two outings, when he gave up 14 runs on 17 hits in 9 2/3 innings. His performance Thursday lowered his ERA from 7.71 to 5.96. If not for a run-scoring balk in the sixth, he might have earned the win.

"He threw strikes with all of his pitches, used all of them, mixed it up," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He probably, across the board, used all his pitches equally. He was very good with his changeup, very good with his slider and mixed in his curveball."

He will try to continue trending in the right direction next Tuesday against Minnesota.
