Tigers closer Joe Nathan gave up two hits Saturday but was able to strand runners on second and third base to earn his 33rd save in his team's 3-2 win over the Royals.

Nathan allowed a pair of one-out singles before a groundout advanced both runners and put the potential tying run just 90 feet away. Pectoral - 15-day DL. Expected to return Sept. 23 vs. Chicago White Sox (Updated - 9/22/14)
News
The Tigers will activate right-hander Anibal Sanchez from the 15-day DL Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Sanchez, who has been out since Aug. 8 with a strained pectoral, threw a simulated game Sunday.

Sanchez didn't have a chance to go on a minor-league rehab assignment because of the timing of his recovery, so he'll pitch out of the bullpen.

News
Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander turned in a strong start Friday against the Royals.

Verlander allowed one run on seven hits over 7 1/3 innings. He struck out four and did not issue any walks during the appearance. Verlander was exceptional to start the game, going seven scoreless innings to start things off. After giving up a double to open the bottom of the eighth, Verlander was pulled from the game. The run wound up coming around to score after Verlander left. He was charged with the run.

With the win, Verlander improved to 14-12. He'll take on the Twins in his next start.
