First baseman Miguel Cabrera was not in the Tigers lineup Monday, the first time all season the slugger has not started. Cabrera will be replaced at first base by Hernan Perez.

Manager Brad Ausmus said that Cabrera's ankle has been cranky the last few days, making Monday a good time to give the slugger an off-day following the team's flight to Oakland, the Detroit Free Press reports. He is available as a pinch-hitter against the A's.

"Just give him a day mentally," said Ausmus when asked if he considered tabbing Cabrera as the designated hitter, per MLive.com. "His ankle has been a little cranky the last few days, so it's a good time. Especially after the flight."

In addition, rookie shortstop Dixon Machado will make the first start of his MLB career and hit ninth for the Tigers. Machado was called up from Triple-A on Sunday as Jose Iglesias battles a sore knee.

Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez has had an up and down season, and Sunday, home runs were once again a problem as the pitcher picked up a no-decision in the Tigers' 10-8 loss to the Astros.

Sanchez gave up two sixth-inning home runs to bring his total to 11 this season -- over the prior two campaigns, Sanchez had given up just 13 homers.

For the second straight start, Sanchez allowed seven earned runs, negating his 11 strikeouts.

"I thought all my pitches were working well today. Even the two homers were both down -- really down -- and they just put good swings on them," Sanchez said.

Justin Verlander will make his first rehab start on Sunday with Triple-A Toledo, according to MLive.com. The Tigers' right-hander threw a simulated game on Tuesday and seems to have come out of it with no issues, leading to his rehab start.

"It’s all going to depend on how the first one goes. Then we’ll make a decision," Ausmus said, per the Detroit Free Press.

Verlander is working his way back from a triceps injury that has kept him out of action all season so far.
