Back - Out until at least early March (Updated - 2/27/15)
News
Tigers catcher Alex Avila is still dealing with a back injury and will not participate in practice Saturday, reports MLive.com. It is the second consecutive day Avila will miss with the back injury.

Manager Brad Ausmus said he'd be shocked if Avila is not practicing Sunday.

News
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus is feeling confident about his pitching staff headed into the start of the season. So much so, that he's expecting six of the seven spots to already be taken by Joe Nathan, Joakim Soria, Bruce Rondon, Al Alburquerque and Joba Chamberlain, reports MLive.com.

"Those six, it'd be surprising if they weren't on the team," Ausmus said Friday morning. "Something strange would have to happen just based on their performances from the past."

This leaves Alex Wilson, Josh Zeid and Buck Farmer all battling for the final slot in the bullpen.

"You're always concerned about injuries," Ausmus said. "I think that's where the depth comes into play, where, if something unexpected comes up, we have a lot of arms we feel like can produce at the major league level. ... If something happens at any time, we feel that we have a quality arm that we can slide right in."

Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias, who used an Alter-G anti-gravity treadmill on Tuesday, finally took to the field on Friday for some baserunning and other workouts, per MLive.com. The 25-year-old shortstop missed all of last season due to fractures in both of his shins.

"We ran bases today, then he took grounders, did the fundamental and he hit," manager Brad Ausmus said. "When he got done hitting, I sent him inside. I didn't want him standing out in the outfield shagging. I don't want to say that's going to be the straw that breaks the camel's back, but any little bit of time we can get him off his feet early helps. So I sent him in about 10 minutes early."

News
Although pitchers tend to be ahead of hitters early in spring, teammates of Tigers right-hander Alfredo Simon have been impressed by his stuff thus far, per the Detroit Free Press on Thursday.

"He's got nasty stuff," catcher Alex Avila said. "It wasn't just from catching him today noticing that -- it was catching him from his first bullpen sessions and watching video.

"He's got nasty, electric stuff, and with him, it's always about being able to throw it for strikes, and today, he looked good. It looks like he's getting ready for the season."

Simon was acquired via trade from Cincinnati in December. He is ahead of most pitchers in camp based on his pitch-count. He tossed 75 pitches during Wednesday's bullpen session, most by any Detroit pitcher thus far this spring.

"I just try to keep my arm ready to go," Simon said. "That's why I throw so many pitches, because I try to throw to make my arm stronger to make it feel like a normal thing."

Ankle - Questionable for start of season (Updated - 2/24/15)
News
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Thursday star slugger Miguel Cabrera (ankle) is running at 65 percent body weight with a slight incline on the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill, per MLive.com.

Ausmus added once Cabrera gets to 80 percent body weight on the treadmill, he can start fielding grounders hit directly to him.

Cabrera already has the option to hit on the field against a batting practice pitcher. However, he has chosen to hit in the batting cages.

Tigers backup catcher Bryan Holaday told reporters he has tweaked his stance and swing after experiencing an "eye-opening" 2014 campaign, according to the Detroit Free Press

"I've made a lot of adjustments; I feel better and I'm more confident," Holaday said. "I've done a little tweaking with my stance and my swing to make it more efficient. Basically shortened the swing to make my timing better."

Holaday hit .231/.266/.276 in 171 at-bats last season. Manager Brad Ausmus appears to be impressed by Holaday's adjustments at the plate early on.

"He looks good swinging the bat," Ausmus said. "It's early, but he looks good."

Knee - Questionable for start of season (Updated - 2/5/15)

Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez was in town for photo day Saturday and is expected to report to spring training Monday, manager Brad Ausmus told reporters.

Martinez is still rehabbing from a knee injury and has yet to be cleared to participate in baseball activities. The 36-year-old hit .335/.409/.565 over 561 at-bats last year.

Tigers reliever Joel Hanrahan isn't sure what's next after being shut down from throwing, according to Peter Gammons.

Hanrahan had Tommy John surgery back in 2013, and did not pitch in the majors last season while he was recovering. He had trouble getting through a recent bullpen session, and was shut down by Detroit.

The 33-year-old has a career 3.85 ERA over 404 2/3 innings.
