The Mariners have optioned pitcher Roenis Elias to Triple-A Tacoma, the team announced Sunday.

An earlier report Sunday said that the team was considering going with a six-man rotation, and it's possible that could still come to pass, with Elias making frequent trips to and from the active roster. For now, it appears Taijuan Walker will serve as the team's fifth starter.

The Mariners also reassigned the following eight players to minor-league camp Sunday: catcher John Baker, outfielder Endy Chavez, infielders Shawn O'Malley and Carlos Rivero and pitchers Mark Lowe, Jordan Pries, Kevin Correia and Joe Saunders .

Rangers right-hander Juan Carlos Oviedo was informed that he won't break camp with the club, and was offered a minor-league assignment, according to MLB.com. Oviedo signed a minor-league contract with the club in January, and has the option to refuse the assignment and take his release, which he did.

Oviedo has been sidelined since March 14 with biceps tendinitis. He posted a 4.91 ERA in four spring appearances.

Twins pitcher Ricky Nolasco allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks in six innings while striking out three in his team's 6-5 win over the Orioles Sunday.

Nolasco served up back-to-back home runs in the first inning but was able to settle down after, giving up just an unearned run over the last five innings of work.

"I kind of picked the wrong day to give up fly balls," Nolasco said after the outing, per MLB.com. "I'd been getting ground balls all spring, but gave up some fly balls today with the wind blowing. I just tried to limit the damage from there and get my work in."

Nolasco was able to retire 10 batters in a row during his best stretch of the game. He has posted a 4.12 ERA and 16:5 K:BB ratio in 19 2/3 spring innings.

Although he's slated to start on Friday for the Marlins, all signs indicate that the club won't showcase pitcher Brad Hand to other teams this spring. According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, the left-hander won't be traded before the season starts and is expected to remain in Miami.

Hand, who was the subject of trade rumors to the Rangers earlier this spring, has registered a 1.80 ERA over 10 innings of work in Grapefruit League play.

Red Sox pitcher Edward Mujica will start the season in the closer role, manager John Farrell confirmed on Sunday.

With Koji Uehara unlikely to be ready to start the year, Farrell said Mujica would get first shot at closing.

"There’s been times where he’s thrown a ball down and away to right-handers with good stuff," Farrell said, per WEEI. "Right now, he would be the guy that we turn to in closing situations. I will also say that we would look to matchup in the ninth inning as well. We’ll look to exploit the best matchup, and that could be any one of three or four guys down there to finish a game."

News
With the No. 2 spot still undecided in the Cubs' lineup, manager Joe Maddon said outfielder Jorge Soler could be the man for the job, according to MLB.com.

“He’s a really interesting baseball player,” Maddon said. “I’d heard good things, but his impression on me has been really strong.”

Outfielder Chris Coghlan has been the frontrunner for the role but Maddon likes Soler's plate discipline.

“With [Soler], it goes beyond his power. This guy looks over a baseball now. This guy has great decision-making ability at the plate," Maddon said. That bleeds into either you’re driving in the second leadoff hitter plus one, or he’s setting up somebody after him because the guy is going to take his walks."

Soler is hitting .333 this spring with three home runs, eight doubles and 20 RBI.

News
The Astros optioned third baseman Matt Dominguez and pitchers Jake Buchanan and Max Stassi to the minors Sunday while reassigning shortstop Carlos Correa, infielder Gregorio Petit, catcher Tyler Heineman and pitchers Darin Downs and James Hoyt to minor-league camp.

Dominguez opened last season as the team's starting third baseman but found himself behind in the race for a bench role this spring.

"[Luis] Valbuena had an amazing spring so far and is basically going to be our third baseman and that leaves Matt in competition with some of the other guys for an extra spot on the roster, a spot off the bench, and right now we feel like there’s a couple of other guys ahead of him and he needs to play every day," general manager Jeff Lunhow said, per MLB.com "Right now he’ll go down to Fresno and play third and play some first and be ready when the need arises."

Correa is the team's top-rated prospect but has yet to play above high Class A.

"Carlos is going to be a star player in the big leagues. It’s just a matter of time," Luhnow said. "Having never had an at-bat in Double-A, he needs to go get some regular work in the high minors. He did a great job for us on the field as well as off the field and I think he’s got a lot of fans in the organization and he impressed the big league staff, which is what you want as a young player."

Tigers pitcher Anibal Sanchez tossed 10 strikeouts in Sunday's game against the Phillies, going 6 1/3 innings and surrendering four runs on five hits.

"That means he's hitting his spots. It means he's locating," manager Brad Ausmus said to MLB.com. "When a guy takes a pitch, he thinks it's a ball or just off the corner and they end up getting the call. ... So he must have been locating. It looked like he was locating his fastball."

Ausmus also indicated he hopes to see Sanchez reach 200 innings this season.

"If we get 200 innings out of Sanchy, I'll be extremely happy. I think we'll be in a very good spot," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Sunday morning. "We talk about a lot of things, but if Sanchy can stay healthy, that would be an enormous plus for us."
