Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas went 1 for 3 with a solo home run in his team's 8-1 loss to the Yankees Monday.

After the Yankees scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning, Moustakas answered with his blast in the bottom half of the inning. It would be the last sign of life from the Royals offense in the game. Moustakas has hit .208/.268/.389 with 15 home runs and 49 RBI in 355 at-bats.

Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer could begin playing rehab games soon, according to FoxSports.

Hosmer was able to take batting practice Thursday. There's a chance he could begin a rehab assignment as soon as this weekend. Hosmer has been sidelined since July 31 with a hand issue.

Royals pitcher Danny Duffy turned in a strong start Tuesday against the Twins.

Duffy allowed one run on four hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two during the outing. Duffy was fantastic to open the game, tossing six scoreless innings. He gave up his only run of the game during the seventh inning. Duffy gave up a double to open the frame, and then allowed a run-scoring single to Joe Mauer. The Royals couldn’t scratch any runs across with Ricky Nolasco on the mound, putting Duffy in line for the loss despite his strong start.

The Royals managed a comeback in the ninth inning, giving Duffy a no-decision. He’ll take on the Indians in his next start.

The Royals have sent down reliever Aaron Crow to Double-A Northwest Arkansas to make room on the roster for Wednesday spot-starter Liam Hendriks. Crow is expected to return to the bigs when the rosters expand.

Crow has struggled of late with six runs allowed on seven hits in his last 3 1/3 innings pitched.

The Royals activated pitcher Scott Downs from the disabled list Thursday, and optioned pitched Liam Hendricks to Double-A Northwest Arkansas, the team announced.

Downs has been out since early August due to a neck injury, and had a 5.29 ERA in 34 innings of work prior to the injury.

Royals pitcher Bruce Chen had a big time meltdown Thursday against the Twins.

Chen entered with the game tied in the top of the 10th inning. After notching a strikeout against the first batter he faced, Chen gave up a triple and two walks to load the bases. Two singles quickly gave the Twins a three-run lead. Chen was then able to induce a pop out for the second out of the inning. With two outs, he allowed two straight doubles, plating another three runs.

When all was said and done, Chen gave up six runs on five hits during his one inning of work. His record dropped to 2-4.

Royals pitcher James Shields was knocked around Monday against the Yankees. 

Shields allowed six runs on 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked three during the outing. Shields ran into some trouble in the third and fourth innings, giving up a run in each frame. He really struggled in the seventh, though. Shields allowed a home run to the lead off man to open the seventh. He then put two men on with singles. After getting the first out, Shields gave up two run-scoring singles to the next two batters. The sixth and final run came across on a sac fly. Shields was replaced after he walked Carlos Beltran with two outs in the seventh inning.

With the loss, Shields dropped to 12-7. He’ll take on the Indians in his next start.

With one out in the first, the Twins managed to put runners on second and third. One run would come in on a groundout. The other would score on a single. Guthrie made it through the next two innings unscathed, but gave up two more runs in the fourth inning. He gave up his final run on a walk and a double in the sixth inning. 

Guthrie exited with the game tied, picking up the no-decision. He’ll take on the Rangers in his next start.
