Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer reached base four times Wednesday, in a 5-4 win over the Rays.

Hosmer extended his hitting streak to nine games by going 1 for 2 with a home run, but he did extra damage without swinging the bat. Hosmer walked four times and scored twice in the win.

Hosmer has struggled through the first half of the season, but is hitting .400 with eight walks over his last nine games. He is hitting .260/.310/.366 in 369 at-bats overall.

Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura lasted five innings Wednesday against the Rays. 

Ventura ran into big issues with his control, and it wound up hurting him in a big way. In the fourth inning, Ventura gave up a single and two walks to load the bases. With two outs, he allowed a grand slam to Kevin Kiermaier. He lasted just one more inning before being pulled. Ventura tossed 104 pitches during the start.

Ventura gave up four earned runs on five hits over five innings. He walked four and struck out five during the appearance. The Royals managed to come back and win the game, saddling Ventura with a no-decision. It’s unclear where he’ll slot into the team’s rotation following the All-Star break.

The Royals activated outfielder Norichika Aoki from the disabled list Friday, after his recovery from a groin injury.

Chen will take Jason Vargas' spot in the rotation. Vargas will miss the start after having an appendectomy. Chen started four games with the club this season, but was transitioned into a long-relief role recently. He has a 7.11 ERA over 25 1/3 innings.

Shields (9-4) took it to his former team Monday, posting his first quality start since June 15 and his first double-digit-strikeout outing since April 17. Though he struggled through an uneven June, Shields owns a 3.71 ERA and 102:27 K:BB ratio in 123 2/3 innings. He's scheduled to make his last pre-break start Saturday against the Tigers.
