News
Royals pitcher Chris Young allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings of work in Kansas City's 4-2 loss to the Yankees on Wednesday.

Young had issues starting in the second inning when he allowed a solo home run to Brian McCann to lead things off. Then in the third, Young served up an 0-1 pitch to Alex Rodriguez, who blasted a three-run home run over the left field wall.

"It wasn't executed," Young said to MLB.com. "It was the right pitch selection, just not executed. That will happen.

"It's baseball. Some days that's a ground ball or it's taken. I'm not going to read too much into it. So be it."

Young, who also struck out seven with two walks, moved his record to 4-1 in defeat. Young, who now owns a 1.49 ERA, will look to bounce back on Wednesday against the Indians.

Royals right fielder Paulo Orlando hit his first career home run in Tuesday's loss to the Yankees.

"I got pretty good contact and right field is pretty short here," he said. "The first one you never forget. And to be at Yankee Stadium, too."

Orlando's solo shot in the sixth was the Royals' only run of the game. Orlando went 1 for 3 and drove in his seventh run of the year.

News
Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura allowed four runs on five hits in seven innings of work in Kansas City's 6-1 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.

Ventura had issues in the first inning when he issued two consecutive walks to open the game. Then, Jhonny Peralta singled to bring home a run before Matt Adams doubled to center to plate another.

"He was just missing. There were some pitches I thought could go either way that resulted in walks," manager Ned Yost said to MLB.com. "The one bad pitch he made all day was he pulled a changeup to [Matt] Carpenter up and in, and he hit it down the line [for a homer].

"After that first inning, I thought he threw the ball awesome."

Ventura had more problems in the sixth when he allowed a two-run homer to Matt Carpenter. Ventura, now 3-4, moved his ERA to 4.64 in 54 1/3 innings of work.

He will look to get back on track on Saturday against the Cubs.

News
Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie took the loss on Monday, allowing 11 earned runs on nine hits and three walks in one-plus innings in his team's 14-1 loss to the Yankees.

Guthrie (4-3) hadn't given up more than two runs in any of his last three starts, but he could not keep runners off base or the ball in the park in the first inning, with eight runs scoring on a trio of home runs. He opened the second inning by putting two more guys on base before serving up his fourth home run of the game, which ended his day with just three outs recorded.

"I'm sure it was more than just command, but that was a part of it," Guthrie said to MLB.com. "Most of the damage they did was a credit to them. I don't know if they were good pitches, but they were executed [the way we planned them]."

Guthrie owns a 6.70 ERA and 19:16 K:BB ratio in 48 1/3 innings. He's slated to face the Cubs in Chicago on Sunday.

"For him to send me out [in the second inning] is a gesture of faith on his part," Guthrie said. "The game is probably over at that point, but he believes I can go out there and get more outs. But I wasn't able to do that or get deeper into the game."

News
Royals starter Jason Vargas snapped a personal two-game winning streak with a loss Tuesday against the Yankees.

Vargas dropped to 3-2 after allowing two runs on four hits in four innings. He walked one, struck out six and allowed a home run.

"I thought coming back off the DL, he was pretty down sharp," manager Ned Yost said. "He made one pitch, tried to go down and away to Teixeira (on the home run), and it came back middle-middle. But six punchouts, pretty darn good. Came back in good fashion."

His next start is Tuesday, against Cleveland.

Butera's last start came on May 14 and he's seen just two plate appearances since then. He has two hits in eight at-bats with the Royals.

Second baseman Omar Infante is the only Royals starter with experience against Yankees pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, with two hits in three at-bats.
