News
The Royals placed closer Greg Holland on the 15-day disabled list with a right pectoral strain. In a corresponding move, the club recalled right-hander Yohan Pino from Triple-A Omaha, per the team's official website.

The team did not reveal when Holland sustained the injury, although the right-hander notched his fourth save of the season on Friday. Holland said he is unable to help the club if he can't throw in multiple days, per FOX Sports Kansas City.

"I'm in a situation where I can't do that right now," Holland said.

He began the season without allowing a run over four innings of relief. He converted all four save chances and held a 0.25 WHIP and a 3:1 K:BB ratio over that span. Wade Davis will take over as the team's closer, per MLB.com.

News
Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez enjoyed a "fantastic" outing, according to manager Ned Yost, but the right-hander told reporters he regretted one of pitches he made to the Twins on Wednesday, per MLB.com.

"Everything was good all night," Volquez said. "I was throwing a lot of strikes. The whole game I threw well -- just one bad pitch."

Oswaldo Arcia crushed a 2-1 fastball off Volquez for a two-run home run, which proved to be the difference in a 3-1 defeat to Minnesota. Volquez shook off catcher Salvador Perez, which led to Arcia's pivotal home run.

"Salvy called a changeup, I threw a fastball that came back over the middle of the plate," Volquez said. "Salvy wanted a changeup down and away. I was just trying to come in and didn't get it in."

The Royals recalled infielder Orlando Calixte and optioned outfielder Reymond Fuentes down to Triple-A Omaha, per the Kansas City Star. Calixte began the minor-league season with a .154 batting average (4 for 26) with two walks, three runs scored, a double, a home run and an RBI in seven games.

The move gives Kansas City infield depth after Alcides Escobar went down with a left knee sprain and contusion. Christian Colon got the start at shortstop in Escobar's place on Saturday.

News
Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura was ejected by umpire Jim Joyce in the fourth inning Saturday night for hitting Athletics third baseman Brett Lawrie with a pitch.

The benches emptied, but no punches were thrown and the players soon dispersed, according to Comcast SportsNet.

"He really just lost command most of the night," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He was all over the place."

Lawrie has been in the center of a controversy after a hard slide into second base Friday caused injury to Kansas City shortstop Alcides Escobar.

Ventura collapsed in the fourth after three no-hit innings. He had already given up five runs when he beaned Lawrie.

News
Sizzling outfielder Lorenzo Cain was a one-man wrecking crew for the Royals in Minnesota on Thursday. He was also one of the few offensive bright spots in a defeat.

Cain gave his team a brief lead in the first with a two-run homer, his second of this season after hitting just five all of last year. He singled and scored in the third, walked in the fifth and doubled in a run and scored in the ninth. He even added a stolen base for good measure.

When the smoke cleared, Cain owned a ridiculous slash line of .429/.512/.714 with two home runs and 10 RBI.

Gordon, who underwent wrist surgery in December, is off to a slow start this season, hitting .150 (3 for 20) with three walks and three RBI in six games. He is a career .252 hitter against left-handers. Paulo Orlando got the start in his place and will hit in the No. 7 spot.

Royals catcher Salvador Perez didn't get the day off Thursday against the Twins, but may receive one over the weekend, manager Ned Yost told reporters, per the Kansas City Star.

Perez is off to a fast start, hitting .364/.382/.667 with a double, three homers, nine RBI, a stolen base and a walk over his first 33 at-bats. When Perez does receive a day of rest, Yost will likely give Erik Kratz a start. Kratz has yet to receive an at-bat this season.

All was well for Royals starter Jason Vargas after one inning Thursday at Minnesota. Unfortunately for him, baseball games are nine innings - and he did not make it past the fourth.

Vargas gave up five runs (four earned) on six runs on 10 hits in the second, third and fourth combined before his removal and finished the day with a 1-1 record.

It all began going downhill when Twins designated hitter and namesake Kennys Vargas slammed a pitch off the facade of the second deck in the second inning. The Royals pitcher fell apart from there. He gave up four consecutive singles to start the fourth.

Vargas saw his ERA double to 6.00, but he can lower it when he faces the Twins again next Tuesday.
