Royals outfielder Alex Rios is back in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs.

Rios jammed his thumb Wednesday, and while he said Friday that the thumb had improved, he expects to have to manage the injury all season. The outfielder also dealt with the same injury in 2014.

Rios has hit .333/.349/.619 with three home runs in 42 spring at-bats.

News
Royals pitcher Danny Duffy gave up four runs in five innings of work with seven strikeouts against the Diamondbacks Saturday. Duffy was dominant early on, striking out six in three scoreless innings. Duffy likes his progression through spring training, reports MLB.com.

"I feel like it's building perfectly," he said. "The ball has been popping for me. I feel the best I have in years [springs]. I got a little fastball happy [today]. I tried to double-up with fastballs to Pollock and Goldschmidt and it hurt me. You get happy you throw one by them, and then the next thing you leave one over the plate."

Manager Ned Yost was so-so about the outing.

"He was OK," Yost said. "He had a very good first three innings and then just started getting the ball up a little. The slider he threw to Pollock for the homer wasn't a real sharp slider."

News
Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez surrendered an opening-inning home run, but settled down to throw eight strikeouts over five innings Sunday against the Cubs. Manager Ned Yost was happy to finally see why the team signed him this offseason, reports MLB.com.

"I don't see him struggling," Yost said before the game. "The importance I place on Spring Training performance and the importance you place on Spring Training performance are two different things. I'm looking for him to gain arm strength and I'm looking for him to refine his mechanics where he's down [in the strike zone] consistently. To me, he's right on schedule."

Volquez allowed two runs on six hits, making his ERA now 7.79.

News
Royals manager Ned Yost said there was a "high probability" that pitcher Franklin Morales will make the team's Opening Day roster, per the Kansas City Star

Morales was signed as a free agent on February 19. He went 2-0 this spring with a 7.20 ERA. Yost said that Morales still needs to be added to the team's 40-man roster.

News
Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain isn't considered a power hitter by any means. Cain has never hit more than seven home runs in any of his five seasons, but manager Ned Yost thinks he's capable of more, reports MLB.com.

"I think that would be a good bet," Yost said. "… I think he's capable of hitting 15. I really do. He's got a lot of power. You watch him in [batting practice] and he'll hit some vicious line drives as well as hitting the ball out of the park."

Yost just wants to see Cain add the power to become a more complete hitter in 2015.

"He's a more complete hitter than he ever has been," Yost said. "I thought there was a point in time where he could hit 20 in a year. But that would take away from who he is."

News
Royals manager Ned Yost said Monday he's not concerned with the slow spring start of outfielder Alex Gordon, MLB.com reports.

"He's still getting his timing down," Yost said. "He'll be fine. The big thing is he's not hurting. He's sore a little sometimes, but generally OK."

Gordon is working his way back from December surgery on his right wrist. He's a candidate to receive at least a few off-days during the first month of the season in order to give the wrist time to properly recover.

"We'll have to go day to day with him and see how he feels," Yost said. "We do have two off-days the first two weeks. And we'll just see after that. I know one day he came in real sore recently and I thought about banging him [from the lineup] but he went to the cage and it loosened up, and we put him in. It's been kind of like that."

Gordon is just 3 for 24 this spring.

News
Royals pitcher Brian Flynn will have a tough time making the Major League roster, according to a report by the Kansas City Star.

Flynn had a 1.50 ERA in nine games this spring, and manager Ned Yost said he was one of the best pitchers in camp. However, the Royals would risk losing either Ryan Madson or Louis Coleman if they sent either of those pitchers down. Flynn still has options available.
