The Royals will have to make a decision soon on what they will do with their backup catcher role, according to MLB.com.

Erik Kratz was pegged as the team's second catcher, even after the team acquired Drew Butera from the Angels. With Kratz currently on the DL, Butera has done well in his place, posting a .218 average with four runs scored this season. Manager Ned Yost will answer when he has Kratz available.

"I'm not going to answer those questions until Kratzie comes off the rehab," Yost said. "We'll make a determination then and do it like we always do. We'll get together as an organization and plot it out.

"Right now, we got two really good options and we have to decide the best option."

Yost really likes the defense Kratz brings to the plate.

"Butera's defense is really good. Kratzie's offensive capabilities, mostly his power, is very, very good," Yost said. "Butera's offense is good and he understands situations to do what you want your backup catcher to do -- he can bunt, go the other way, move runners. You got a runner on third base and [Butera] will find a way to get him in."

Shoulder, biceps - 15-day DL. Out until at least early June (Updated - 5/25/15)
News
The Royals announced Monday that they have placed starter Danny Duffy on the 15-day disabled list with left biceps tendinitis and recalled Brandon Finnegan to take his spot on the roster.

Duffy's move was retroactive to May 17, meaning he can come off the disabled list on June 1. Duffy complained of shoulder stiffness on Friday and he was scratched from his Saturday start and pushed to Tuesday. He isn't surprised by the move after having a cortisone shot in his shoulder on Friday, MLB.com reports.

"It takes time for it to work," Duffy said. "It's only been 48-72 hours. I can see why they [put me on the DL] -- it makes more sense to have a functioning arm here."

With Duffy headed to the DL, Jason Vargas will start Tuesday's game against the Yankees.

Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez allowed two runs on four hits in six innings of work in Kansas City's 3-2 win over the Cardinals on Saturday in a rain-shortened game.

Volquez loaded the bases in the second inning when he walked back-to-back hitters. Then, Yadier Molina picked up an RBI on a groundout to third base. In the fifth, Volquez allowed three consecutive singles, leading to another run.

"I was kind of hurrying my throws a little bit," Volquez said to FOXSports.com. "I knew the rain was coming. I was trying to get past the fifth inning. I did it, too."

Volquez, now 4-3, moved his ERA to 2.77 in 55 1/3 innings of work. He will look to keep things rolling Friday against the Cubs.

News
Royals veteran pitcher Chris Young turned in another outstanding performance Friday against the Cardinals, improving to 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA in four starts this season.

Young still could head back to the bullpen once Jason Vargas returns from an elbow injury, but manager Ned Yost said it's too early to make any decisions or assumptions

"I'm not even going there," Yost said, per MLB.com. "Nice try, though. When we get to the point where we have to make a decision, we'll do it like we always do. We'll sit down with the coaches, with [general manager] Dayton [Moore] and do what's right."

Young seems fine with whatever role the Royals ask of him.

"It doesn't matter to me," he said. "One thing the bullpen taught me is to make one good pitch at a time, take care of one batter at a time. The numbers all even out through time. I'm not worried or concerned about that. I just like the element of competition of being out there."

Morales drove in all five the team's runs Friday. He did it by hitting two home runs off Lance Lynn. Morales went 3 for 5 in the game to raise his average to .305.

Prior to his three-hit game Friday, Morales had been hitting .154 with no home runs over his last four games.

Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura allowed four runs on five hits in seven innings of work in Kansas City's 6-1 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.

Ventura had issues in the first inning when he issued two consecutive walks to open the game. Then, Jhonny Peralta singled to bring home a run before Matt Adams doubled to center to plate another.

"He was just missing. There were some pitches I thought could go either way that resulted in walks," manager Ned Yost said to MLB.com. "The one bad pitch he made all day was he pulled a changeup to [Matt] Carpenter up and in, and he hit it down the line [for a homer].

"After that first inning, I thought he threw the ball awesome."

Ventura had more problems in the sixth when he allowed a two-run homer to Matt Carpenter. Ventura, now 3-4, moved his ERA to 4.64 in 54 1/3 innings of work.

He will look to get back on track on Saturday against the Cubs.

Royals catcher Salvador Perez has been playing through an apparent leg injury for some time, manager Ned Yost said on Sunday per FOX Sports Kansas City.

Yost called it a slight groin injury, while Perez described it as a tight left hamstring. He was given the final inning of Sunday's game off as a precaution. He went 1 for 3 with an RBI in the game and is now hitting .306 with 24 RBI on the season.

Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie took the loss on Monday, allowing 11 earned runs on nine hits and three walks in one-plus innings in his team's 14-1 loss to the Yankees.

Guthrie (4-3) hadn't given up more than two runs in any of his last three starts, but he could not keep runners off base or the ball in the park in the first inning, with eight runs scoring on a trio of home runs. He opened the second inning by putting two more guys on base before serving up his fourth home run of the game, which ended his day with just three outs recorded.

"I'm sure it was more than just command, but that was a part of it," Guthrie said to MLB.com. "Most of the damage they did was a credit to them. I don't know if they were good pitches, but they were executed [the way we planned them]."

Guthrie owns a 6.70 ERA and 19:16 K:BB ratio in 48 1/3 innings. He's slated to face the Cubs in Chicago on Sunday.

"For him to send me out [in the second inning] is a gesture of faith on his part," Guthrie said. "The game is probably over at that point, but he believes I can go out there and get more outs. But I wasn't able to do that or get deeper into the game."
