News
Red Sox pitcher Rubby De La Rosa has been scratched from Tuesday's start with a tweaked muscle in his side, according to the Providence Journal's Brian MacPherson.

The move is being called precautionary, so it doesn't appear to be too serious. De La Rosa has a 3.65 ERA in 24 2/3 innings in Triple-A this season. Chris Hernandez will start in his place.

Calf - Questionable for May 27 start at N.Y. Mets (Updated - 5/22/13)
News
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he expects starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda to make his next start Tuesday against the Mets after the right-hander left his start Wednesday against the Orioles with a bruised right calf.

"I would be shocked if he couldn’t make his next start,’’ Girardi said, per the New York Post.

Kuroda also seems confident he will be back on the hill Tuesday.

"It will depend on how it feels [Thursday], but for me I will make the next start,’’ Kuroda said.

News
Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw looked every bit like an ace on Monday in Milwaukee.

Kershaw pitched a complete-game victory to improve to 5-2 on the year.

Kershaw gave up just an RBI ground out in the third inning for the only run he allowed. He gave up three hits and a walk over his nine innings, throwing 107 pitches. Kershaw struck out five batters and lowered his ERA to 1.35.

Kershaw, 25, has picked up consecutive wins with one run allowed over 17 2/3 innings with 16 Ks over that span. He hasn't lost since falling to 2-2 on April 17 against San Diego. Kershaw makes his next start Sunday against the Cardinals.

News
Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier was not in the lineup Wednesday against the Brewers after manager Don Mattingly hinted that he was only going to field a team "that's going to fight and compete the whole day." After Wednesday's game, Ethier explained to the Los Angeles Times that he was not happy with that characterization of his play.

"I take offense to that," Ethier said.

Specifically, Ethier was unhappy that Mattingly did not say anything to him personally about the perceived issue with his work ethic.

"But other than that, it's one where I feel like every day I show up and I'm trying to figure out ways to compete," Ethier said. "I work hard. Whether I'm going good or going bad, I work just as hard, both sides. Obviously, when things are going bad, I'm trying even harder to figure out how to make things go right."

Ethier is batting .264 with a .758 on-base percentage, both career lows.

News
Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp singled twice in a win Wednesday over Milwaukee.

Kemp finished 2 for 4 with a walk, run scored, RBI and stolen base. Kemp now has a four-game hitting streak -- something typically commonplace for the two-time All-Star, but he'll take any positive developments given his performance this year. His line sits at a pedestrian .270/.319/.356.

News
Colleague Al Melchior's interpretation of Dodgers manager Don Mattingly's comments Tuesday about not wanting to anoint a closer? "It's Jansen."

That's what he said in between segments on Wednesday's Fantasy Baseball Today -- referring, of course, to Kenley Jansen -- and I can't disagree.

If Mattingly is declaring an open competition for the role, which is how I read it, then Jansen shouldn't have much trouble delivering the decisive blow to Brandon League. His meltdowns over the weekend have created some suspense, but in the end, he'll prove to be the more effective reliever.

And if his performance as a closer last year counts for anything, he might end up being a top-five reliever the rest of the way.
