For the second straight game, Marlins first baseman Michael Morse will be out of the starting lineup. Morse will be on the bench for Friday's game against the Orioles, while Justin Bour gets another start at first.

News
Could the Marlins have rushed right-hander Henderson Alvarez back from the disabled list? Alvarez returned from the DL last weekend after suffering elbow tightness and shoulder inflammation, and had a rough start on Saturday against the Braves. But the Marlins needed him to come back with fellow starter Jarred Cosart placed on the DL with a bout of vertigo.

CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports that Alvarez has apparently been pitching with a 90-percent torn UCL for years, but has been able to get by without needing surgery.

Last year, Alvarez made 30 starts for the Marlins, and finished with a very impressive 2.65 ERA. It is worth wondering if Alvarez was in fact ready to return from his DL stint, or if the return will have any long-term ramifications.

News
Marlins pitcher Dan Haren allowed two runs on five hits in eight innings of work in Miami's 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks on Monday in 13 innings, but did not factor into the decision.

Haren only blemish came in the fourth inning when with two men on, Yasmany Tomas blasted an RBI double to deep center field, scoring both runners. Haren settled in after that, totaling five strikeouts and no walks in his outing.

Haren, who remains 4-2, moved his ERA to 3.47 in 49 1/3 innings of work. He will look to get back on the winning side on Saturday against the Orioles.

Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez is on track to make his return to the rotation at some point between late June to mid-July, barring any setbacks, president of baseball operations Mike Hill told Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald on Tuesday.

Fernandez, who is just over 12 months removed from Tommy John surgery, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday. If he makes it through the sessions without any reported setbacks, he'll pitch two simulated games in the coming weeks, followed by an extended spring training appearance and a minor-league rehab assignment.

News
Marlins pitcher Tom Koehler's days in the rotation could be numbered. With youngster Jose Fernandez making his way back from Tommy John surgery, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports Koehler could be moved to the bullpen when Fernandez returns, which is likely a month or two away.

Heyman notes that Koehler is seen by some as a possible future closer, with one scout saying "he has the stuff to do it". The Marlins' troubles with the back-end of their bullpen have been well-documented, so if Koehler can in fact fill that role, it would be a welcomed relief for the club.

Marlins starting pitcher Mat Latos was in position Thursday against the Diamondbacks to pick up his second win of the season before running into trouble late in his start. Latos settled for a no-decision, as he allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Latos, who struck out seven, gave up a run in the first inning on Yasmany Tomas' two-out RBI double. However, he entered the second inning with a 3-1 lead as Miami surged ahead in the bottom of the first.

Latos gave up another two-out RBI hit in the second inning, as this time Ender Inciarte plated a run on a single. Latos would then throw three scoreless innings before running into trouble in the sixth inning.

Pitching with a 4-2 lead, Latos put the first two runners on base via a single and walk. They moved up to second and third when Chris Owings reached on a fielder's choice. Jordan Pacheco then had a sac fly to center before Latos was chased from the game on Cliff Pennington's one-out RBI double. Owings and Pennington would later score, charging all four runs in the inning to Latos.

The Marlins would tie the game at 6 in the bottom of the sixth, taking Latos off the hook for the loss. The right-hander has allowed 11 runs in his last two starts (8 1/3 innings).

His next scheduled start is for Tuesday at Pittsburgh.
