A.J. Ramos continued to take the closer job with the Marlins and run with it Friday. He allowed a single to Chris Coghlan to start the ninth against the Cubs, but retired the next three batters in order to register his 13th save.

Ramos has not given up a run in his last nine appearances. He has yielded just two hits during that stretch.

News
Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez had a solid outing in his season-debut during Thursday afternoon's 5-4 win over the Giants.

But it wasn't his pitching that stole the show at Marlins Park. In the fifth inning, Fernandez crushed a deep shot out of the ballpark for a solo homer. The Marlins fans in attendance were ecstatic at Fernandez's feat at the plate.

On the mound, Fernandez allowed three earned runs on seven hits in six innings pitched. Fernandez didn't allow any walks and struck out six batters. Fernandez was activated from the 60-day disabled list on Thursday after a long recovery from Tommy John surgery.

"A big day, obviously, with Jose coming back," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said, per MLB.com. "A welcome addition after all the work and rehab that he did for this past 14 months. To have him come back, and the energy that he brings inside our clubhouse and when he's on the mound, certainly, inside the ballpark as well."

His season begins with a 4.50 ERA.

News
The National League starters for the All-Star Game were announced Sunday, and leading the way after an impressive first half is Nationals slugger Bryce Harper, who racked up nearly 14 million votes to pace the field.

Harper entered Sunday's game with a .344 average, 25 home runs and 60 RBIs, numbers that have him squarely in the conversation for the Triple Crown. He'll be joined in Cincinnati by players from an array of teams, unlike the AL's Royals-heavy squad.

Catcher: Buster Posey, Giants
First baseman: Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks
Second baseman: Dee Gordon, Marlins
Third baseman: Todd Frazier, Reds
Shortstop: Jhonny Peralta, Cardinals
Outfield: Bryce Harper, Nationals
Outfield: Matt Holliday, Cardinals
Outfield: Giancarlo Stanton, Marlins

News
Marlins right-hander Jarred Cosart might remember his outing Saturday at Wrigley Field for quite some time - and for all the wrong reasons.

His first start since returning from a hand injury was a disaster. He was mashed for seven earned runs on four hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings before his merciful removal. When the dust had cleared, his ERA had soared to a season-high 5.36.

And after the game, he was demoted to Triple-A New Orleans.

"We're going to ... let him work on some things that he needs to refine to get himself back to being the Jarred Cosart that we know he is - both mentally and physically - and get him right so he can come back here and use his pitches," Dan Jennings told MLB.com.

Cosart allowed a two-run homer to Kris Bryant in the first inning Saturday and never recovered. Two walks and two singles in the third led to a grand slam by Bryant and knocked him out of the game.

He has allowed 20 earned runs in his last 20 innings pitched.

News
Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich got his team off on the right foot Friday against the Cubs. He didn't do much else - though neither did most hitters in a 2-1 Miami win.

Yelich slammed his fifth home run in the first inning to remain on a roll. It gave him 10 hits in his last 15 at-bats before he went hitless in his last three plate appearances. He now owns a respectable slash line of .253/.331/.364.

The home run tear of Marlins first baseman Justin Bour continued Friday against the host Cubs. He blasted one in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and give his team a victory.

Bour has gone yard once in each of the last four games to give him 10 on the season. Five of his last seven hits have gone the distance.

"To homer in any park is cool," said Bour, per MLB.com. "But it is very nice that it came at an opportunity to help us win the game."

He was the only player in the game, however, to total two hits.

The only thing Marlins starting pitcher Mat Latos didn't do on Sunday against the Cubs was get a win.

Latos was very impressive over seven innings as he allowed just one hit and one earned run. He gave up a run when he threw a wild pitch in the first inning. After that, he went on to throw six scoreless frames.

Despite the dominant showing, latos picked up his sixth loss of the season. He holds a 4.90 ERA with 67 strikeouts and 24 walks in 75 1/3 innings this year.
