News
Twins starting pitcher Kyle Gibson struck out six batters Saturday at Baltimore, which is the fourth time in his last seven starts he had at least five strikeouts. He accomplished that feat just twice in his first 19 appearances.

Gibson's strikeout rate has increased to 7.34 K/9 over his last seven starts.

"Having more consistency to my release point and the shape of my pitches was something that added to that tonight," Gibson said Saturday, per the Pioneer Press. "I’ve been really working on staying on line, and what that does is it allows all the pitches to come out of my hand on relatively the same trajectory toward home plate and the same arm slot. When you can do that, it takes the hitter a little bit longer to be able to recognize that."

Twins closer Glen Perkins gave up a solo home run Monday but still recorded his 33rd save in his team's 6-4 win over the Orioles.

Perkins didn't allow any baserunners aside from the home run, and he didn't strike out any batters. The home run was only the fourth one he has surrendered this season, but two of those four have come his in his last three appearances. Perkins owns a 2.83 ERA and 65:9 K:BB ratio in 57 1/3 innings.

News
Twins pitcher Phil Hughes picked up a win Monday, giving up three unearned runs on five hits in eight innings and striking out five in his team's 6-4 victory over the Orioles.

Hughes (15-9) served up a three-run home run with two outs in the seventh after an error had been committed earlier in the inning. The pitcher ended a string of quality starts in his last outing but bounced back nicely on Labor Day. Hughes owns a 3.54 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 157:15 K:BB ratio in 180 2/3 innings. Since 1900, only two pitchers have qualified for the ERA title while posting a K:BB ratio of 10.0 or better (Bret Saberhagen, 1994; Cliff Lee, 2010). Hughes will look to remain on track to join that group when he faces the Angels Saturday.
