Twins pitcher Ricky Nolasco allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks in six innings while striking out three in his team's 6-5 win over the Orioles Sunday.

Nolasco served up back-to-back home runs in the first inning but was able to settle down after, giving up just an unearned run over the last five innings of work.

"I kind of picked the wrong day to give up fly balls," Nolasco said after the outing, per MLB.com. "I'd been getting ground balls all spring, but gave up some fly balls today with the wind blowing. I just tried to limit the damage from there and get my work in."

Nolasco was able to retire 10 batters in a row during his best stretch of the game. He has posted a 4.12 ERA and 16:5 K:BB ratio in 19 2/3 spring innings.

News
Twins pitcher Mike Pelfrey threw one scoreless inning Sunday, sending the Orioles down in order. Pelfrey, who made his frustrations about the transition known, settled down a bit and felt somewhat comfortable in the appearance, reports MLB.com.

"It was good," Pelfrey said. "At the end of the day, I have a lot of respect for him. I got a lot of things off my chest, and he got a lot off his. So it was a very good discussion. Obviously, my emotions probably got the best of me yesterday. So I told him I'm going to be professional and go to the 'pen and give it everything I have."

He has made just four appearances out of the bullpen in his career compared to 183 starts.

"I wanted to see how fast I could do it, and it was surprising to me I only needed those 10-12 pitches," Pelfrey said. "So that was pretty good. I think the hardest part was playing catch before the game and then waiting around and doing it again."

News
Twins starting pitcher Tommy Milone allowed one earned run on four hits and two walks in six innings while striking out five in his team's 3-1 win over the Yankees Tuesday.

"Tommy did well," manager Paul Molitor said after the outing, per MLB.com. "He kind of minimized damage when he did have a little bit of difficulty. When he missed, he didn't miss by much. He was around the plate all day with all of his pitches."

Milone was named the No. 5 starter Sunday and delivered a fine performance a few days later.

"It was a success personally, especially coming off last year when I didn't do well at all coming over here," Milone said. "It's kind of nice to have success here and show them that I am the pitcher they traded for. But the job is not over. I have to keep it up."

Milone has posted a 3.60 ERA and 13:6 K:BB ratio in 20 innings this spring.

News
Twins catcher/first baseman Joe Mauer has put in extra time this spring working with hitting instructor Tom Brunansky, in the hopes of improving his power to right field.

"I know he's been spending time with Tom working on that," manager Paul Molitor said, per MLB.com. "Whether it's a runner on first and trying to pull the ball hard, or getting into counts and then turning it loose. I know he's added a little more confidence in that swing. He can keep people more honest by doing things at different times, but at the same time not making drastic changes to who he is."

Maurer is hitting .229 with a home run and five RBI this spring.

Twins starting pitcher Phil Hughes went four innings in his final spring start Wednesday against the Red Sox. He allowed one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out five.

"I felt good for the most part," Hughes said after the outing, per MLB.com. "I felt like my stuff was all right. I was locating pretty well, especially as it went along farther. So it's a nice way to end things and get ready for Detroit."

Hughes finishes the spring with a 2-0 record and 5.28 ERA in five starts. Hughes is scheduled to make his first regular season start in Monday's season opener against the Tigers. Hughes went 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA in two starts against the Tigers last season.

News
Twins pitcher Brian Duensing struggled through his start Monday against the Red Sox, allowing six runs on eight hits in just one inning of work.

It was Duensing's first true rough start of spring training, after allowing just one run in his last seven appearances.

'"He couldn't make pitches, he got behind. But he's had a good spring overall. Things kind of snowballed on him," manager Paul Molitor said to the Star Tribune. "We just couldn't get him through that inning. I'm willing to let that go by. Obviously, you don't want to see that for anybody, but he’ll be back out there."
