News
Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson picked up his first win of the season Wednesday, giving up one earned run on  nine hits in 6 2/3 innings while striking out three and walking none in his team's 3-1 victory over the Royals.

Despite surrendering nine hits, Gibson (1-1) didn't allow an extra-base hit in the game, and the Royals were only able to eek out a run in the fourth inning before the starter departed.

"If I can limit `em to singles and allow the defense to do some work behind me, that's going to be big for me," Gibson said after the game, per the Associated Press.

He takes a 6.10 ERA and 3:5 K:BB ratio into Monday's rematch with the Royals.

Twins starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey is off to a slow start in 2015 and general manager Terry Ryan said he expects better from his right hander, reports the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

"He can do better. We expect him to do better," Ryan said. "I wasn't worried about his pace. I was worried about him putting away hitters."

In two starts this season, Pelrey has allowed five earned runs in 10 innings (4.50 ERA) with four strike outs and five walks.

News
It wasn't pretty. In fact, it was pretty ugly. But Twins left-hander Tommy Milone did emerge with a 2-0 record Thursday after beating visiting Kansas City.

Milone was the beneficiary of a rare explosion from an offense that ranked last in the majors in batting average heading in. He yielded three earned runs on seven hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings, fanning three along the way.

His main culprit was Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain, who slammed a two-run homer in the first inning and added a single and walk against him

Milone, who now boasts a strong 2.08 ERA, will try to remain unbeaten next Tuesday in a rematch with Kansas City, this time on the road.

Twins reliever Blaine Boyer is off to a poor start in 2015 (15.00 ERA in four appearances) but said he's identified the issue and has rectified it, per TwinCities.com.

"It was a timing issue I've been dealing with ever since the season started," Boyer said. "I was taking way too much time to get all my weight to my back leg. Everything was rushing. I had nothing behind the ball."

Boyer hasn't pitched since April 12 when he gave up three runs on four hits to the White Sox without recording an out.

Twins first baseman Kennys Vargas didn't just hit a home run Thursday against Kansas City. He sent a missile off the facade of the second deck.

The baseball left the yard in quite a hurry and tied a game Minnesota eventually won. The homer gave his team momentum, but it also opened a few eyes.

"It was fast, yeah," Vargas told ESPN about the speed in which the ball rocketed out. "The first base coach, he told me, like, 'Wow! I've never seen that.'"

Vargas added a single to raise his batting average to .250 on the year.
