News
The Yankees have opted to give struggling veteran pitcher CC Sabathia a few more days off before his next start. Manager Joe Girardi announced Friday that Sabathia will be pushed back to Wednesday against the Athletics.

Sabathia was originally scheduled to start Sunday against the Rays. Ivan Nova will start Sunday for New York.

"It's up to them," Sabathia said, per The Journal News. "Whatever they think is best is the schedule that I'm following. It is what it is."

Alex Rodriguez provided the only bit of offense for the Yankees in an 8-1 loss to the Rays on Sunday, blasting his 16th home run of the season to put New York on the scoreboard.

Rodriguez connected off Rays starter Erasmo Ramirez in the sixth inning, a shot to left-center that now gives him 670 career home runs. It was his first longball since June 23.

Rodriguez now has 47 RBIs on the season.

Yankees starter Michael Pineda pitched seven shutout innings and left with a two-run lead. The bullpen couldn't close the game, however, and Pineda was left with a no-decision on Saturday.

Pineda had his longest shutout stretch since May 5 and struck out 10, the most he's recorded in a game since May 10. He allowed five hits and walked one.

Pineda hasn't allowed more than two walks in a game all season.

"His slider was good, his changeup was really good and I thought his fastball was extremely effective," manager Joe Girardi said, per MLB.com. "I thought he located well."

News
Yankees starter Ivan Nova had his toughest outing since returning from Tommy John surgery, lasting just five innings while allowing four runs in a loss to the Rays on Sunday.

Nova was wild on the day, walking three batters and giving up six hits on the day. In addition, he made a throwing error on a bunt, allowing a run to score from third base.

Nova has not gotten much run support in back-to-back losses, but he only struck out one batter Sunday after whiffing seven in his last start.

Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka showed improvement in his outing on Friday, but still took a no-decision in the extra-innings victory over the Rays. Tanaka allowed three runs on six hits over six innings, walking one and striking out five.

Tanaka, whose ERA rose to 3.94, gave up two runs in the first inning to put his team down early. But the Yankees' offense was able to rally back late in the game to get Tanaka off the hook.

Tanaka had allowed 11 earned runs over his last two starts, so Friday was certainly a step in the right direction. Since returning from the disabled list on June 3, Tanaka has a 4.37 ERA in 37 innings pitched.

Yankees relief pitcher Andrew Miller might be able to return to the club after just one rehab appearance, per the New York Post.

Miller will pitch for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday, and could possibly come off the 15-day disabled list and rejoin the team after that.

“We will see where he is at. The thing is we don’t have to build him up [like a starter.] We have him throwing 25 pitches [Monday],’’ manager Joe Girardi said. “We will see how he feels. If he feels good we have to make a decision.’’
