The Yankees begin a stretch on Friday of 30 games in 31 days, so manager Joe Girardi said the team is considering adding a sixth starter to the rotation, reports MLB.com.

"I wouldn't really call it a six-man rotation. I'd call it more of inserting a sixth man one time through, and my guess is you might see it," Girardi said. "Weather could play a role, so you just have to wait and see, but it's something that's in the back of our minds. We've kind of prepared ourselves for it."

Pitchers Bryan Mitchell , Esmil Rogers and Chase Whitley are among the candidates to fill the potentional sixth-man spot.

Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius isn't hiding from the fact he is off to a slow start, batting .172 (5 for 29) through nine games.

“It’s started slow, I’m not going to lie,” Gregorius said, per The Journal News. “Everybody can see that. But it’s a couple of games in, hopefully I can pick it up and get better when I go out there. … The Yankees gave me the opportunity to be here, and for me it’s just amazing to follow in (Derek Jeter’s) footsteps. I’m trying to get better every day I go out there, making a lot of adjustments and everything and be the best I can be whenever I go out there.”

Manager Joe Girardi is also stressing patience as Gregorius replaces a Yankees legend.

“Let’s not forget that (Gregorius) is 25,” Girardi said. “There’s an adjustment period for a lot of people when they come to New York. It’s not the easiest position to handle either. He’s, in a sense, the captain of an infield and in charge. He has a lot of responsibilities. It’s been a week, too, and that’s why I don’t make too much of it.”

After taking a full batting-practice session Friday, Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner said his bruised wrist is feeling better and he did not rule playing Saturday, reports MLB.com.

"If I don't get a chance to play [Friday], hopefully [Saturday]," Gardner said. "I hit in the cage and it felt pretty good."

Gardner has been out since Monday with a bruised right wrist after he was hit by a pitch. Manager Joe Girardi said he wants to see Gardner take more batting practice before putting him back in the lineup.

"My inclination is to give him one more day, but I want to see [batting practice] first," Girardi said. "He did take some swings off the tee and said he felt pretty good."

After mulling when to start pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, Yankees manager Joe Girardi has decided to start Tanaka during Thursday's series finale at Detroit, reports MLB.com.

Thursday's game will Tanaka's first game starting on four days rest this season. He threw only 85 pitches during his last outing, which Girardi said allowed them to start him on short rest.

"He's going to have to pitch on his normal rest eventually," Girardi said, "so we just felt that because of the amount of pitches that he threw and how he looked, it's probably a good thing to do."

News
Yankees closer Andrew Miller saved his fourth game of the year in Sunday's win.

Miller pitched a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit and striking out three. He has not allowed a run this season and has given up two hits in six innings pitched.

"It's never easy. It's not how I wanted to start, but you have to look at the scoreboard in those situations," Miller said to MLB.com. "I know that there's nobody behind me, so I'm not trying to keep it to one run or no runs; I'm trying to win the game. Right there, it's about getting three outs before they get two runs. Fortunately I was able to do that. It wasn't pretty, but I got there."

Manager Joe Girardi continues to say both Miller and reliever Dellin Betances will be used interchangeably.

"We're seeing a ton of right-handed hitters and we're going to see a bunch again. It's kind of worked out that way," Girardi said. "I've asked them to get some multiple innings, some multiple outs for us. Andrew has done a good job in the ninth, so I've just kind of stuck with it right now. I'm not saying that's been named to anyone, but it's just kind of the way it has worked out with the lineup we have."
