The Yankees optioned pitcher Chase Whitley to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Thursday, to clear a roster spot for a callup.

Whitley has spent the last month pitching out of the Yankees bullpen, but has struggled in that role. He has allowed 10 runs over his last 7 1/3 innings, raising his season ERA to 5.43 overall.

News
Yankees closer David Robertson was hit with a loss Tuesday against the Astros.

Robertson entered with the game tied 4-4. Control issues sunk him during the inning. After getting one out, Robertson walked the next two batters. With two men on, he gave up a three-run blast to Chris Carter. Robertson gave up another walk and single during the inning, but kept those runners on base by recording the last two outs via the strikeout.

News
Yankees pitcher Chris Capuano had a tough start Tuesday against the Astros.

Capuano allowed four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked two. Capuano performed well early, but fell apart later in the contest. He allowed one run in the fifth before things collapsed in the sixth. Capuano led off the inning by giving up a single to Dexter Fowler. Fowler scored on a groundout. Capuano then proceeded to allow two straight singles. He was pulled from the game at that point. Both runs came around to score, and were charged to Capuano.

The Yankees battled back, giving Capuano a no-decision. He’ll take on the White Sox in his next start.

News
Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda tossed a strong start Wednesday against the Rays.

Pineda allowed two runs on four hits over six innings. He struck out three and walked one during the outing. Pineda was able to get through the first three innings without giving up a hit or a walk. That wasn’t the case in the fourth. Robbie Grossman started off the inning with a single. He advanced to second on a sac bunt. With two outs, Dexter Fowler hit a run-scoring double. Pineda was able to get through the rest of the inning without giving up any more runs. Pineda came out to start the seventh inning, but was pulled after issuing a walk. That run would come around to score, and was charged to Pineda. He threw 89 pitches.

The Astros managed to mount a comeback, giving him a no-decision. He’ll take on the Royals in his next start.

News
Yankees pitcher David Phelps will make his return to the club as a member of the bullpen, MLB.com reports Thursday.

Phelps, who is working his way back from a right elbow injury, is still in the process of beginning to throw. At this point, there is no timetable for his return to the team, but there is not enough time left in the season for him to rehab and return as a starter.

"I think at this stage, we're going day by day," Phelps said. "We'll hopefully amp it up when we get through this week. I took two weeks off, it's not like I'll be on the mound this weekend."

Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka will take another step forward this weekend, as he is set to face hitters in a live batting practice session Saturday, manager Joe Girardi announced.

Tanaka, who is working his way back from a partially torn UCL, will face hitters for the first time since suffering the injury. He has been working in bullpen sessions in recent weeks as part of his rehab, and the next step will likely be determined after he gets through Saturday's session.

Tanaka has been out since early July due to the injury, but remains hopeful he will be able to return to action this season.

News
Yankees catcher Brian McCann has found his power stroke over the last week, and he homered again in a 7-4 loss to the Astros Tuesday.

McCann got the Yankees on the board first with his fourth-inning home run, his third in five games. He finished the game 1 for 4 overall with two RBI in the loss.

McCann is still hitting just .235 for the season, but he has 14 home runs and 51 RBI in 105 games for the Yankees.

News
Brandon McCarthy has had a wild career, hasn't he? Between the minor-league accolades, the early struggles with the White Sox and Rangers, the eventual breakthrough with the Athletics, the career-threatening head injury and the disastrous stay in Arizona, nailing down just who he is has been an exercise in futility.

Which is why I don't mind just riding the wave with him.

The signs for what he's doing now where there even before joining the Yankees. He may have had a 3-10 record and 5.01 ERA in 18 starts with the Diamondbacks, but he also had a 3.82 FIP, which estimates what a pitcher's ERA really should be. And that FIP would have been even lower if not for a suspiciously high home run rate for a pitcher who induces as many ground balls as he does.

I'll admit I didn't put much stock in that argument at the time of the trade, believing McCarthy's FIP was inflated by a couple of high-strikeout games earlier in the season and that the home runs would only increase in Yankee Stadium. Instead, the strikeouts have become more frequent and the home runs less frequent.

It culminated with a complete-game shutout Thursday afternoon against the Astros, his fifth start in eight as a Yankee with seven or more strikeouts. Looks like the Athletics version of McCarthy is back.

Elbow - Questionable for Aug. 22 vs. Chicago White Sox (Updated - 8/21/14)
News
Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran is out of the lineup for the second day in a row Thursday against the Astros, as he continues to deal with an elbow injury.

Beltran was examined Wednesday, but the results of that are not yet known. He had a cortison injection in the elbow, his third of the season, and manager Joe Girardi told reporters Thursday he expects to know if Beltran will be available moving forward by Saturday.

The elbow began bothering him again in recent days, possibly as a result of his return to the outfield last week. He has just one hit in his last 28 at-bats.
