News
Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia isn't worried about how spring training has gone so far. The former Cy Young award winner doesn't care that his numbers, an 11.57 ERA in 4 2/3 innings, look so bad, reports the New York Daily News.

"I don't give a (expletive) what stock (people) put in it," Sabathia said. "It is what it is. I've had spring trainings where I've given up a lot of runs and went out and had a good season. I've had spring trainings like last year where I didn't give up no runs and I gave up five in the first game. Y'all can put stock in whatever you want. I'm not really worried about it."

Manager Joe Girardi expressed a similar mindset.

"The bottom line is that he's right Opening Day," Girardi said. "You try to evaluate his stuff and how you feel about that. What we've seen this year is much more positive than what we’ve seen the last, you know, in velocity, the discrepancy between that and the change up and slider, so now to me it's just ironing out and being more consistent."

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday infielder Jose Pirela wasn't going to make the Opening Day roster, despite a productive spring, per NJ.com. Pirela is sidelined after colliding with the outfield wall Sunday, but even if he was healthy, Cashman said it wouldn't have mattered.

Pirela is batting .370 (10 for 27) with two triples, three doubles, five RBI, three walks, four runs and six strikeouts in 15 spring games.

News
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday pitcher Adam Warren is the favorite to win the final spot in the team's rotation, per MLB.com. Cashman indicated Warren has a huge lead in the race over the remaining candidates -- Esmil Rogers, Bryan Mitchell, Chase Whitley and Scott Baker.

"There is a Secretariat in the field," Cashman said, per the New York Post. "Right now, Warren’s got a big lead in this, but we don’t have to make that decision right now. As of right now, if we made the call today, it would be Warren."

Warren is 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA through four spring starts. He has allowed four runs on 13 hits and no walks in 13 innings, while striking out six.

News
Yankees third baseman Chase Headley has played the fourth most innings on the field for the team with 78, but he has only had 13 chances at fielding balls, reports the New York Times. He is hoping that he gets more opportunities going forward.

“It’s crazy,” Headley said. “I’m begging for ground balls.”

Headley came over from the Padres last spring having spent his entire career there. He seemed to suffer the same circumstances there with limited chances to field balls. He spoke to some of his current teammates and his infield coach.

“I’ve talked with Joe Espada,” Headley said of the Yankees’ new infield coach. “And Didi and Stephen — I just want a routine, easy ground ball.”

Headley, who won a National League Gold Glove in 2012, has been using his practice time to stay sharp.

“Sometimes you’ll do a drill where the coach will flip the ball so you’re reading the swing and it’s a little bit more gamelike,” Headley said. “But there’s really no substitute for getting ground balls, and unfortunately that’s out of your control in spring training, so you do the best you can with it. The good thing is I’ve done it for a long time, so I’ll be fine.”

News
Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees hit his third home run of the spring in a 10-2 loss against the Orioles, according to MLB.com.

"That one felt good," Rodriguez said. "I was excited about that one."

The 39-year-old has had a successful spring, batting .306 with three home runs, one double and four RBI.

"Numbers mean nothing, but you definitely want to pass the eye test," Rodriguez said. "That means moving around better, putting balls in play, and hitting balls in the mid-90s. Those are things I haven't done in over a year and a half, so everything for me this year -- this spring, at least -- is a test."

Yankees manager Joe Girardi has been pleased with his at-bats this spring.

"He's been pretty consistent," Girardi said. "A home run today -- I think his at-bats have been really good."

Yankees pitcher Adam Warren, who is a favorite to land the fifth spot in the rotation, struck out five in a solid outing against the Rays on Thursday. Warren permitted one run on four hits and one walk in 3 2/3 innings of work. A solo home run by Evan Longoria in the second inning was Warren's only blemish of the afternoon.

Manager Joe Girardi told reporters he'll discuss who his No. 5 starter will be in the near future.

"We will meet soon, sit and talk about it," Girardi said, per the New York Post. "There are still some things we need to talk about."

Yankees infielder Stephen Drew went three for three on Friday, which is a significant bright spot in what's been a tough spring.

Prior to Friday's game, Drew only had six hits all spring. The 3-for-3 game boosted his average from .167 to .231.

"He's swung the bat better the last two weeks," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said, per MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. "The one thing you want is you want a lineup that there's pressure on the pitcher of the opposing team the entire time, and I feel that we have that type of lineup that we can do that, where so much pressure doesn't fall on a couple of guys."

News
Yankees relief pitcher Dellin Betances is still not quite right on the mound. Betances gave up another run Saturday, his fifth in seven appearances this spring.

"At the end of the day, you've got to try to prepare yourself," Betances said to MLB.com. "But I guess it's better to happen now in Spring Training where I can fix it before we leave and head up north. I'd rather it happen now than in season, when it's a little tougher there when the games count more."

Betances is working to fix his leg kick on the mound with pitching coach Larry Rothschild.

"It's not like I'm missing as bad as I once was," Betances said. "I'm around the zone. I felt way better even before I came in. I felt like my direction was better, something I'll try to work on more. As that gets better, I think I'll be able to throw more strikes and put guys away."
