If Major League Baseball arbitrator Fredric Horowitz decides that the Yankees must pay Alex Rodriguez for his historic 660th home run, then team owner Hal Steinbrenner won't dispute it, he told reporters on Wednesday, per NJ.com.

"I will say that, as with every other contract, if there's any contractual obligations on our end, we're going to meet them," Steinbrenner said to reporters. "It's no different than any other contract."

Rodriguez signed a signed a 10 year, $275 million contract with the Yankees in 2007 that contained marketing bonuses for reaching home run milestones. He's due to make $6 million each for reaching 660, 714, 755 and tying/breaking the all-time home run record at 762.

The embattled slugger tied Hall-of-Famer Willie Mays for fourth all-time in home runs, triggering his bonus on May 1. However, the Yankees believe they're not obligated to pay him because his home run chase is no longer commercially marketable due to his his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal, which led to his season-long suspension in 2014.

He is hitting .246/.346/.554 with 10 homers, 22 RBI, 19 walks and 36 strikeouts in 38 games played this season. He is 50 homers away from matching another Yankee, Babe Ruth, on the all-time list for third.

Yankees starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi lasted just 4 1/3 innings on Tuesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and fanning five in a no-decision against the Nationals.

Eovaldi surrendered first-inning homers to Ian Desmond and Bryce Harper.

Eovaldi couldn't make it through the fifth after giving up three RBI singles to the Nats.

"In the fifth inning, I just fell apart," Eovaldi said, per MLB.com. "Walking the leadoff batter after we put up four runs in the fourth, and two more in the fifth, it's just frustrating. I've got to be able to bear down, make better pitches than that and get back to the dugout.

Eovaldi returns to the mound for his next start Monday against the Royals.

News
Yankees right fielder Chris Young is batting third in Tuesday's matchup with the Nationals.

The Yankees are without typical No. 3 batter Alex Rodriguez as the team is losing the designated hitter in a National League park, so Young will bat third for the second time this season. He has hit .267/.330/.558 with six home runs and 12 RBI in 86 at-bats but has fared much better against lefties, hitting .382/.488/.824 with three home runs in 34 at-bats against southpaws.

The Yankees are underdogs (+130) in the nation's capital on Tuesday, per VegasInsider.com.

Yankees pitcher Ivan Nova is scheduled to make one more start in extended spring training on Saturday before the team decides on his rehab assignment, according to MLB.com.

Nova, who is currently on the 60-day DL with an elbow injury, has made progress in his rehab from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander threw 42 pitches in his previous extended spring training outing and his hoping to at least match that pitch total on Saturday.

Nova posted a 2-2 record with an 8.27 ERA in 20 2/3 innings in 2014.

The loss of Jacoby Ellsbury to a knee injury has the Yankees scrambling the top of their lineup for the Wednesday night game in Washington.

Brett Gardner is set to lead off for just the fourth time this season with Carlos Beltran batting in the second spot for only the second time in 2015.

Perhaps the move will jump-start Gardner, who followed a seven-game hitting streak with a 3-for-20 slide that has lowered his batting average under .300 for the first time since April 25.

Forearm - 15-day DL. On Triple-A rehab assignment (Updated - 5/21/15)
News
Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka made his first rehab start on Thursday. Tanaka, who has been on the disabled list with a forearm strain and wrist tendinitis since April 29, pitched three shutout innings for Triple-A Scranton. He allowed just two hits, struck out two and did not issue a walk. Of his 41 pitches, 25 went for strikes.

His fastball lived around 91-92 mph, according to the Star-Ledger. Tanaka will now head back to New York, though the team has not revealed any future next steps or an updated timetable for his return to the rotation. He will likely need at least one more rehab start, though that has not been confirmed.

Yankees pitcher Adam Warren allowed two runs on four hits in 6 1/3 innings of work in New York's 3-2 loss to the Nationals on Wednesday.

Warren allowed a solo home run to Ian Desmond in the first inning. Then, Warren settled in and didn't allow another run until the fourth when he allowed another solo home run to Tyler Moore. Warren, who also struck out four and walked four in the game, moved his ERA to 4.26 in 44 1/3 innings of work. Warren, now 2-3, will look to bounce back on Tuesday against the Royals.

Yankees closer Andrew Miller (0-1) was tagged for a two-run, walk-off homer Tuesday by the Nationals' Ryan Zimmerman, becoming the first time the left hander has allowed a run all season.

"Not a fastball up and away. That's kind of what he hits. And I knew that going into it. I just threw a really poor pitch," Miller said.

Miller's scoreless streak ended at 18 1/3 innings.

"The two guys at the back end of our bullpen have been really special," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about Miller and fellow reliever Dellin Betances.

Knee - 15-day DL. Out until at last early June (Updated - 5/20/15)
News
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said on Wednesday that outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury won't require surgery on his injured knee, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Ellsbury was placed on the disabled list with a knee sprain on Wednesday, and general manager Brian Cashman said that the injury wasn't expected to be a "long-term issue."

The outfielder, who suffered the injury on Tuesday, hasn't been informed about the severity of the injury, the Journal News reports.

"They literally haven’t told me anything," Ellsbury said. "They put me in a brace and I’ve just been doing treatment all day. I’ll be on the plane tonight, off day tomorrow, go in and do treatment again, and Friday see the team doctor."

Ellsbury has hit .324/.412/.372 with one home run, six RBI and 14 stolen bases in 148 at-bats.

News
Yankees catcher Brian McCann has hit just .189/.225/.243 with no home runs and 11 RBI in 74 at-bats on the road this season.

McCann has been beastly in Yankee Stadium, hitting .318/.392/.659 with four home runs in 44 at-bats, but he's been the opposite away from home. After a solid performance in April, McCann has posted a .588 OPS in 54 May at-bats, but 11 of his 15 games this month have come away from Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees have a pair of road games against the Nationals starting Tuesday before opening a six-game homestand.

News
The Yankees have called up outfielder Slade Heathcott from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, the team announced. Heathcott will take the roster spot from Jacoby Ellsbury, who went on the disabled list with a knee injury.

"I’ll use (Heathcott) for late innings for defense, and I could use him as a pinch runner," mnager Joe Girardi said, per the Journal News. "But he’s going to get some starts. I’m going to put him in the lineup and see how he does."

Heathcott was originally drafted by the Yankees in the first round of the 2009 draft. He's been toiling around in the minor leagues since then, never getting a taste of the Major Leagues. He's never really hit all that well in the Yankees' system, as he has a career .270 minor league batting average with 21 home runs.

This year he is batting .285 with four doubles, a triple and a home run in 151 at-bats at Triple-A. He's played mostly center field during his career and will likely be a depth piece for manager Joe Girardi in Ellbury's absence.
