The Athletics kept outfielder Josh Reddick and catcher Stephen Vogt out of Friday's lineup against the Astros, the team announced.

It appears the two were given the night off in order to rest. Cody Ross and Josh Phegley will replace Reddick and Vogt in the starting lineup Friday.

The Athletics are the favorites (-130) over the Astros on Friday.

News
Athletics pitcher Jesse Chavez was stuck with a loss in Thursday's spot start, giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks in six innings while striking out four in his team's 2-0 defeat against the Angels.

"To give up one hit on a moment’s notice to start, I don’t know how you can ask for much more than that," manager Bob Melvin said after the game, per MLB.com.

Chavez (0-1) had racked up 6 2/3 scoreless innings in relief coming into Thursday's start and gave up just one hit on the night, but that one mistake turned out to be a two-run home run by Kole Calhoun, providing the Angels with all the offense they would need for the win. Chavez owns a 0.71 ERA and 13:4 K:BB ratio in 12 2/3 innings. He'll likely head back to the bullpen, provided Jesse Hahn is healthy enough to make his next start.

With Athletics outfielder Craig Gentry more than struggling at the plate to start the year, manager Bob Melvin has decided to try and take some pressure off of him.

Gentry, normally Oakland's leadoff batter, was moved to eighth in the batting order. Gentry has started the season 0 for 22 with Melvin saying that he'll move back to the top spot once he starts hitting the ball.

“He’s been struggling some,” Melvin said, via the Bay Area News Group. “Everybody goes through that. It just works on you a little bit more when you start the season that way. Once Gentry gets going again, he’ll be back in the leadoff spot again against left-handers

Pomeranz tossed a scoreless first inning before the game started to get away from him in the second inning. He allowed a one-out, three-run homer to Johnny Giavotella. The Angels added a fourth run in the inning on a Marcus Semien fielding error, which allowed Kole Calhoun to score.

Pomeranz settled down after the rough second inning to post three scoreless innings before being lifted after allowing a leadoff double to C.J. Cron in the sixth inning. The Angels would score six times in the sixth inning after Pomeranz left the game.

News
Athletics relief pitcher Dan Otero came up big for his team Monday, giving up just one hit in four scoreless innings of relief while striking out four and walking none to earn the win in his team's 6-3 victory over the Angels.

Otero (1-1) combined with Evan Scribner and Tyler Clippard to throw six scoreless innings of one-hit ball after starter Kendall Graveman lasted just three innings.

"That's big," Melvin said after the game, per MLB.com. "Confidence for a lot of guys, too. You're talking about Otero getting a little confidence back, Scribner used in a little different role and getting three key outs and finally getting to Clippard in a save situation. We hadn't been able to do that this year."

Otero came into Monday's game with a 6.75 ERA in four innings over five appearances. He said catcher Stephen Vogt spotted something with his left shoulder in his delivery last week, and he's been working to adjust.

"I was just kind of turning my left shoulder in a little bit," he said. "Getting a little too rotational. That's something I've been cognizant of throwing in the outfield, warming up every day. Noticed it tonight it was good, and it helps all my other pitches when I can stay in line, can stay through the catcher instead of spinning off to the first baseman."

Otero has now posted a 3.38 ERA and 6:0 K:BB ratio in eight innings.

Despite giving up a home run and hitting a batter in his first minor-league rehab start, Athletics pitcher Jarrod Parker came away with mostly positive thoughts about being back on the mound.

“I might not have been very sharp," Parker said, via the Bay Area News Group. "My delivery was probably quick, but I was healthy enough to catch up and be where I wanted to be.”

Parker threw 56 pitches in 3 2/3 innings at Class A Stockton on Thursday. Coming off of Tommy John surgery, Parker is looking forward to being 100 percent again.

“Going through it for a second time, it’s not a cake walk, but you’re a little more comfortable with it,” Parker said. “We’re already a year out and everything has gone the way we wanted to go.”
