News
Athletics outfielder Coco Crisp is dealing with a short term case of pink eye and could miss a few more days of spring training, reports the San Jose Mercury News.

"We're hoping we've caught it early," manager Bob Melvin said. "He came in with it yesterday and we've got him at home now hoping this resolves itself quickly."

Crisp dealt with a similar problem at the end of the 2012 season, but isn't expected to miss as much time as he did then.

"We're hoping very much that it's not going to take him that long this time," Melvin said. "But if it had to happen, this is a good time, with so much of the spring left."

Barry Zito

News
Athletics starting pitcher Barry Zito is scheduled to make his first Cactus Leauge start Thursday against the Cubs, MLB.com reports.

The outing will be Zito's first game action since 2013. Manager Bob Melvin said earlier in February that Zito would get one shot in a Cactus League start to see whether he deserves a shot at a major-league comeback. If Thursday's start goes well, he could receive more chances with an eye on potentially making the team's rotation.

Zito won the AL Cy Young Award in 2002 as a member of the A's. He took the 2014 season off after the Giants declined his $18-million option.

"I have a fresh perspective," Zito said last week. "I've got my passion back, and I just want to continue to work hard and go out and enjoy competing. I guess you could say I'm competing against all these guys, but for me, it's more about competing against myself. If I can be as good as I know I can be every time out here, I know the rest will take care of itself."

Zito put together a 102-63 record in his time with Oakland as well as a 3.55 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 1,096 strikeouts in 1,430 1/3 innings over seven seasons. He then signed a big free-agent deal with the Giants, 63-80 with a 4.62 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 787 strikeouts in 1,139 1/3 innings over seven seasons.

The Athletics will hold back pitchers Sonny Gray and Scott Kazmir during the first week of spring games, according to the San Francisco Chronicle

Neither player is dealing with an injury, but the team has opted to bring them along slowly to kick things off. The move will also allow the Athletics to get a better look at the players competing for the fifth spot in the rotation. Those players will likely pick up innings in place of Kazmir and Gray.

Gray, 25, is coming off the biggest workload of his major-league career. He posted a 3.08 ERA over 219 innings.

The 31-year-old Kazmir made 30 starts last year. It was the first time since 2007 Kazmir reached that milestone. He put up a 3.55 ERA over 190 1/3 innings.

News
When the Mets traded Ike Davis to the Pirates last April, it put an end to a disappointing tenure in New York. Davis struggled to meet the expectations of being a former first-round pick, which is something he could live with.

Apparently, however, Davis couldn't live with a 2012 report citing the Mets were concerned about his nightlife habits. Davis had to encounter the topic when he met with Pirates manager Clint Hurdle after he was traded last year.

“Clint asked me about it when I first got over there,” Davis said, per the New York Daily News. “I was like, ‘I don’t know what to tell you, but a guy made up an article.’

“He was like, ‘I heard you’ve had issues.” And I was like, ‘Issues with what? I’ve never gotten in trouble. I’ve never gotten in a fight. I’ve never done anything to anyone. Yeah, I’ve gone out and had beers and stuff, but who hasn’t done that?’ I don’t know why I got singled out.”

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington told Davis at the end of last season he would squash any rumors regarding the issue, calling the report "ridiculous" after Davis proved to be a model teammate in 2014.

Even Athletics manager Bob Melviin said Davis’ reputation in the game is now sound and is glad to have him on the roster after Oakland picked him up in November.

Still, Davis remains bothered the accusations are connected to his tenure with the Mets.

“That’s really the only thing that I still have a dirty taste in my mouth about," he said. "Because everything else, you could see it in numbers. What, am I going to argue? I didn’t play well. But as far as calling me out for drinking problems, and being a bad influence -- that was a joke. It’s ridiculous. But you can use it as a learning experience: You can’t trust people.”

Shoulder - Expected to be placed on 15-day DL (Updated - 2/24/15)
News
Athletics reliever Sean Doolittle is hoping to be cleared to throw in a week or two, according to the San Francisco Chronicle

Doolittle was able to participate in strength tests on Saturday, and the results were positive. He has not been cleared to throw just yet, but is hoping that will come shortly. Doolittle has been sidelined by a shoulder injury during the start of camp.

The 28-year-old posted a 2.73 ERA over 62 2/3 innings last year.

Athletics pitcher Kendall Graveman is already impressing his teammates during camp, according to the San Francisco Chronicle

The 24-year-old was acquired by the club during the offseason, and is expected to compete for a spot in the rotation this spring. In order to do so, he'll need to utilize his cut-fastball. Graveman accidentally discovered the pitch in the minors, and worked to repeat his motion in order to perfect the pitch.

His new catcher, Stephen Vogt, came away impressed with the offering after a recent bullpen session. "It’s impressive stuff, a lot of movement late, good arm motion, the stuff is electric," Vogt said. "The cutter is good, it’s a little big but it will only get better and better, which is exciting."

Graveman pitched five games in relief with Toronto last year.
