News
Athletics pitcher Jeff Samardzija turned in an excellent start against the Astros Thursday.

Samardzija allowed one run on five hits over eight innings. He struck out six and did not allow any walks. The only blemish against Samardzija came in the fourth inning. With the bases empty, Samardzija allowed a solo home run to Chris Carter. Other than that, he was fantastic.

With the win, Samardzija improved to 4-8 on the year. He’ll take on the Astros in his next start.

News
The Athletics made a surprising move Thursday, as reliever Jim Johnson was designated for assignment.

Johnson began the season as the A's closer after being acquired in a December trade with Baltimore. Johnson was removed from the closer's role after a few weeks and had been pitching in middle relief. However, his performance lately had been pretty bad. He's allowed 12 runs (11 earned) in his last five outings.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise since Johnson's name has been linked to trade rumors. In fact, he was almost traded to Miami in early June and it's reported the Marlins are still interested in the veteran reliever.

Athletics pitcher Scott Kazmir wasn't a factor in Tuesday's decision, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk in seven innings and striking out six in his team's extra-innings game against the Astros.

Kazmir wasn't able to pick up his third straight win despite holding the opposition to one earned run or fewer for the fourth straight start. The Oakland pitcher has been at the top of his game over the last few months, aside from an ugly seven-run outing in late June. Kazmir owns a 2.32 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 114:28 K:BB ratio in 124 1/3 innings. He's slated to take on the Rangers Sunday.

Thumb - Questionable for July 25 at Texas (Updated - 7/24/14)
News
Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was held out of the starting lineup Thursday against the Astros after leaving Wednesday's game due to a thumb injury. Brandon Moss was in left field Thursday for Oakland.

Manager Bob Melvin said Cespedes might be available off the bench Thursday and could be back in the lineup Friday at Texas.

Cespedes has been on a roll out of the All-Star break, hitting safely in his first five games. He is batting .381 (8 for 21) with two doubles, two home runs, five RBI and six runs in that span.
