Knee - 15-day DL. Might begin Class A rehab assignment July 14 (Updated - 7/11/14)
News
Athletics outfielder Josh Reddick could begin a rehab assignment as soon as Friday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Reddick will remain on assignment through the All-Star break before potential returning to the team late next week. He's played just four games since the end of May while dealing with knee issues. Reddick is expected to wear a brace on the troublesome knee for the remainder of the season.

News
Clearly, you're not cutting Jesse Chavez in Fantasy, particularly if you play in a league where his relief pitcher eligibility means something to you, but his nine-strikeout performance Monday against the Giants really brought into focus just how much his stock has fallen over the last couple months. It wouldn't have been a big deal in April, when he recorded more than a strikeout per inning with regularity, but in the eight starts leading up to Monday's, he averaged just 6.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

And it's not like his walk rate (3.3 per nine) during that stretch was so hot either. He seems to be losing steam after his out-of-nowhere success to begin the season, and while this current version of him is still useful, it may have its limits. Chavez spent most of last season in the bullpen, remember, and as a result, accumulated just 87 1/3 innings between the majors and minors. He's at 109 innings now.

True, he's had other seasons when he started enough to eclipse 130 innings, or at least come close, so I'm not saying 150 or 160 is out of his reach. But 180 may be. I'm guessing it's a big reason why the Athletics felt they had to acquire two arms in the Cubs trade even with Tommy Milone pitching well and Drew Pomeranz recovering from injury.

I'm thinking Chavez cedes his rotation spot to one of those two before the end of August.

Athletics shortstop Jed Lowrie has produced a career-high five straight multi-hit games. He's gone 2 for 4 in each, raising his average to .234. In that span, Lowrie has scored five runs and driven in two.

Despite his poor average, Lowrie's 23.7 percent line-drive rate is his best since his rookie year, notes MLB.com.

"Literally everything is exactly the same, except the hits weren't falling," Lowrie said before Wednesday's game. "It still is a head-scratcher."

Hamstring - Questionable for July 12 at Seattle (Updated - 7/11/14)
News
Angels infielder Alberto Callaspo's hamstring injury could keep him out through the remainder of the team's series in Seattle this weekend, but it does not appear to be a long-term issue.

Callaspo told MLB.com after the game Friday he thinks he will be back after the All-Star break, without a trip to the disabled list.

Athletics starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija went the distance but took a tough-luck loss in a duel against Felix Hernandez and the Mariners Friday night, dropping to 3-8 on the year. The right-hander yielded three runs on five hits and no walks while striking out five over eight innings of a 3-2 defeat.

Over his first two starts -- with his new team -- covering 15 innings, Samardzija has allowed only four earned runs. He enters the All-Star break with a 2.78 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP over 19 starts (123 innings). He'll likely be at the top of the rotation once Oakland returns from the All-Star break.

Athletics pitcher Jason Hammel said after Wednesday's game that his thumb felt fine after being looked at by a trainer during the game, MLB.com reports.

Hammel said that his thumb just cramped up and that it was the first time it had ever happened to him. He went on to finish the fifth inning after being visited by the trainer but didn't come out for the sixth with 99 pitches already in the bank. The minor issue shouldn't affect his availability moving forward.

Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will be looking for his second straight title when he participates in this year's Home Run Derby.

Cespedes was officially selected to be part of the AL team this season Tuesday. He more than doubled any of his competitors in the first round last season by hitting 17 home runs, adding six more in the second round to cruise into the Finals, where he defeated Bryce Harper 9-8. Named as a reserve to the AL All-Star squad Sunday, Cespedes has hit 14 home runs in 332 at-bats this season.
