News
Pirates starter Francisco Liriano allowed a season-high 10 hits on Wednesday, but he came away with his seventh win of the season. Liriano went 5 2/3 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts and no walks in the 10-4 win over the Twins.

Liriano (7-6, 2.92 ERA) got off to a shaky start, as the Twins had a 3-1 lead after the third inning. But he was able to settle in from there, as he gave his club a chance to rally and take the lead in the middle innings. A high pitch count--106 pitches through two outs in the sixth--led to Liriano's early exit, costing him a chance at a quality start.

The veteran left-hander is 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA over his past six starts.

News
Pirates closer Mark Melancon was far from perfect on Friday night, but he was able to escape with his 33rd save of the season in Friday's 5-4 win over the Reds.

Melancon gave up a hit to Brandon Phillips to lead off the ninth. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk, Todd Frazier ripped a single to left, but Phillips was thrown out at the plate trying to score. Melancon would get the next batter to put the game to bed.

It was a shaky outing for Melancon, but he got the job done as he converted his 31st consecutive save opportunity.

Pirates starter Jeff Locke was decent against the Reds on Friday. The left-hander allowed three runs on five hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out five, as he picked up his sixth win of the year in the 5-4 victory.

Locke (6-6, 4.21 ERA) allowed all three of his runs in the second inning, including a two-run home run by Ivan De Jesus. But he was able to settle in from there and gave the Pirates' offense a chance to rally back and take the lead.

Locke had a good month of July, going 2-2 with a 3.27 ERA in five starts.
