Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez went deep for the first time in eight games Tuesday, in a 5-4 loss to the Cardinals.

Alvarez had just one hit as he went 1 for 4 in the game, but he made it count. Alvarez clubbed a two-run home run in the fourth inning to open the scoring for Pittsburgh, though it was his only contribution in the loss.

Alvarez is hitting .240/.326/.412 with 14 home runs in 88 games.

News
Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen has been on a run-producing tear recently, and he drove in two more runs in a 5-4 loss to the Cardinals Tuesday.

McCutchen went 1 for 3 with a walk in the loss, but made his lone hit count. He clubbed a two-run home run in the fifth inning to put the Pirates up briefly, before the Cardinals came back to win it.

McCutchen has drive in seven runs over the last five games, bringing his overall total to 56, good for fifth in the National League. He is hitting .319/.419/.546 with 14 home runs in 88 games.

News
Yeah, I'll say there's some legitimacy to Charlie Morton's 2.80 ERA over his last seven starts. Anyone who doesn't isn't paying enough attention. He had a 2.67 ERA over his final 11 starts last year as well.

But what isn't legitimate are his 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings during that stretch. Like most ground ball pitchers, he's not a bat-misser, having never averaged even 7.0 strikeouts per nine innings in the big leagues. At least up until recently, he aimed for quick outs by pitching to contact, trusting it would be weak enough to result in an out. It's the M.O. of pitchers like Tim Hudson, Henderson Alvarez, Mike Leake and Kyle Gibson, and it certainly has its place in Fantasy.

Of course, more contact by its very nature yields more hits, so the downside to a ground ball specialist is a high WHIP relative to the ERA and, of course, a low strikeout rate. I'm not willing to suggest that after seven starts Morton has reinvented himself, so he's just as susceptible. It's enough to make him an iffy option in mixed leagues most weeks, though like Leake, you'll want to keep him around for the two-start weeks.

Pirates starter Brandon Cumpton lasted less than four innings Wednesday against the Cardinals.

Cumpton was very hittable, allowing four runs on nine hits in just 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two during the outing. Things could have been worse, as Cumpton loaded the bases in the fourth inning. After getting one out, he was removed with the bases juiced. Ernesto Frieri managed to work out of the jam without surrendering any additional runs, most of which would have been charged to Cumpton.

The loss dropped Cumpton to 3-3 on the year. It's unclear when Cumpton will make his next start due to the approaching All-Star break.
