News
Pirates shortstop Jung Ho Kang went 2 for 5 at the plate in Pittsburgh's 3-2 loss to the Cardinals in 14 innings on Sunday.

Kang did his damage in the ninth inning, taking the first pitch he saw from Trevor Rosenthal over the center field wall for a solo home run, his first in the majors, to tie the game.

"I was ready," Kang said through interpreter H.K. Kim. "My timing on it was perfect, and I put a good swing on it."

Kang is now hitting .281 with seven RBI in 32 at-bats this season.

News
Pirates pitcher Vance Worley wasn't a factor in the decision Sunday, giving up just one earned run on four hits and one walk in six innings while striking out five in his team's 3-2 loss in 14 innings.

Worley pitched well for the third time in his last four starts, with the only damage coming on a solo home run by Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter in the fourth inning. That was enough to keep him from a win, as the Cardinals managed to hold the Pirates scoreless until a Jung Ho Kang ninth-inning home run tied the game.

"This was my first time [throwing to] Stewart for more than one batter, and we had a good talk before we went out to play catch," Worley said. "We had a good game plan. We knew that against this lineup, we had to mix it up and not be predictable."

Worley owns a 3.90 ERA and 23:10 K:BB ratio in 30 innings. He'll square off with the Cardinals again Saturday, this time at home.

Pirates centerfielder Andrew McCutchen went 0 for 4 on Tuesday to drop his batting average to .185 through 92 at-bats.

McCutchen, the 2013 National League MVP, said after Tuesday's loss to the Reds that he doesn't need time off but avoided answering if he was injured.

“Right now I’m not doing what I should be doing for the money I’m making," McCutchen said. "Right now, it's under mediocre right now ... It's bad and I know I'm better than that."

Pirates starter Francisco Liriano gave up just one run in eight innings, but his offense didn't cooperate, forcing him to leave with a no decision in an extra-innings loss to St. Louis.

Liriano gave up three hits, none until the sixth inning. He walked three while striking out four. He threw 98 pitches, 61 strikes and reduced his ERA to 1.95.

"The whole key is not to try to do too much and stay calm," Liriano said. "Location-wise, everything was (good)."

Liriano will get St. Louis again on Friday, in his next scheduled start.

Pirates third baseman Josh Harrison is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's matchup with the Reds.

Harrison played a total of 35 innings during a three-game stretch over the weekend as the Pirates lost three straight extra-innings games to the Cardinals. The Pirates were off Monday, but Harrison will get an extra day to rest.

"He's had the tendency throughout the season at times where the weight is transferring from back to front, and the term we use is it's almost like falling into your swing," manager Clint Hurdle said Tuesday, per the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "It's (about) getting that foot down, holding his backside, keeping his weight where it needs to be."

With the third baseman out, Francisco Cervelli will bat second for the third time this season.

"You've got to come to the field ready for anything," Cervelli said. "I just like to be in the lineup. I spent a lot of time in my career showing up and seeing my name at the bottom of the paper (as a bench player). Now I just like to see it anywhere in No. 1 through 9, and I'm happy."

The Pirates are favorites (-145) against the Reds at home Tuesday.

Pirates second baseman Neil Walker is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

It's Walker's first break from starting in more than two weeks. He has hit .270/.320/.393 with one home run, nine RBI and one stolen base in 89 at-bats but is just 3 for 19 over the last five games. With Walker on the bench, Josh Harrison will shift from third base to second, while Jung Ho Kang will make the start at the hot corner.

The Pirates are underdogs (+132) in St. Louis Sunday, per VegasInsider.com.

Todd Frazier connected for a solo homer off Locke while Marlon Byrd added a two-run shot.

After winning his first two starts of the season, Locke has now dropped two in a row.

"I don't think there's cause for concern or anybody stressing out or anything," Locke said. "It's still early ... There's no sense of urgency or anything like that. It's a long season."
