News
The Pirates called up reliever Deolis Guerra from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday. His first appearance in a game will be his MLB debut.

Guerra is probably most recognized for being included in the 2008 trade that sent Johan Santana from the Twins to the Mets. Unfortunately, Guerra never really hit his stride in the minors until this season. He is 2-1 with a 1.23 ERA in 25 relief appearances for Indianapolis.

Gorkys Hernandez , just called up from the minor leagues, will start in Polanco's place. He becomes the seventh player the Pirates have started in right this season.

Hernandez is playing his first MLB game since Oct. 3, 2012 and playing right for the first time since July 25 of that year.

Hot-and-cold Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez is hot again. He ran his hitting streak to five games in a Saturday victory over Atlanta with two hits.

Alvarez doubled in two in a five-run first and added a single to give him seven hits in his last 10 at-bats. He has six RBI during that stretch after enduring a 2-for-17 slide.

News
Pirates starter Charlie Morton went from cruising to struggling to leaving Saturday against visiting Atlanta. But a stellar performance from the bullpen made certain he emerged with his sixth win in seven decisions.

Morton had retired 11 in a row entering the seventh inning with a 6-1 lead. But he allowed two singles, a hit-by-pitch and three-run double to Jace Peterson that proved the knockout blow before departing. He finished having given up 10 hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

He has surrendered just 10 runs in 39 1/3 innings this season aside from his disastrous last start in which he couldn't get out of the first.

Pirates left-hander Francisco Liriano was in fine form on Friday against the Braves, but was saddled with a no-decision. Liriano went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out three in the extra-innings walk-off victory.

Liriano gave up a run in the second on a bases-loaded walk, but settled in after that. That is, until Juan Uribe launched a solo home run in the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2.

"Every once in a while, with runners on, Frankie gets quick with his delivery and loses that release point," said Pirates manager Clint Hurdle, per MLB.com. "He recalibrated after that and was in sync, up until Uribe's swing."

Overall, it was a solid bounceback effort from Liriano, who had allowed five runs in his previous start.

Prior to his three-hit game Sunday, Mercer was hitting .244 with four doubles and four RBI in his last 11 games.

Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli finally appears destined to receive significant at-bats this year for the first time in his career. He continued to make the most of it Saturday against Atlanta.

He boasts a fine slash line of .307/.379/.408. He is batting .300 since the start of the 2013 season.

News
Pirates left fielder Starling Marte had shown signs of breaking out of a mini-slump recently with a three-game hitting streak heading into Saturday.

He ended all doubt in a defeat of Atlanta, slamming three singles and scoring three runs. He even stole home in the fifth inning for good measure.

Marte singled and scored in the first, fifth and seventh. He now has six hits in his last 13 at-bats.
