News
Pirates starting pitcher Edinson Volquez continued his solid start to the season Tuesday, but had to settle for his first loss as he was outdueled in a 4-1 loss to the Reds.

Volquez made very few mistakes through his seven innings of work, but he didn't have much room for error with Johnny Cueto tossing his second complete game in a row. Volquez opened the game with six shutout innings, before allowing a pair of runs in the seventh inning, an that was enough to get him saddled with the loss.

Volquez was charged with two runs on five hits and a walk in his seven innings of work. He struck out three while throwing 71 of 100 pitches for strikes in the loss.

Volquez is now just 1-1 through four starts, despite a 1.93 ERA in 28 innings of work. He will try to get back over .500 in his next start Sunday in St. Louis.

News
Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen has caught fire, homering for the third straight game Wednesday against the Reds.

McCutchen put together his third multi-hit game in a row to go along with the homer, a solo shot in the third inning of a 5-2 loss. He finished the game 2 for 4 with one RBI, one run scored and one walk.

As recently as Sunday, McCutchen was hitting just .243 with only one home run. He now has four homers on the season, and is hitting .298/.423/.536 in 84 at-bats.

News
Pirates starting pitcher Charlie Morton cruised through the early innings of his start against the Reds Wednesday, but hit a wall in a 5-2 loss, his third of the season.

Morton had a 2-1 win after three innings of work, and entered the fifth having allowed just one run. Unfortunately, things came apart in the fifth, as the Reds scored three times, which was good enough to drop Morton to 0-3 on the season.

Morton was ultimately charged with four runs -- three earned -- in six innings of work, allowing four hits and five walks. He struck out four batters, while throwing 59 of 108 pitches for strikes.

Morton has pitched better than his 0-3 record would indicate, but He still has a 4.35 ERA through five starts. He will look to get his first win in his next start, Tuesday in Baltimore.

Knee - 15-day DL. Out until at least mid-May (Updated - 4/23/14)
News
The Pirates have yet to give many details on the extent of the knee injury that forced starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez to the disabled list Monday. Manager Clint Hurdle did tell MLB.com that Rodriguez has the knee drained Monday, though that doesn't really much of a clear idea as the injury's extent.

"You can get a knee drained and have to get it drained again in two months," Hurdle said. "I know people who have had their knee drained a couple of times and had surgery in the winter. It depends on the guy. We'll just have to wait and see."

Rodriguez underwent an MRI on the knee Monday, but the results have not been made public yet.

Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano didn't factor into the decision Monday after giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks in seven innings while striking out four in his team's 6-5 win over the Reds.

Liriano is still looking for his first win of the season after letting the first two batters of the eighth inning reach base, as both came around to score. He did avoid surrendering a home run for the first time in four starts. Liriano owns a 4.22 ERA and 32:12 K:BB ratio in 32 innings. He'll take on the Cardinals in St. Louis Saturday.
