News
Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez has worked on becoming more than just a hitter that likes to pull pitches this season

Wanting to change this, Alvarez has been working before games to break the habit of trying to pull pitches on the outside corner of the plate, according to MLB.com.

"The approach has always been the same," Alvarez said. "I just think it's a combination of seeing pitches out there and being able to put good swings on them and executing the swing to the pitch."

In Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Marlins, Alvarez was able to record an RBI opposite-field single in the seventh inning during his team's rally to win.

"The work he is doing before the game and in the cage is transferring to the game. That's the biggest part," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "Our guys have found a way to slow themselves down to a better pace, a much more workable pace, the last week or so. Pedro in particular."

Pirates starting pitcher A.J. Burnett won a fifth straight start Thursday at San Diego, improving to 5-1 with a 1.81 ERA through 10 starts.

Thursday was actually the first time all season the 38-year-old veteran allowed more than two runs in a start, but he's enjoyed a nice turnaround after totaling a career-worst 18 losses in 2014 with the Phillies.

"I'm throwing the same stuff I threw when I was here before, or even last year," Burnett said, per MLB.com. "People are saying I'm doing more because I'm executing more. The difference between the last couple of years and this year is that I'm executing more pitches than I'm not, that's the bottom line. I'm just sticking to the things I do."

Pirates pitcher Jeff Locke didn't allow an earned run in Tuesday night's 5-1 victory over the Marlins.

Though Locke walked four batters, he did strike out six and only gave up four hits through 5 2/3 innings. This was the first time during the 2015 season that Locke didn't allow a run during a start.

The game tied a season-low for hits allowed but also set a season-high for walks allowed. It also extended Pittsburgh's winning streak to five games in a row.

"I think everyone wants to keep this going as long as we can," Locke said, via MLB.com. "If we bump in and don't come out on top, then we've got another one the next day. I think the clubhouse right now is in a great place and everybody's doing a great job."

Locke now holds a 4.70 ERA this season. His next start is projected for Sunday against the Padres.

Pirates starting pitcher Gerrit Cole had great stuff in his team's 5-2 win over the Marlins on Wednesday.

Cole (7-2) tossed seven innings, struck out seven batter and allowed just two earned runs in the win.

"It's a big deal. Free passes tend to hurt you," Cole said to MLB.com. "For the most part, just attacking guys and staying down in the zone and forcing early contact keeps guys uncomfortable. It stops rallies."

Cole's two earned runs came on one-run home runs by Justin Bour and Christian Yelich. In 64 innings this season, Cole has allowed just 15 earned runs.
