News
Andrew McCutchen had a big night at the plate for the Pirates, driving in four runs to help his team cruise to a victory over the Marlins.

McCutchen got the Pirates on the board with a first-inning double and followed that with a three-run homer in the second as Pittsburgh opened a 7-1 lead. McCutchen now has five home runs and 19 RBIs in August.

With his 20th home run, McCutchen has now reached that benchmark in five straight seasons.

Pirates starter Charlie Morton had a rough outing against the Marlins on Tuesday night. The right-hander allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings in the 5-2 loss. With the outing, his ERA rises to 4.20.

Morton (8-5) was given a an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but he was unable to make that stand up. He gave up individual runs in the fourth and fifth before the Marlins put up a three-spot in the sixth.

Morton is now 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA over his past five starts. Tuesday's start snapped a personal four-game win streak for the right-hander.

News
Perhaps it has taken nine seasons and five organizations for starter J.A. Happ to begin realizing his potential. Just maybe he is doing that with the Pirates.

Happ remained on at least a mini-roll Monday in Miami by tossing six shutout innings with one walk and six strikeouts in raising his record with his new team to 2-1.

He got the Marlins out in order only twice, but got stronger as the outing progressed, retiring 11 of the last 12 batters he faced.

Happ has given up just one run in his last 17 1/3 innings to lower his ERA to 2.08 since arriving in Pittsburgh.

Mercer has been supplanted by the solid play of rookie Jung Ho Kang, and his time as a starter may be limited. Mercer is hitting .241 in 81 games this season for Pittsburgh.
