News
Pirates closer Jason Grilli has been lights out all season, but he showed Tuesday he is, in fact, mortal. Grilli allowed one run on two hits and a walk to the Cubs, however he still earned the save, in a 5-4 win.

Grilli struck out one batter en route to his 18th save of the season, giving him the most in the National League. The run was just the third he has allowed all season, and second in 9 2/3 innings in the month of May.

Grilli has a 1.31 ERA in 20 2/3 innings of work, with 11 hits, five walks and 32 strikeouts.

Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez hit his eighth home run, the decider in a 1-0 win Sunday over Houston.

Alvarez continues to struggle with his average (.201) and making contact (31.5 percent strikeout rate), but his power continues to show up. He's on pace for another 30 home run season with Sunday's blast.

News
Pirates starter A.J. Burnett struck out seven but did not factor into the decision in a 4-2 loss Saturday night against the Astros.

Burnett surrendered a run-scoring infield single to Jose Altuve in the fift and allowed the one run on five hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked four on 100 pitches, 63 for strikes.

Burnett has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his starts. He will try to get his first win since May 3 when he starts Friday at Milwaukee. He allowed four runs -- three earned -- over seven innings in his last meeting with the Brewers May 13.

Pirates outfielder Travis Snider was not in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Cubs, but he still eventually found a way to make his impact felt. He came into the game in the sixth inning with the based loaded and deposited a pinch-hit grand slam over the fence in right-center field.

Snider went 1 for 2 with a run scored and four driven in, in a 5-4 win. Snider has two home runs on the season, both of which have come in the last five games. He is batting .278 with a .761 on-base plus slugging percentage.

Back, elbow - 15-day DL. Out until at least early June (Updated - 5/19/13)
News
Pirates infielder John McDonald, on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain, is also experiencing elbow discomfort, manager Clint Hurdle told MLB.com Saturday.

McDonald is expected to go on a rehab assignment before he would be activated. He has been sidelined since May 14 and was hitless in his last six games before landing on the DL.

News
Pirates starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez fell behind early Tuesday against the Cubs, but managed to hold on long enough for a quality start and the win.

Rodriguez allowed three runs in the second inning, on four hits, but otherwise held the Cubs silent all game long.  He ultimately allowed just the three runs on six hits in six innings of work, while striking out five batters and walking none.

He needed just 87 pitches to finish his six innings of work. He exited the game down 3-0, but the Pirates rallied back in the bottom half of the sixth to put him in line for the win. Pittsburgh would hold on for a 5-4 victory, Rodriguez's fifth of the season. He lowered his ERA to 3.40.

Rodriguez is expected to make his next start Sunday, against the Brewers. He had his worst start of the season against the Brewers in April, but bounce back to limit them to one run in seven innings May 15.

News
Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano is showing improved numbers in his small two-game sample. His first-strike percentage is at it's highest rate since 2010. He's also induced swinging strikes 14.9 percent of the time, his highest rate since 2006. He's been an extreme-fly ball pitcher in his two starts, with just 28.6 percent of balls in play being grounders.

As Fantasy owners know, Liriano has shown flashes like this before, so he's not completely safe after just two starts. Based on what he's shown, he's worth a speculative pickup. But owners should be cautious with his usage. Liriano will pitch against the Cubs Wednesday.

News
Pirates starter James McDonald is slated to begin a rehab assignment May 27 at Double-A Altoona, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

McDonald hasn't pitched since April 30 against Milwaukee due to a shoulder injury. McDonald has bullpen sessions scheduled for Tuesday and Friday leading into the rehab assignment. Expect him to take at least two rehab starts in the minors.

News
Pirates pitcher Jeff Locke knows the advanced stats say he'll regress, but he contends he's a different pitcher this season, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Locke has a 2.73 ERA in nine starts, but his 4.47 FIP indicates that he's been pitching over his head. Locke said the stat hasn't picked up on the fact that he's throwing a two-seam fastball or the adjustment he made with his delivery. Locke believes he's getting more deception after learning from Erik Bedard.

Nothing in Locke's profile suggests his performance is sustainable. Neither his walk and strikeout rate is elite, and his .224 BABIP will not last. Locke has been extremely homer-prone over his career, but getting that rate down could help his overall numbers. Still, the advanced stats are concerning, despite Locke's insistence.
