News
Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett tossed six shutout innings while striking out seven batters during Friday's 2-1 loss to the Cardinals.

Despite not allowing a run, Burnett received a no-decision for his effort after he exited with a one-run lead in the sixth inning. Pitcher Arquimedes Caminero relieved Burnett in the seventh and surrendered the game-tying run. Burnett also walked three batters and his ERA now stands at 1.45.

Despite not allowing more than two runs in any of his five starts this season, Burnett (0-1) has yet to record his first win of the season. He has allowed a total of five runs over his five starts this season.

His next expected start is scheduled for Thursday against the Reds.

Liriano gave up three hits, none until the sixth inning. He walked three while striking out four. He threw 98 pitches, 61 strikes and reduced his ERA to 1.95.

"The whole key is not to try to do too much and stay calm," Liriano said. "Location-wise, everything was (good)."

Liriano will get St. Louis again on Friday, in his next scheduled start.

News
Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole earned a win Wednesday, giving up just one unearned run on three hits and one walk in six innings while striking out eight in his team's 8-1 victory over the Cubs.

Cole (4-0) has surrendered just three earned runs in his last four starts, all wins, since a mediocre season debut. His only run allowed came on a second-inning single to put the Cubs ahead, but the Pirates had no trouble giving the starter the win, scoring nine runs over the final six innings of the game.

"It's nice to get out of here without getting swept," Cole said after the game, per MLB.com. "We can relax a little more on the off-day, clear our minds and get ready for St. Louis this weekend."

Cole owns a 1.76 ERA and 35:8 K:BB ratio in 30 2/3 innings across five starts. The Pirates are off Thursday and Monday, so Cole's next start could come either Tuesday or Wednesday against the Reds at home.
