The Pirates have called up outfielder Jose Tabata from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioned pitcher Wilfredo Boscan back to Triple-A, the team announced on Tuesday.

"We were aggressive with Tabby in what we believed he needed to do to get back to the big leagues this season. He's working hard to make that adjustment," general manager Neal Huntington said last week per MLB.com. "He has played very well for them, and as important, he's played hard. He's running well again, and he's showing up for every pitch and getting after it.

"We've been very open with Jose that while we hope his return to the big leagues is with us, he's a guy that may need to get somebody else's attention and have somebody come get him back to the big leagues. If that happens, we'll be happy for him, but if it happens here, that's great for us as well."

In addition, Justin Sellers was transferred to the 60-day DL. Tabata is hitting .352 with four RBI in 28 games for Indianapolis. Boscan did not appear in a game for Pittsburgh after being called up three days ago.

With Pirates right fielder Gregory Polanco in an 0-for-18 slump, manager Clint Hurdle gave Polanco the day off Wednesday in the hopes of turning his luck around, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"It's been a hard stretch here lately," Hurdle said. "He's fighting, he wants to play, he wants to compete. I think sometimes you've got to unplug him. He's out there [Wednesday] trying to get some work in and do some things. We'll take it one day at a time."

"That start didn't work out well for him. He'll be back. He'll be better," manager Clint Hurdle said after the game. "He's going to work. He's going to take ownership of it."

Liriano dropped to 1-4 and saw his ERA increase to 4.15. His next start is Monday, against Miami.

News
For the second-consecutive season, Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer has started the season in a slump and manager Clint Hurdle said Mercer's struggles may be mental, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"That's what we worked last year, the mental part of it first, and then we got into the physical glitch or the mechanical glitch," Hurdle said. "It's similar in some areas, very similar in some areas. We've got to get his hands to work better."

Mercer is hitting .171 in 111 at-bats this season and Hurdle hopes giving Mercer a few games off will help him correct his swing.

"If we've got a mechanical situation where our hands aren't going where we want them to go, why?" Hurdle said. "What are you trying to do? What are you trying to generate? Are you trying to generate power, are you trying to generate lift?"

News
Pirates outfielder Starling Marte was given a stern talking to on Wednesday after making a "lazy" play in Tuesday's game against the Twins, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune

Manager Clint Hurdle considered benching Marte on Wednesday, but kept him in the lineup.

"We talked about a few things," Hurdle said. "So I think we have a very good understanding now of where we're going."

Marte had a slow reaction to a single in the outfield, allowing Brian Dozier to score from first base.

"(Marte) was kind of lackadaisical, to pick it up and just kind of throw it in," Dozier said. "You've got the bases loaded and you're hoping to get the out and get out of the jam, and then three runs (score). That's a backbreaker."

Hurdle couldn't believe what he saw.

"It was a very disappointing play," Hurdle said. "I shared my thoughts with the player, personally. It wasn't the first time I've shared my thoughts with Starling or any of the players when things have happened that we don't believe should happen to us. You've got to be ready every pitch. You've got to be ready to play. You've got to have an awareness of the game."
