Pirates outfielder Jose Tabata returned to the starting lineup Friday.

Tabata missed Wednesday's game due to concussion-like symptoms. While he didn't start Thursday, he was used off the bench during the game. Tabata will play right field and hit seventh Friday.

Pirates closer Jason Grilli slammed the door Tuesday to earn his fourth save and give his team an 8-7 win over the Reds in the completion of Monday's suspended game.

Grilli struck out two batters in the 1-2-3 inning while throwing 12 pitches, and it's possible he'll be tabbed for another save opportunity in Tuesday's regularly scheduled game. He has given up one earned run in six innings while striking out five and walking four.

News
Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez hit his sixth home run of the season Thurday against the Brewers.

Alvarez managed to find himself on base four times during the game. He singled in the bottom of the fourth, and walked in both the sixth and seventh inning. In the bottom of the eighth, he clubbed a three-run home run off a 93 mph fastball from Wei-Chung Wang.

Alvarez finished the game 2 for 3, with one run scored and three RBI.

News
Pirates starting pitcher Edinson Volquez continued his strong start to the season Thursday, and finally picked up his first win as he took down the Brewers, 11-2.

Volquez seemed destined for another no-decision, exiting the game after seven strong innings with the score tied 2-2. Fortunately, the Pirates offense came alive in the next earning, granting him the win.

Volquez was charged with two runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings of work. He struck out just three, but was efficient throughout the game, needing just 77 pitches to finish his seven innings of work.

Volquez has opened the season well, posting a 1.71 ERA in four appearances, three starts. He will look for his second win in his next start, scheduled for Tuesday against the Reds.

News
Pirates first baseman Gaby Sanchez went 2 for 4 with two solo home runs in Monday's suspended game that ended in an 8-7 win over the Pirates Tuesday.

The home runs were the first of the season for Sanchez, who is 4 for 16 in limited action. Both of the right-handers home runs came off righties, and he could continue to see some action against right-handed pitchers moving forward.

News
Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen brought his season-opening power outage to an end Thursday, in an 11-2 win over the Brewers.

McCutchen's  homerless drought reached 15 games with the end of his last appearance, and he wasn't interested in letting it leak into a 16th game, as he took Yovani Gallardo deep in the bottom of the first for a 422-foot slam to center field. McCutchen drove in two runs on that swing, and added one more RBI on a fielder's choice later in the game, finishing 1 for 5 and extending his hitting streak to six games.

McCutchen has set the bar pretty high with his play in recent seasons, so his .262/.378/.410 line through 16 games is a disappointment so far. He has still driven in eight runs and score seven, with six extra-base hits in 61 at-bats.

News
Pirates starting pitcher Charlie Morton dropped his second decision in a row Friday, in a 5-3 loss to the Brewers.

Morton cruised to an early 2-0 lead after three innings of work, but ran into trouble soon after. The Brewers scored three runs in the fourth inning, and added one each in the fifth and sixth, both off the bat of Carlos Gomez.

Morton was charged with five earned runs on eight hits and a pair of walks in six innings, while striking out three batters. He is 0-2 with a 4.32 ERA heading into his fifth start, scheduled for Wednesday against Cincinnati.

News
Pirates starting pitcher Francisco Liriano dropped a third straight start Wednesday, as Pittsburgh managed just three hits off Johnny Cueto during a 4-0 loss to the Reds.

The Reds jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Billy Hamilton scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning. The deficit remained at one run until Joey Votto hit a two-run homer off Liriano with two outs in the seventh inning.

Liriano (0-3) was charged with three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out seven in seven innings. He lowered his ERA from 4.00 to 3.96.

The veteran left-handed hurler is expected to be back on the hill Monday in a rematch with the Reds.

Ankle - Questionable for April 19 vs. Milwaukee (Updated - 4/18/14)
News
Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer was forced out of Friday's game against the Brewers, after taking a shot to the ankle while playing in the field.

He initially stayed in the game after a Brewers baserunner slid into his right ankle, but left shortly after, as Clint Barmes replaced him in the fourth inning. The team announced he was removed from the game with discomfort in the ankle, though nothing more is known at this point.

News
Pirates pitcher Bryan Morris picked up a win Tuesday in the completion of Monday's suspended game against the Reds.

Morris (2-0) gave up the tying run in the sixth inning Monday before the game was suspended at 7-7 in the top of the seventh. Once play resumed, the Pirates tacked on what would be the winning run in an 8-7 victory in the seventh inning, allowing Morris to be credited with the win. Monday's run is the only one Morris has surrendered in six innings while striking out seven and walking none.

Knee - 15-day DL. On Triple-A rehab assignment (Updated - 4/14/14)
News
Pirates catcher Chris Stewart (knee) will catch Jeff Locke's start for Triple-A Indianapolis Wednesday, but manager Clint Hurdle said a "plan is in place" for him to rejoin the major-league roster, per MLB.com.

"There's a couple of steps we still need to accomplish to get him ready to return," Hurdle said.

News
Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole didn't have his best stuff Tuesday, giving up five earned runs on nine hits and three walks in six innings while striking out three in his team's 7-5 loss to the Reds.

Cole (2-1) gave up two home runs in the outing, both in a four-run sixth inning and one to opposing pitcher Mike Leake. It was the first poor performance of the season for the young Pirates ace, who owns a 4.74 ERA and 16:7 K:BB ratio in 19 innings. He'll face the Brewers at home Sunday in his next start.

News
Pirates outfielder Starling Marte began Wednesday's game at Cincinnati on the bench before he had to replace Jose Tabata, who left the game after crashing into the outfield wall.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle wanted to give Marte a break after his second straight three-strikeout performance.

"I don't know if he's trying too hard, or if the swing is disconnected," Hurdle said of Marte, per MLB.com. "But the swing doesn't look right to me. I just think he needs a day off to rest himself mentally. So we'll back him away from the flame. We've been too soft at the top of the order."
