Padres outfielder Seth Smith went 2 for 3 with two walks and a solo home run in his team's 6-3 loss to the Rockies Wednesday.

Smith was 0 for 8 in his last two outings before smacking a pinch-hit double against the Rockies Tuesday, and that success carried over into Wednesday's homer-laden affair, as the two teams combined to knock seven balls over the outfield fence. Smith has hit .281/.383/.510 with 10 home runs and 27 RBI in 253 at-bats.

News
You may have seen that Padres third baseman Chase Headley collected four hits in Monday's game at Colorado and thought, "That's odd." It was. But what's even odder is it came just three games after another four-hit performance. He went the first three months without even a three-hit game.

So basically, in four July games, he's 12 for 26 (.462). Again, odd, but not entirely without explanation. Headley says he changed his grip a week ago, or about the time of this turnaround (if you could even call it that) began.

"I feel like it lets me be a little shorter to the ball, gives me a little more leverage," Headley said.

Now obviously, it's a small sample, and as Al Melchior pointed out on Tuesday's Fantasy Baseball Today, Headley is still contending with a back issue that may have a greater say in his performance than any sort of mechanical change. But the Headley we saw in the first three months, the one we presumed was ruined by the back issue, didn't seem capable of a four-hit game, much less two in one week.

I'm not rushing to pick him up or anything, but I think it's worth monitoring.

Over his first four starts covering 26 2/3 innings, Despaigne has allowed only four earned runs. He also owns a 0.98 WHIP and a 12:8 K:BB ratio over that span. His next start will likely come after the All-Star break.

Padres pitcher Joaquin Benoit took a loss Wednesday, giving up three earned runs on three hits, including two home runs, while striking out two in his team's 6-3 defeat against the Rockies.

Benoit (3-1) had surrendered just one home run all season going into Wednesday, but the Rockies swatted back-to-back home runs with one out in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and deliver Benoit his first loss. The reliever still owns a 1.91 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 43:7 K:BB ratio in 37 2/3 innings.

News
Padres pitcher Tyson Ross took a loss Tuesday, giving up just two earned runs on six hits in six innings and striking out six in his team's 2-1 defeat against the Rockies.

Ross (7-9) gave up a two-run home run in the third inning Tuesday, and it was enough to prevent him from evening his record at 8-8. He's turned in four straight quality starts, giving up no more than two earned runs in a game during that stretch, but he has just a 1-3 record to show for it. Ross owns a 2.93 ERA and 117:42 K:BB ratio in 122 2/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Dodgers Sunday.

News
The Padres will likely increase pitcher Jesse Hahn's innings limit during the second half of the season, MLB.com reports.

Hahn has pitched 73 innings this season between Double-A and the Padres. At spring training, he was initially targeted to pitch 110 innings after logging only 69 innings under Tampa Bay's farm system last year.

"Having him reach new thresholds is important for his growth as a pitcher," said Padres assistant general manager A.J. Hinch. "He's done a great job with the added workload."

Hahn will make his final start before the All-Star break Friday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
