News
Padres infielder Jedd Gyorko did his best to get his club a victory on Tuesday, though the Padres wound up falling to the Nationals 8-3. Gyorko went 2 for 4 with a pair of home runs and three RBI in the loss.

Gyorko hit a two-run blast in the second inning, which actually gave the Padres a 2-0 lead at the time. He later added a solo shot in the seventh, but by then it was too late to avoid the defeat.

The pair of longballs give Gyorko 10 for the season, which matches his total output from the 2014 season.

News
Padres starter Andrew Cashner pitched well against the Nationals on Thursday, but the Padres were unable to offer much in the way of offensive support. Cashner allowed three runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six, but the Padres dropped the game 4-2.

Cashner (5-13, 4.05 ERA) kept the Nationals scoreless over the first four innings, and the Padres gave him an early 1-0 lead. But he got into trouble in the fifth inninng, when he hit a batter with the bases load, and then gave up an RBI single. Cashner then gave up a solo home run to Jayson Werth in the sixth.

All-in-all, it wasn't a bad outing for Cashner. In five August starts, Cashner went 1-3 with a 3.72 ERA.

Justin Upton showed off his power stroke Wednesday, crushing two home runs to lead the Padres past the Nationals.

Upton connected for a two-run shot to left-center in the third inning to give the Padres a 4-0 advantage, and then hit a deep blast to center in the seventh to give San Diego a valuable insurance run.

Upton's first home runs since Aug. 10 give him 22 on the season.

Padres starter Tyson Ross did just enough to pick up a victory and even his record Wednesday, and for good measure, chipped in two hits in a win over the Nationals.

Ross gave up four runs over 6 1/3 innings -- the most earned runs he's allowed since June 15 -- but managed to work his way out of several jams to maintain the lead. Ross (9-9) struck out nine and walked two.

Ross went 2-for-2 in the game to raise his average to .244 on the season.
