Giants outfielder Hunter Pence (forearm) was not restricted while taking swings Friday, manager Bruce Bochy told reporters. Bochy added Pence could be ready to start a rehab assignment late next week, per CSN Bay Area.

"He was hitting off a tee, going to right (field), pulling the ball, hitting soft toss," Bochy said. "It was really amazing. He had incredible bat control today. He was going toward (the right-center portion of the cage) and every ball was to the same spot. It was pretty impressive."

News
The Giants outfield is getting more crowded with the news that Brandon Belt will see more time in left field, and manager Bruce Bochy indicated that Justin Maxwell will continue to receive regular playing time when Hunter Pence returns from the disabled list, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

"There’s no way you can take Maxwell out of the lineup right now," Bochy said. "You’ve got to find a place to put him, with the way he’s been swinging."

Maxwell, who homered Saturday, has hit .308/.400/.615 with three home runs and nine RBI in 39 at-bats. Bochy mentioned the possibility of Maxwell and Pence manning the corners while center fielder Angel Pagan gets days off here and there.

"I could keep them all going, keep them all fresh," Bochy said.

If everyone's healthy, it appears that Nori Aoki could see the starkest reduction in playing time, despite him posting a .303/.391/.382 line with five stolen bases in 76 at-bats while serving as the team's regular leadoff batter.

Susac, who also added a double, boosted his average to .385 with one RBI in 13 at-bats this season.

Rockies leadoff hitter Charlie Blackmon hit a second-inning solo homer against Heston.

Heston posted three strong starts to begin the season before Friday's shaky performance.

Heston's next start is set for Wednesday in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

Giants starter Tim Hudson got through seven innings Saturday night, but he would have to pitch a little better or go four more innings to have a shot at a victory.

Hudson performed well against Colorado, though, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts. His team required 11 innings to subdue the Rockies.

"I felt pretty good as the game went on," Hudson said after the game, per MLB.com. "That's kind of been the case the last few outings. I'm not sure why that it is. Maybe it's that these old bones start getting lubed up a little bit after the third or fourth inning."

The right-hander was victimized by the long ball, surrendering solo shots to Troy Tulowitzki in the third and Carlos Gonzalez in the sixth. He had only allowed one home run in 18 innings pitched previously this season. But he would have notched his first win had closer Santiago Casilla not blown a one-run lead in the ninth.

"He mixed his pitches well," Rockies outfielder Corey Dickerson said. "He threw strikes and got ahead of a lot of hitters. Some of us got ourselves out. You've got to have a better approach against a guy like that who's been around and is really crafty."

Hudson has pitched better than his 0-2 record indicates. He owns a decent 3.91 ERA that he will try to lower Friday night against the Angels.

Giants first baseman Brandon Belt will see more time in left field as manager Bruce Bochy looks for a way to get Belt and catchers Buster Posey and Andrew Susac in the lineup at the same time, CSN Bay Area reports.

Belt drew a start in left field last Sunday for the first time since 2012, and it appears he'll see more work in the outfield moving forward. However, the impending return of right fielder Hunter Pence could also create a playing-time crunch between Belt, Susac and outfielder Nori Aoki.

Giants pitcher Matt Cain is expected to begin playing catch next week, but it'll still be awhile before he returns to game action.

Cain is on the 15-day disable list with a forearm injury, but, according to a report by the San Francisco Chronicle, he's still "weeks from pitching".

Cain, who last pitched on July 9 of last season, may end up going 11 months between starts.

"My hope is that we're going to see the Matt Cain that we know," manager Bruce Bochy said, per CSN Bay Area. "It's going to be important for us to maybe slow-play this a little so we don't have another setback. He showed (good) signs before the last setback. I think we have a good chance of seeing the Matt Cain we know."

Giants manager Bruce Bochy knows the struggles of third baseman Casey McGehee. The veteran, who was moved to seventh in the batting order for Friday and Saturday's games, is hitting just .163 with a home run and two RBI in 43 at-bats. Bochy wants McGehee to get his confidence back, reports the Mercury News.

"We've got to get him to back off a little," Bochy said to CSN Bay Area. "Less is more. He's just trying so hard. You guys saw him (Friday night), he's taking it really hard. It's so early and we've got to get him going. He knocked in (76) runs last year. He can hit, and he's going to hit."

Giants closer Santiago Casilla has been shaky at times this season, but he had yet to blow a save.

That is, until Saturday.

Casilla was 5-for-5 when he entered with one out and the bases empty in the ninth against Colorado. He allowed successive singles to Nick Hundley and DJ LeMahieu before a fielder's choice tied the game. A caught stealing prevented further damage.

The left-hander has surrendered one run in three of his last seven appearances.

Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner allowed two earned runs on six hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings while striking out six but didn't factor into the decision in his team's 3-2 win over the Dodgers Wednesday.

Bumgarner blanked the Dodgers for six innings before surrendering a two-run homer to Alex Guerrero in the seventh. The Giants were still able to secure the victory thanks to a walkoff sacrifice fly by Joe Panik in the bottom of the ninth.

Bumgarner owns a 4.63 ERA and 17:4 K:BB ratio in 23 1/3 innings. He'll get a rematch with the Dodgers Monday.

Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong gave up two earned runs in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Dodgers.

Vogelsong went six innings and struck out five batters, walked one and surrendered three hits. This was Vogelsong's second start of the season and he earned a no-decision in it, keeping him at 0-1. After the game, manager Bruce Bochy announced Vogelsong will remain in the Giants' starting rotation.

"I thought he threw the ball well," manager Bruce Bochy said after the game, per CSN Bay Area. "He made a couple mistakes, but overall, I thought it was a real nice effort."

Vogelsong's other two appearances this year came as a reliever. Against the Dodgers, he gave up a run each in the first and second innings and then pitched a shutout over the next four.

Vogelson's ERA is now 7.71 for the season.
