Prior to spring training Jake Smolinski was not on anybody's radar, but a strong camp has put the outfielder in strong contention to be the Rangers' Opening Day left fielder, according to MLB.com.

Smolinski is hitting .333 this spring, with a home run, four doubles and a triple in 39 at-bats.

"I had some setbacks early in my career, some serious injuries," Smolinski said. "I battled back, struggled in the minors but just stuck with it and continued to get better."

Smolinski did get a Double-A call up last season, hitting .389 in 11 games, but broke a bone fouling a pitch off his left foot and missed two months.

News
The Rangers' roster is taking shape, and the big winners appear to be Ryan Rua and Delino DeShields Jr.

Rua will most likely be the starting left fielder for the Rangers, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Rua wrapped up the job by hitting .306 with eight RBI this spring.

Jake Smolinski will be the fourth outfielder. He hit .333 with five RBI. DeShields will win the last roster spot. DeShields hit .235. As a Rule V draft pick, he needs to stay on the Major League roster, or the team risks losing him.

The odd man out will be Carlos Peguero , despite hitting .333.

News
Rangers pitcher Derek Holland missed much of last season while recovering from knee surgery, and after an excellent stretch at the end of the season upon his return, the pitcher is eager to leave his health issues behind, MLB.com reports.

"In my case last year, the offseason hit and I wanted to keep playing," Holland said. "Now we get to start the season, and I've got all this energy and I'm ready to just let it go."

Holland delivered a 1.46 ERA and 25:5 K:BB ratio in 37 innings last September and has been limited to just three innings this spring due to a shoulder issue.

"I definitely want to prove a lot," Holland said. "Obviously, everybody thinks about my knee, how's that, am I going to be OK? I showed a little bit at the end of the season last year, and now I'm going to show you a lot more this year. I'm a lot stronger, a lot healthier, a lot better. I feel confident with everything. I want to be able to show the fans that whatever happened last year, it's over."

News
Rangers pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa is scheduled to pitch Friday, and the Rangers will be keeping a close eye on the pitcher to determine if he has fully recovered from Tommy John surgery or if he'll need time in the minors to open the season, MLB.com reports.

Fujikawa hasn't allowed a run in four Cactus League outings but has struggled a bit in two camp games. He remains confident his recovery is on track.

"This is still spring training, not the regular season," Fujikawa said. "It's only going to get better. Coming into spring training, the surgery was out of my mind. As a player, I am really confident. I am not sure what my role will be, but I'll be confident whatever the situation is."

Manager Jeff Banister is looking for the pitcher to build off his spring success.

"The guy is coming off Tommy John," Banister said. "There are good days and bad days. He has logged a couple of good ones. Let's see that continue."
