News
Rangers pitcher Wandy Rodriguez will draw the start for Friday's series-opening game against the Angels in Anaheim, the Dallas Morning News reports.

Ross Detwiler, who has posted a 10.95 ERA while going 0-2 in his first three starts, isn't being moved to the bullpen, but he'll throw some extra bullpen sessions before making his next start. Rodriguez isn't on the 40-man roster, so the team will have to clear spots on both the 25-man and 40-man rosters in order to bring him up for Friday's start.

Elbow - 15-day DL. Out until at least early May (Updated - 4/21/15)
News
The Rangers have voided their spring option on pitcher Nick Tepesch and placed him on the 15-day disabled list, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Tepesch was expected to miss a month at the beginning of April when he was experiencing elbow inflammation, a similar issue he dealt with in 2013 that caused him to miss six weeks. He will be a part of the major league roster once he's deemed healthy enough for action.

Manager Jeff Banister thinks Tepesch may have rushed to quickly to get back on the field and he may be rushing now to get back with the club, according to the Dallas Morning News.

"I still like the stuff," Banister said. "I think things snowballed a little on him. You'd like your guys to have a stress management routine for when the game speeds up, but it's going to happen to everybody. I still feel comfortable with Scheppers. The question: Do we back off a little? Maybe the next time we try to find something that is not such a high-stress situation."

Rangers pitcher Yovani Gallardo was stuck with a loss Wednesday, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk in five innings while striking out six in his team's 8-5 defeat against the Diamondbacks.

Gallardo (2-2) saw both unearned runs score in the second inning to put him in an early hole, and he exacerbated the deficit by giving up a single run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings, with one coming on a home run. He's put together a 3.92 ERA and 21:5 K:BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings over four starts.

Gallardo is slated to face the Mariners at home Monday.

Rangers outfielder Shin-Soo Choo is off to a slow start in 2015, compounding the offensive problems he had in his first season with Texas in 2014. Since signing with Texas, Choo is batting .234 with a .364 slugging percentage in 134 games.

"He's working really hard to find that rhythm and timing," manager Jeff Banister told MLB Network Radio on Wednesday. "He's been working hard, the stroke is fine. He'll break out."

News
The Rangers are a team that can use some good news on the injury front. And they're getting it in regard to starting pitcher Matt Harrison.

Harrison has lost virtually the last two seasons to injury and remains down. He and his team were worried that his back issue was career-threatening, but now they are claiming optimism that he could be back on the mound by July 1.

The left-hander threw a 75-pitch bullpen session Monday before voicing his enthusiasm.

"I'm almost to the impatient stage," he told the Dallas Morning News. "I feel like I'm really close. I'm still trying to take it day-by-day, but out there, they are long days.

Harrison, who is nearly a year removed from lower lumbar spinal fusion surgery, will throw an 80-pitch bullpen session Friday.

News
Rangers first baseman Prince Fielder homered Tuesday at Arizona for the first time since May 8 last season.

"I'm just here to drive in runs," said Fielder, who missed most of last season due to neck surgery. "Home runs are great a way to drive in multiple runs at one time, but as long as I'm hitting the ball hard and driving in runs I'm doing my job."

Now that Fielder has his first home run out of the way, Rangers manager Jeff Banister is confident the home runs could now come in bunches.

"He really hasn't got a whole lot of balls back-spun in the air, but tonight he did," Banister said, per MLB.com. "I know that everyone is wanting to see the power. We've wanted to see the power. It showed up tonight. My guess is that this gives him the confidence. I know he has been looking for his first one, too. He got it under his belt and that will give him the confidence to let the barrel go."

Even with one home run, Fielder is still slugging .509 through 14 games. He is batting .386 and has nine multihit games.

"I keep saying it, he's gone 9 1/2 months without playing baseball," Banister said. "I'm more impressed with how he's been swinging the bat and driving the ball from gap to gap, beating the shift."
