News
Nationals third baseman Yunel Escobar went a perfect 5 for 5 at the plate in Washington's 6-4 win over the Marlins on Monday.

Escobar collected five singles, including the go-ahead two RBI in the eighth inning off of Bryan Morris, scoring Tyler Moore and Denard Span.

"He doesn't get outside himself," manager Matt Williams said after the game, per MLB.com. "He understands situations. He understands what's needed in that given at-bat. He's got an idea of what the pitcher is going to do. He studies the hitters before him and simply has an approach when he goes up there. Those kinds of at-bats are at-bats that prolong innings. They get you wins like they did tonight."

Escobar boosted his average to .311 with seven RBI in 90 at-bats this season.

Nationals center fielder Denard Span is back in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets.

Span was out for two games while recovering from soreness in the same area of the body that required surgery before the season, but he's able to return to action Sunday as expected. He has hit .302/.340/.535 with two home runs, seven RBI and one stolen base in 43 at-bats.

The Nationals are underdogs (+100) against the Mets Sunday.

Janssen, who signed a one-year contract with the Nats in early February, has been out since March 23 with tendinitis in his right shoulder.

News
Ryan Zimmerman's hit streak now sits at seven games, after he went 1 for 4 in the Nationals' 1-0 victory over the Mets on Sunday. He also hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games, with seven RBI over that stretch.

Overall on the season, however, Zimmerman has had some struggles at the plate. He's batting just .222 with two home runs and a 19:6 K:BB ratio. He has adjusted nicely to first base, commiting just one error in 231 chances.

There were some concerns over Zimmerman's health, as he has been dealing with a bout of plantar fascia in his foot that has been causing some significant pain. But the 30-year-old has been playing through it, as he has played in every inning of every game for the Nationals in 2015.

News
For the first month of the season, run support has been hard to come by for Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer

On Friday, that rang true again. Scherzer had yet another exceptional night in a 4-0 loss to the Mets. Scherzer only gave up one earned run in the fourth inning on four hits. He threw 96 pitches and struck out 10 batters. He walked only one hitter.

However, this is the third time the Nationals have scored one run or fewer when Scherzer's started. Scherzer is now 1-3 this season.

Scherzer's next start is projected for May 6 against the Marlins.

News
Nationals pitcher Doug Fister has seen his average fastball velocity dip to 87.03 mph this season after his fastball sat at about 89 to 91 mph over the last four seasons, per Brooks Baseball. Fister indicated that he needs to become more consistent with his mechanics, the Washington Post reports.

"I’m really just dialing in the mechanics," Fister said. "There’s a flash or two of where I normally am during the game, but not consistently, and that’s what I’ve gotta get to. It’s a work in progress."

Fister, who has also had some issues with his sinker, was able to pitch 6 1/3 scoreless innings in his last start.

"I was staying back a little bit better, and that was a focus. Before, I was really getting out in front and my legs weren’t coming, I was just using all arm," Fister said. "That’s been a struggle all year long, and I’ve really tried to focus on, for a week or so, trying to take care of it."

Though Fister was able to avoid walking a batter for the first time this season, he didn't see an increase in velocity in the quality performance.

"(Velocity) is something I keep in the back of my head, just to gauge where I’m at, what I’m doing, but when I’m throwing my typical 86-88 sinker anyway, it’s all about location as opposed to velocity anyway," Fister said. "Yes, I’d love to make it better, but at this point I’ve got to deal with what I’ve got and it’s something I’m still trying to continue to get stronger for the year."

Fister is 2-1 with a 2.61 ERA and 14:9 K:BB ratio in 31 innings.

Foot - 15-day DL. May be out for season (Updated - 5/4/15)
News
Nationals outfielder Reed Johnson's season may be in jeopardy after foot/ankle surgery Monday, according to MASN Sports.

Johnson was dealing with a calf strain last week that forced him out of action and landed him on the DL. Manager Matt Williams said Monday he did not know if Johnson could return this season.

Johnson is hitting .222 with two RBI in 18 at-bats this season.

News
Nationals pitcher Jordan Zimmermann didn't see his average fastball velocity dip below 93.8 mph in any of his starts last season, but he's had to deal with a reduction in velocity this season, with his fastball averaging at least 93 mph just once in his six starts, per Brooks Baseball.

Despite the dip in velocity, Zimmermann doesn't seem concerned, the Washington Post reports.

"Don’t really care about velocity," Zimmermann said Monday. "As long as I make my pitch. You can throw 85 and make your pitch and get guys out up here, as long as you execute and mix it up. I’m sure it’ll come back later in the season. It’s just down a little bit right now."

The reduced velocity has led to more contact by hitters this season. However, Zimmermann feels that he's been improved in recent starts, and he expressed confidence in all three of his secondary pitches Monday night for the first time this season.

"I feel good," he said. "It was hit or miss early in the season, but I feel good now. Fastball command is there and breaking pitches are there, so I feel good."

Zimmermann saw his fastball velocity leap to its normal level against Atlanta on April 29, but it was back down Monday, when he worked seven innings of one-run ball. He's 2-2 with a 4.15 ERA and 22:6 K:BB ratio in 34 2/3 innings. He's striking out 5.7 batters per nine innings after posting an 8.2 K/9 rate in 2014.

There are bounce-back games and there are bounce-back games. Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez rebounded like Bill Russell on Saturday.

Gonzalez was coming off a defeat to Miami in which he allowed 10 hits and six runs in five innings when he pitched Saturday against the hot Mets. And he shut them out through seven, yielding six hits with no walks and nine strikeouts.

The left-hander gave up two hits and a walk in the first before settling down. He allowed more than one baserunner in an inning only once the rest of the way.

Gonzalez, whose ERA fell from 5.01 to 3.86, will seek to shrink it further Friday against Atlanta.

Gastrointestinal bleed - 15-day DL. Out until at least early May (Updated - 5/1/15)
News
Nationals reliever Felipe Rivero endured a miserable past couple of weeks.

According to The Washington Post's James Wagner, Rivero's gastrointestinal bleed was much worse than what was announced. Rivero said he threw up blood on April 21 after throwing just two pitches during a team event.

After alerting the team, it was discovered that Rivero had an ulcer that burst. He went to the hospital and had a procedure done to patch up his stomach lining. Rivero told The Post he's no longer feeling any pain.

“Sometimes I don’t feel well but I’m getting there,” Rivero said. “Little by little. [Sunday,] when I did flat ground, I was too tired. I did flat ground [Monday] and it was a little bit better. I wasn’t as tired.”

Rivero has appeared in only one game this season for the Nationals.
