News
Nationals pitcher Ross Detwiler was stuck with a loss Wednesday, allowing three earned runs on three hits and one walk in one inning while striking out one in his team's 3-1 defeat against the Braves.

Detwiler (2-3) loaded the bases in the sixth with his team up 1-0 and surrendering a three-run single to put the Braves ahead for good. It's the first time he's allowed runs in September after giving up seven earned runs in 10 1/3 innings in August. Detwiler owns a 4.11 ERA and 38:20 K:BB ratio in 61 1/3 innings.

News
Shortstop Ian Desmond was pretty much the entire offense for the Nationals in their shutout win Tuesday night in Atlanta.

Desmond slammed a two-run homer in the sixth to break a scoreless tie, then doubled in the ninth and tallied on a wild pitch as he had his hand in all of his team's runs. He improved his stat line to .252/.308/.423 in the process.

Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg bounced back with a gem Monday night against the Braves in Atlanta, improving to 12-11 on the year. The right-hander permitted five hits and no walks while striking out seven over seven scoreless innings of work.

Strasburg has not allowed a run in three of his last 10 starts. He owns a 3.34 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP over 32 starts (202 innings). His next start will come Saturday at Miami.

News
Nationals pitcher Tanner Roark earned a win Tuesday, giving up just five hits in seven scoreless innings while striking out four and walking none as the Nationals clinched the NL East crown with a 3-0 victory over the Braves.

Roark (14-10) had given up a home run in each of his four starts since tossing seven scoreless innings on Aug. 20, but he was able to keep the ball in the park and duplicate the excellent line Tuesday. He owns a 2.85 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 137:39 K:BB ratio in 192 1/3 innings. Roark is slated to face the Marlins Sunday in what should be penultimate start of the regular season.

News
Nationals right-hander Rafael Soriano, who recently took some time off to work on his mechanics, didn't help his chances of reclaiming the closer role in his second game back Monday at Atlanta.

While he entered in the ninth inning with the Nationals up by four -- sort of the closest thing to a save situation without being a save situation -- he needed Drew Storen, his replacement at closer, to bail him out with two outs and the tying run on base. In all, Soriano allowed two runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Manager Matt Williams recently said that having Soriano reclaim the closer role would be his best-case scenario, but as I wrote in the Fantasy Baseball Today blog, that scenario seems less likely now.

Frankly, I'd have no reservations about starting Storen in Fantasy, as good as he's been in the role.

Jordan Zimmermann tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Mets on Sunday, and the bullpen did the rest in a 3-0 shutout win for the Nationals. Zimmermann struck out five batters while allowing six hits and a walk, and Matt Thornton, Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen combined for the remaining 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

The outing was Zimmermann's 10th consecutive quality start, and it raised his record to 12-5 and improved his ERA to 2.83. His next start is scheduled for Friday at the Marlins.

The clinching of a division title Tuesday night could result in sweeping changes in the Nationals lineup Wednesday in Atlanta. Starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez has already been scratched in favor of Blake Treinen.

Treinen started five games in May and June with great success. He yielded just eight runs in 26 2/3 innings and owns a 2.35 ERA on the year despite a 1-3 record.

Nationals outfielder Steven Souza went 1 for 3 with a solo home run in his team's 3-1 defeat against the Braves Wednesday.

Souza entered the game just 1 for 15 in his first exposure to major-league pitching, but he was able to crank out his first career home run in the fifth inning to put the first run of the game on the board. The Nationals were not able to hold onto that lead, however.

News
Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos had trouble finding his power stroke early in the season, but has re-discovered it en-route to eight home runs over the last 30 games.

"I feel good right now," he told the Washington Post. "I feel my power is back. Right now, I feel like I'm hitting better because the last two weeks was a little bit of a struggle. I can't think about my [offense]. I have to go out there and call my game, and if I hit that's extra for a catcher."

Ramos had just three home runs through Aug. 4, a span of 48 games. However, he leads major-league catchers in long balls since, bringing his total to 11 for the season.

Nationals closer Drew Storen earned his seventh save Tuesday, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning to slam the door on the team's 3-0 win over the Braves and give the Nationals the team's second division title in three years.

Storen needed just seven pitches to make quick work of the Braves in the ninth inning Tuesday, and he's now delivered 15 scoreless innings since giving up his last earned run at the beginning of August. Storen owns a 1.23 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 42:11 K:BB ratio in 51 1/3 innings.

News
Nationals pitcher Blake Treinen didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, giving up three hits and one walk in five scoreless innings while striking out three in his team's 3-1 defeat against the Braves.

Treinen left with his team up 1-0 but watched the bullpen immediately blow the lead and fall behind in the sixth inning. He's given up a total of eight earned runs in 31 2/3 innings over his six starts, with his most recent start before Wednesday coming back in late June. Including his relief appearances, he's up to eight scoreless innings in September. Treinen owns a 1.94 ERA and 29:12 K:BB ratio in 46 1/3 innings. He's not yet scheduled for another start.
