Pistons waive forward Josh Smith
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(11:55 am ET) The Pistons announced they have waived forward Josh Smith on Monday.

"Our team has not performed the way we had expected throughout the first third of the season and adjustments need to be made in terms of our focus and direction," coach Stan Van Gundy said. “We are shifting priorities to aggressively develop our younger players while also expanding the roles of other players in the current rotation to improve performance and build for our future. As we expand certain roles, others will be reduced. In fairness to Josh, being a highly versatile 10-year veteran in this league, we feel it’s best to give him his freedom to move forward. We have full respect for Josh as a player and a person."

The Pistons signed Smith to a four-year, $54 million contract in 2013 and Smith is due $14 million each of the next two seasons.

Smith has struggled to fit into Stan Van Gundy’s system. In 28 games, Smith is averaging 13.1 points while shooting a career-low 39.1 percent from the floor.

With Smith's departure, forward Greg Monroe is expected to see an increase in minutes. Monroe is averaging 14.7 points and 8.8 rebounds in 29.0 minutes per game.

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(11:41 am ET) The Hornets announced center Al Jefferson is probable for Monday’s game against the Nuggets.

Jefferson sustained a left groin strain during Saturday’s game against the Jazz. In 27 games, Jefferson is averaging 19.2 points and 8.3 rebounds.

The Hornets are 2-point favorites over the Nuggets.

Spurs to keep Tiago Splitter out of back-to-back games for now
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(11:13 am ET) After sitting out the last game of the Spurs’ recent back-to-back games, center Tiago Splitter told reporters he is unsure how long the team will keep him out of back-to-back games, reports the San Antonio Express-News.

"Pop just tells me if I’m playing or not playing," Splitter said. "I think they’re just trying to be careful with me."

Splitter recently returned after missing 20 of the team’s first 21 games due to a calf injury.  The Spurs' next back-to-back set is Thursday against the Thunder and Friday at New Orleans.

In six games, Splitter is averaging 7.2 points and 4.3 rebounds.

Lakers' Kobe Bryant may miss upcoming games to rest body
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(10:48 am ET) After playing 38 minutes and hoisting up 30 shots during Sunday’s loss to the Kings, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant told reporters his body may require him to sit out some upcoming games in order to rest, reports Yahoo Sports.

"I don't have much of a choice if the body is feeling the way it's feeling right now," Bryant said, per Yahoo Sports. "You got to be smart. You got to make sure you get enough return on your investment. With the amount of work that I do and put into my body and to get my body ready, for it to be sore as it is right now, sometimes you do have to consider sitting down."

Bryant has not missed a game this season and is averaging 35.4 minutes. Lakers coach Byron Scott said Bryant’s struggles during Sunday’s game was a result of fatigue.

"We'll come up with a solution and try to figure out the next few games and what we want to do," Scott said.
