Rockets center Dwight Howard to get the night off
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:42 pm ET) Rockets center Dwight Howard will get the night off Wednesday, according to the Orlando Sentinel

Howard played Tuesday night, and the team doesn't want him to go back-to-back games just yet. Howard has dealt with some knee issues in camp, but has shown improvement lately. The club is probably just being cautious in order to keep Howard healthy for the regular season.

Grizzlies waive Earl Clark, Hassan Whiteside
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:31 pm ET) The Grizzlies have waived forward Earl Clark and center Hassan Whiteside Wednesday.

Both players were signed by the club in late September. Clark averaged 5.3 points in four preseason games. Whiteside averaged 3.4 points per game in five preseason contests.

Jazz waive forward Jack Cooley Wednesday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:27 pm ET) The Jazz have waived forward Jack Cooley, according to the Los Angeles Times

Cooley will likely be sent to the D-League. He'll make $65,000 there, according to the report. Cooley played in the Turkish league last season after leaving Notre Dame.

Jazz waive guard Dahntay Jones Wednesday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(4:58 pm ET) The Jazz have waived guard Dahntay Jones Wednesday.

Jones did not play in the NBA last season, but was signed by the club in September. Jones had seen his playing time dwindle in recent preseason games, and wasn't going to be a fit moving forward.

Nuggets guard Ty Lawson unable to practice Wednesday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(4:42 pm ET) Nuggets guard Ty Lawson did not practice Wednesday, according to the Denver Post

Lawson is questionable for the team's preseason finale Friday. The club could opt to play it safe and keep Lawson out in order to make sure he's ready for the regular season. Lawson is dealing with a hamstring injury.

Wizards' Bradley Beal no longer wearing a cast
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(4:36 pm ET) Wizards guard Bradley Beal was able to have his cast removed Wednesday.

Beal is expected to miss six weeks due to a wrist fracture, but has expressed some optimism that he'll return to the court quickly. While getting his cast off doesn't improve his timetable, it's the first step toward Beal making his return. Beal averaged 17.1 points per game with the club last season.

Lakers' Jordan Hill thriving under new staff
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(4:31 pm ET) Lakers forward Jordan Hill said he probably would not have returned to the club had Mike D'Antoni been retained, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

"If Mike was here, I wouldn’t be back," Hill said. "That’s the way it was. No disrespect to Mike, but apparently I didn’t fit his system." Hill also admitted he had to refocus his efforts during the offseason. By cutting alcohol out of his diet, Hill lost 13 pounds, and feels as though he has more energy. "Now I feel really, really good," he said. "I can run and down more often. My wind is back. My body feels good. I feel like I could go for days."

Coach Byron Scott seems to be happy with the improvements, saying Hill can put up "career numbers again this year."

Heat forward Josh McRoberts could miss time early
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(4:24 pm ET) Heat forward Josh McRoberts is still worried about being sidelined at the beginning of the regular season, according to the Sun Sentinel

McRoberts had toe surgery in the offseason, and knew missing a part of the regular season would be a possibility. "I wouldn't use the word surprised," McRoberts said. "A surgery like this takes a while. I knew it was a probability." McRoberts is not expected to play in the team's preseason finale Friday due to the issue.

He's also been limited by a back injury during camp, and has not been practicing. McRoberts admitted the process has been frustrating, but said the team's training staff is doing everything it can in order to get him back on the court.

Pistons PG Spencer Dinwiddie ready to roll
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:48 pm ET) Pistons rookie point guard Spencer Dinwiddie has fully recovered from knee surgery and is ready for the Thursday night preseason finale against Philadelphia.

Dinwiddie, who sustained the injury as a junior at the University of Colorado, was selected by Detroit in the second round. He understands that he is about to begin quite a learning process.

"Obviously I'm going to make mistakes and obviously I haven't played in quite a bit of time, but I think I've done pretty well in practice - obviously enough for him to let me play and not shut me down or anything," he told the Detroit Free Press on Wednesday. "I think that's a good sign and I'm going out there to play to win."

Thibodeau: Swelling down on thumb of Bulls G Jimmy Butler
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3:13 pm ET) Tom Thibodeau said Wednesday that the sprained thumb of Bulls guard Jimmy Butler has progressed, per Comcast SportsNet Chicago. Thibodeau stated the swelling has lessened and added that Butler will be re-examined "in a week or so."

The status of Butler for the Oct. 29 regular season opener against the host Knicks remains unsettled.
