Batum shut down for the season : Trail Blazers forward Nicolas Batum will miss the team's final two games of the season due to a right shoulder injury, his agent told CSNNW.com. Batum, who had missed the past six games due to soreness in his right shoulder, met with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Monday, who recommended resting the injury. “He'll be healthy soon,” Ndiaye said. “He just needs to get some rest. The good news is there is no surgery needed. We were glad to hear that.”

The good news is Batum won't need surgery and he is expected to be fully healthy heading into the 2013-14 season. The 24-year-old forward appeared in 73 games this year and averaged career-highs in points (14.3), rebounds (5.6), assists (4.9), steals (1.2), blocks (1.1) and minutes (38.5). However, his lingering wrist and shoulder injuries hampered his production down the stretch and prevented him from possibly turning in a breakout campaign. Still, Batum proved to be a very productive option as a full-time starter and we don't see any reason why that trend won't continue next year. As long as he is healthy, owners should plan on targeting Batum in the middle rounds in all draft formats next fall.

| Nicolas Batum's fourth season in the league was his most productive as he averaged a career-best 13.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in 59 contests for the Trail Blazers. He was finally able to secure a spot in the starting lineup in the second half of the season and averaged nearly 34 minutes a game following the All-Star break. While it looked like the 23-year-old was headed to Minnesota, the Trail Blazers decided to match the Timberwolves' offer sheet. Batum made it known that he really wanted to play in Minnesota, although the fact that he is staying in Portland could actually be more beneficial to his Fantasy value. The Trail Blazers are in full rebuilding mode and they have totally turned over their roster. That means the club will rely on the likes of Lamarcus Aldridge and Batum for the majority of the scoring, especially during the early part of the season. Batum has already been able to increase his scoring in each of his first four years in the league and also averaged 1.8 3-pointers per game last season, while shooting 39 percent from behind the arc. With the promise of an increased role and the ability to fill up a stat sheet, Batum looks to be a prime candidate for a breakout season. Consider him a viable starting option in most formats worthy of a mid-round selection on Draft Day next fall. (Updated 8/22/12) |
