Thunder G Russell Westbrook wins NBA Cares Community Assist Award

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(5/19/15) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook has been chosen as the 2014-15 NBA Cares Community Assist Award recipient, the NBA announced.

The award is given annually to the player that best exhibits a passion for the game of basketball while also helping the community.

In 2012, Westbrook launched Westbrook's Why Not? Foundation, which provides support for children facing hardships.

"As a child, my brother and I were taught to challenge adversity by working harder and asking ourselves 'why not?'" Westbrook said. "The Why Not? Foundation aims to empower children to overcome their own obstacles and provide them with opportunities to reach their full potential."

Thunder's Durant, Westbrook offer support for Scott Brooks

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(4/16/15) With the Thunder reportedly contemplating whether to bring back coach Scott Brooks next season, forward Kevin Durant said Brooks does not deserve blame for the team missing the playoffs for the first since 2008-09, reports The Oklahoman.

"He rallied us, made sure we were all emotionally stable," Durant said.

Guard Russell Westbrook agreed with Durant that Brooks did the best job possible.

"As a coach and as a friend, I think he does a great job," Westbrook said.

Durant added that he was disappointed he wasn't able to finish the season to help the team due to his foot injury.

"I'm definitely pissed," he said. "I can't wait for the first game [next season]."
