Small forward still in Williams' plans: Timberwolves forward Derrick Williams worked hard last offseason to lose weight, with the intention of playing more small forward next to All-Star power forward Kevin Love. Unfortunately, Williams barely saw time in that role (just one percent of the team's total minutes, per 82games.com), as Love's season ended after 18 games due to a series of injuries to his hand. Still, Williams has made significant improvements to his game in his second season, improving his three-point stroke and averaging 11.7 points per game with 5.5 rebounds through 78 games. Coach Rick Adelman told the Star-Tribune Thursday that he thinks Williams still has a future next to Love in the starting lineup. "Thats something were still going to look at," Adelman said. "I think he can play there, but its about understanding what you have to do at each position. If hes playing small forward, he has to be aggressive and go to the basket and post up." | Fantasy Analysis |
Williams has had little success working out of the post this season, with just 4.4 percent of his possessions defined as post-ups by MySynergySports.com. He is shooting just 33.3 percent on his 30 post-up shots. Williams has developed a better jump shot, which should help him in any move towards the shorter end of the lineup spectrum; he is shooting 32.8 percent on three-pointers, compared to just 26.8 percent as a rookie. Williams has been disappointing overall for a No. 2 overall pick, and trade rumors continue to circle around him heading into his third season. If he stays in Minnesota, Fantasy owners will likely want to consider him just a late-round Fantasy option on Draft Day, though one who still has considerable upside. (Updated 4/11/13). |
| Derrick Williams' rookie campaign was mired with inconsistency as the second overall pick from the 2011 Draft really struggled to settle into his role with the Timberwolves. The 21-year-old spent much of last season backing up Kevin Love at power forward and averaged 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds while seeing just over 21 minutes per game. He really struggled with his shot at times as he made just 41 percent of his field goal attempts and 26.8 percent of his shots from behind the arc. However, Minnesota will change the way Williams is used this upcoming season. He is expected to log most of his minutes at small forward during the 2012-13 campaign and has spent the past few months shedding 15 pounds off his frame while working on his game. Williams will likely spend the first month of the season filling in for Kevin Love as the starting power forward, however, as Love is expected to miss six weeks following a broken knuckle in his shooting hand. The former University of Arizona standout averaged 11.5 points and 5.7 rebounds in the 15 games he started last year and could be in for a sizable bump in production if he is able to hold down the starting spot. However, the fact that he is still unproven continues to limit his value. Fantasy owners should consider Williams a low-end option worthy of targeting in the mid-to-late rounds in most formats. Just keep in mind he does have some nice upside. (Updated 10/20/12) |
