Vasquez shows growth in third year : Despite finishing second in voting behind Paul George for the NBA's Most Improved Player Award, Pelicans guard Greivis Vasquez was happy with the improvement he showed in his game this year. Vasquez averaged a career-best 13.9 points, 9.0 assists and 4.3 rebounds on 43.3 percent shooting from the field. His 25 double-doubles led the team and he also notched the first triple-double of his career. "It was a good step forward for myself,'' Vasquez told the Times Picayune. "As a player, you want to gain respect knowing that youre a winner. Next year, my biggest thing is to lead this team to win. When I do that, Ill be very proud. It was a good accomplishment. (But) second is always the best loser. Im not really happy or proud of that.'' (Updated 4/23/13) |

| Fantasy Analysis |
While Vasquez showed some flashes of his potential during his first two years in the league, his game game grew by leaps and bounds this season. The 26-year-old not only posted career highs in almost every major offensive category, but also established himself as a high-end Fantasy option. Vasquez averaged 110.7 Fantasy points per week in all standard formats this season, finishing as the 11th highest scoring guard, in terms of Fantasy points, at his position in those formats. He also finished as the 42nd highest scoring player in all Rotisserie leagues and most feel he hasn't even come close to reaching his ceiling yet. Fantasy owners should plan on targeting Vasquez in the middle rounds of all formats on Draft Day next fall. (Updated 4/23/13). |
| Greivis Vasquez had some shining moments in the 2011-12 season for the Hornets after coming over from Memphis the season prior. Coming to a team in need of a spark and solid point guard play, Vasquez provided that, at times at least. There were stretches were he seemed to be a triple-double waiting to happen, but finished the year averaging 8.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game over 25.8 minutes. He started 26 games, but figures to come off the bench next year with Jarrett Jack healthy and Austin Rivers coming into the picture. Unless Vasquez can learn to avoid the turnovers and starts seeing more consistent production, he's only going to be a viable Fantasy option in the deeper formats. (Updated 8/22/12) |
