Shved looking for consistency in second year : Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman implored guard Alexey Shved to push through the "rookie wall" at the end of this season, and hopefully that experience will serve Shved well moving forward. Shved finished his rookie season averaging 8.6 points and 3.7 assists per game, however he struggled mightily as the season went on; he averaged just 6.0 points per game after the All-Star break. Shved clearly has the skills to be a productive member of an NBA backcourt, but the question to be answered will be whether he can coexist off the ball next to Ricky Rubio. If not, Shved is going to be forced to stay in a reserve role moving forward. Shved shot 29.5 percent from three-point range and 37.2 from the field overall, both numbers he will need to improve upon moving forward. Shved has some upside heading into his second year, but the way the Wolves' roster is set up, he is unlikely to be more than just a low-end Fantasy reserve, worth targeting in the late rounds on Draft Day next season. (Updated 4/24/13). |
| After spending the last six seasons playing in Russia, Alexey Shved decided to bring his talents to America and signed with the Timberwolves over the summer. The 23-year-old, who is listed at 6-6, is considered a combo guard and could wind up playing both guard spots as well as small forward in some cases. He averaged 11.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists with CSKA Moscow -- the same team Andrei Kirilenko played for last season -- and was named the 2012 BEKO PBL Playoffs MVP after leading his club to the Russian National Championship. The initial scouting reports suggest Shved's style of play is very similar to Ricky Rubio's as he is considered a good ballhandler with good court vision. However, he is a much better shooter than Rubio is as he shot 48 percent from the field during his last year in Russia while knocking down 49 percent of his jumpers from behind the arc. While Shved likely won't start right away for Minnesota, he should be able to work his way into coach Rick Aldelman's rotation during the early part of the season, especially with Rubio expected to be out until at least December. However, because he is still unproven at this level, only owners deeper formats should consider taking a flier on Shved on Draft Day. (Updated 8/27/12) |
