|Allen Crabbe fighting for a role |
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
(10/13/13) Trail Blazers rookie Allen Crabbe, a rookie selected with the first pick of the second round in this year's draft, has a chance to earn a rotation spot this season. Thanks to an injury suffered by fellow rookie CJ McCollum, Crabbe could come off the bench this season and provide some shooting and defense for a unit that really struggled a year ago.
"Allen's had a very good camp, particularly at the defensive end," coach Terry Stotts told The Oregonian. "He makes a lot of good defensive reads. He understands what we want to get done within our defensive concepts. Obviously when we drafted him, he was known as a shooter and a scorer. But I think what he’s done defensively has probably been the most impressive part so far."
Crabbe is battling with Will Barton for a spot in the rotation. Barton got the start in Friday's preseason game against the Jazz, and Crabbe struggled coming off the bench. He scored just two points on 1 of 6 shooting. Crabbe is shooting 39.1 percent from the field in three preseason games, while averaging 7.3 points per game.
