Injuries weighed heavily on Nene: Wizards center Nene said he agonized over a persistent foot injury so much this season that he considered retirement, the Washington Post reports. Nene managed just 61 games this season due to a painful bout of plantar fasciitis in his left foot that never fully healed and a sore right knee. "How tough? Tough enough to think about the end of my career? Yeah, thats how tough it was," he said Sunday. "It was so hard to play the way I did it. I thought to end my career because its so painful, my body cant support. Im glad I finished the season, but the way I suffer, I hope, never again." (Updated 4/15/13) |

Knee, foot - Out for season (Updated - 4/14/13) |
| Fantasy Analysis |
Nene ruled himself out for the Wizards' final two games of the season and hopes rest during the offseason will help him stay healthy next year. "To play through pain, thats not necessary," the 30-year-old Nene said. "Let the young guys play. They need the work." During his first full season with Washington, Nene averaged 12.6 points per game -- his lowest mark since the 2006-07 season (minimum 20 games). Fantasy owners should follow his recovery during the offseason as his draft stock could tumble if he's not 100 percent. (Updated 4/15/13). |
| Nene experienced a whirlwind four months following the NBA lockout last year. The 6-foot-11 center went from one of the most coveted free agents on the market before re-signing with Denver to evolving into a trade chip for the team. Nene, who was constantly hampered by a heel issue with the Nuggets, was packaged to Washington as part of a three-team deal in March. His injury woes carried over to the Wizards as he missed more games (12) than he played (11) with his new team. Now healthy after a run with Brazil in the Summer Olympics, Nene will attempt to return to his standing as one of the top big men in the league this season. But he will be joined in the frontcourt by Emeka Okafor after Washington obtained him from New Orleans, and could be destined for a rotation in the middle -- unless Okafor plays out of position. Despite his limited playing time with the Wizards, Nene nearly matched his total number of double-doubles over the last five weeks of the season (three) as he recorded with the Nuggets (five). Washington has been seeking stability from its big men in recent years and Nene is capable of reaching double figures in points and rebounds on a nightly basis. His value has been dented after last year, but he should still be targeted as a borderline No. 1 Fantasy center in all drafts this season. (Updated 8/21/12) |
