Knicks' Carmelo Anthony on tanking: It's a 'bad mentality to have'

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1/22/15) After notching back-to-back wins for the first time since Nov. 2, Knicks small forward Carmelo Anthony told reporters that tanking is a "bad mentality to have," per ESPN on Thursday.

"I don't know how to have that mindset," Anthony said. "Having that mindset as a basketball player, as a competitor, it's just hard to do unless you don't care about the game, what happens and your performance. To say that we're going to go out there and we want to lose a basketball game, I think that's a bad mentality to have."

Anthony's Knicks defeated the 76ers 98-91 on Wednesday to improve to 7-36, which is still the worst record in the NBA. It was his third straight game back from left knee soreness. He has averaged 25.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest since his six-game absence.

Anthony indicated that surgery will be needed at some point to alleviate the soreness in his knee, though that still remains to be seen. Team president Phil Jackson told reporters recently that playing in the All-Star Game at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 15 is important to Anthony.

"I think the most important thing is just a matter of how much work I've been able to put in with my overall body these two weeks," Anthony said. "So that's kind of what's getting me through right now, not having to compensate my knee, and everything else is feeling good."
