Cavaliers G J.R. Smith bares his soul in written article
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(4/16/15) Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith refuted his reputation as selfish, compared former teammate Carmelo Anthony with LeBron James and defended embattled Cleveland forward Kevin Love in an article he wrote himself for The Cauldron.
Smith also came across as thoughtful in expressing his feelings about a shocking midseason that sent him from New York to Cleveland. But it was his defense of his character that stood out in the long piece.
"There have been unfair rumors that lead people to have misconceptions about me: that I don't care; that I don't take my job seriously; that I'm not committed to my craft," Smith wrote. "It's unfortunate, but people have been saying this about me during my entire career. It obviously bothers me and naturally would bother anyone to feel that people don't take you serious as a person. ... (after getting to know me) someone tells me I am a completely different person than who they perceived me to be."
Smith went on to write that Anthony is a pure scorer who has never had the luxury to play alongside the quality players afforded James or Kobe Bryant, but that he yearns to win as much as the other two. Smith concluded his piece by defending Love, whose numbers have fallen off considerably this year after a trade brought him from Minnesota.
"Forget what anyone says, Kevin Love is the ultimate teammate," Smith wrote. "He isn't the most athletic player out there - actually, Kevin is like that guy you see in a 40-and-up league just killing it because he knows the game better than anyone else out there. Mentally, Love is just in another stratosphere when it comes to understanding basketball. Plus, not only is he an underrated shooter who can knock down shots better than half the guards in the league, he is also the best rebounder I have played with, hands down."

Cavs G J.R. Smith scores 23 in win over Bucks
|by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com|
|(3/22/15) Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith scored 23 points in Sunday afternoon's 108-90 victory over the Bucks.
Smith played 37 minutes and went 8 of 11 from the field. Included were seven made three-pointers out of nine attempts. Smith hit three three-pointers in a row midway through the fourth quarter.
This is the fourth time in the past 13 games that Smith has scored over 20 points.
Smith also had four rebounds, three steals and one assist.
|There were some concerns around the league about how J.R. Smith would handle himself in his first season following a big contract, and those came to fruition last season. Smith recovered slowly from offseason knee surgery, and that was only after his season got off to a delayed start following a five-game suspension from the league. Smith shot just 38.9 percent from the field en route to a 13.0 points-per-game average prior to the All-Star break, before salvaging his season somewhat with hot shooting in the second half. Smith ended up seeing his scoring average fall from 18.1 points per game in 2012-13 to 14.5 last season, though he did actually up his assists to 3.0 per game as he took on a bit more playmaking duties. All in all, Smith proved himself to be difficult to rely on, both for the Knicks and for his Fantasy owners. His scoring ability is too great to ignore, but he should probably be left until the later rounds on Draft Day in most formats.
