J.R. Smith scores game-high 21 in Cavaliers' loss
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(2/27/15) J.R. Smith scored a game-high 21 points on seven-of-17 shooting as the Cavaliers lost to the Pacers, 93-86, Friday.
Smith hit four of his six 3-pointers, the twelfth time in 24 games with the Cavs that he's knocked down at least three shots from long-range. He added four assists.
Smith's performance wasn't enough, as the Cavaliers were playing without LeBron James, given the night off to nurse a sore back, and Kyrie Irving, who had a shoulder strain.
"A game like tonight, missing Kyrie and missing LeBron, we needed to make open shots over the top because we didn't have the normal kind of penetration,'' said coach David Blatt.
The Cavs next play at the Rockets on Sunday.
Cavs' David Blatt: J.R. Smith has been a 'godsend'
|by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com|
|(2/22/15) Cavaliers coach David Blatt offered high praise for guard J.R. Smith on Saturday. Blatt admires Smith's willingness to learn the team's system and his ability to be an effective scorer and solid defender, reports ESPN.
"J.R. Smith has been a dream for us, as a team and for me personally," Blatt said. "I love the guy. I love coaching him. He comes to work every single day, he's a great teammate, he's playing both ends of the court for us consistently. He's one of the main reasons for our turnaround, together with [Iman Shumpert], who simply started later because of the injury. Those guys, honestly, they've been a godsend. They really have."
Smith struggled earlier in the year while playing with the Knicks, but said he's had an easy adjustment playing in the Cavaliers' offense.
"It's just much easier to play. The style of basketball that we play suits my game. Run and gun, shoot open shots, play defense, just play," Smith said.
J.R. Smith on new role with Cavs: "All I got to do is spot up and shoot'
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(2/14/15) Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith told reporters during the All-Star break that his transition to Cleveland has been easy, according to Brett Pollakoff of NBC Sports.
"All I got to do is spot up and shoot jump shots," Smith said at an even in New York City.
After averaging 10.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in 24 games (six starts) for the Knicks, Smith is averaging 12.7 points and 3.0 rebounds in 20 games (19 starts) with the Cavs. He is also making 2.7 3-pointers per game, as opposed to 1.3 per game with New York.

Melo on J.R. Smith's transition to Cavs: 'He looks comfortable out there'
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(1/22/15) It's not hard to see Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith has played a tad better since his acquisition from the Knicks.
After averaging 10.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in 24 games for the Knicks, Smith is averaging 14.6 points and 3.5 rebounds in eight games with the Cavs. He is also making 2.8 3-pointers per game, as opposed to 1.3 per game with New York.
One person who has noticed Smith's uptick in production has been former teammate Carmelo Anthony.
“He’s playing well,” Anthony said Wednesday morning, per ESPN. “I know what type of game he has and what he can do, so he looks comfortable out there, he looks like he’s settling in very well. I’m actually happy for him.
"It’s a change of environment for him, new thought process, new mind set. Mentally he looks like he has some clarity right now. I believe LeBron [James] will help him make that adjustment that much better.”
|There were some concerns around the league about how J.R. Smith would handle himself in his first season following a big contract, and those came to fruition last season. Smith recovered slowly from offseason knee surgery, and that was only after his season got off to a delayed start following a five-game suspension from the league. Smith shot just 38.9 percent from the field en route to a 13.0 points-per-game average prior to the All-Star break, before salvaging his season somewhat with hot shooting in the second half. Smith ended up seeing his scoring average fall from 18.1 points per game in 2012-13 to 14.5 last season, though he did actually up his assists to 3.0 per game as he took on a bit more playmaking duties. All in all, Smith proved himself to be difficult to rely on, both for the Knicks and for his Fantasy owners. His scoring ability is too great to ignore, but he should probably be left until the later rounds on Draft Day in most formats.
