Williams expects big things next year : Despite being eliminated by the Bulls in Game 7 of the first-round of the playoffs, Nets guard Deron Williams said he expects Brooklyn to take a step forward next year. Williams averaged 18.9 points and 7.7 assists over 78 games and helped lead the Nets to the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference. “I think we got better as the season went on,” Williams told the New York Post. “Personally just because of injuries and once I got healthy, people saw a little bit of what I can do, and so I look forward to building on that.”

| Fantasy Analysis |
Williams struggled with ankle issues for much of the first half of the season and averaged 16.7 points and 7.6 assists on 41.3 percent shooting from the field and 34.7 percent shooting from 3-point range before the All-Star break. However, received platelet-rich plasma treatment in addition to another cortisone injection over the break and averaged 22.9 points and 8.0 assists on 48.1 percent shooting and 42 percent from 3-point range over the second half of the year. While Williams still managed to finish as the eighth highest-scoring fantasy guard, in terms of Fantasy points, in all standard formats, his slow start did not sit well with most owners. However, we would expect Williams to be 100 percent heading into training camp next year, which would make him worth targeting in the very early rounds of all draft formats next fall.

| It was never a sure thing, and at times it seemed incredibly unlikely, but the Nets ultimately convinced Williams to join them in their move to Brooklyn, and this time he actually has help. Deron Williams was asked to carry a woeful team last season, but the Nets traded for Joe Johnson while returning Gerald Wallace and Brook Lopez to the fold, two players who played just 21 games with the Nets last season. That should make William's life immeasurably easier, as he was simply asked to do too much last season, which led to career lows in shooting percentage (40.7) and turnovers (4.0), while also registering fewer than 9.0 assists per game for the first time since his rookie season. With a re-tooled roster surrounding him, Williams should find the floor much more open, making him an even more dangerous option. He is one of the five best guards in all of Fantasy, and should be handled as such in drafts. (Updated 8/21/12) |
