Cassell retires, to be asst. coach

(5/22/09) Sam Cassell, who won three NBA titles in a 15-season career, announced his retirement as a player Thursday and immediately joined the coaching staff of the Washington Wizards. Cassell and Randy Wittman, the former head coach of Cleveland and Minnesota, were hired as assistants to new Wizards coach Flip Saunders. "After 15 seasons playing in this league, I have accomplished all that I have dreamed of as a player," Cassell said. "Now the time has come for to me to take my love for the game to the coaching ranks and pass on what I've learned. This team is loaded with talent, and it's a great way for me to start my coaching career."

Cassell waived by Sacramento

(2/19/09) The Kings acquired four players in a deal that sent starters Brad Miller and John Salmons to Chicago Wednesday. The Kings received Andres Nocioni, Drew Gooden, Cedric Simmons and Michael Ruffin from Chicago. The Kings then sent Ruffin to Portland for Ike Diogu. To make room for the incoming players, the Kings waived Quincy Douby and Sam Cassell, the guard acquired from Boston on Tuesday.

Cassell traded to Kings

(2/17/09) The Sacramento Kings have acquired veteran guard Sam Cassell from the Boston Celtics for a conditional second-round draft pick in 2015. The 39-year-old Cassell hasn't played this season for the Celtics, who acquired him in early March before their run to the NBA title. He essentially served as another assistant coach this season with Boston, which also sent cash considerations to Sacramento in the trade. The deal on Tuesday also decreases Boston's luxury tax obligations for the season. The Kings, who have the NBA's worst record at 11-43, didn't immediately announce whether Cassell would join the team or be released. Sacramento hosts the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night. Cassell has won three NBA championships during his 16 seasons in the league.

Celtics with three games in Week 1

(10/25/08) The Boston Celtics will play the Cleveland Cavaliers (Oct. 29), the Chicago Bulls (Oct. 31) and the Indiana Pacers (Nov. 1) in Week 1 (Oct. 27-Nov.2) of the Fantasy Basketball season. The defending champions get a tough matchup to start the season against a Cavaliers team that allowed just 96.7 points per game last season. But things get easier after that. The Bulls ranked 16th in the NBA (100.4 ppg) and the Pacers ranked 26th (105.4) and have don't have Jermaine O'Neal any more. Instead, Troy Murphy and Rasho Nesterovic man the low post.

Cassell sits out the preseason

(10/23/08) The Boston Globe notes that veteran point guard Sam Cassell sat out the entire preseason, contributing as an unofficial assistant coach. But he says he's ready for the start of the season. "If my number is called, I'm ready," Cassell said. "I am keeping [the other players] sharp. I've been doing this for a while, it's not something that just started." Cassell's advice for Pruitt? "Play the game," Cassell said. "He'll be all right. They have been grooming him the whole year. He took his lumps last year and now he's ready to perform and make a statement for himself. He understands he belongs out there. This year he has a swagger and he's ready."
