Joel Freeland passes postseason test

(4/17/2014) Trail Blazers forward Joel Freeland proved himself ready for the playoffs Wednesday, as he returned from a two-month absence due to a knee injury. Freeland played 18 minutes in the game, scoring six points and adding seven rebounds and two assists in the 110-104 win.

After the game, coach Terry Stotts told NBA.SI.com he has no reservations about relying on Freeland in the team's upcoming playoff series against the Rockets, though he will have to play with a knee brace.

Freeland finished the regular season averaging 3.3 points and 3.9 rebounds in 52 games, appearing in one more contest than his rookie season.

(4/12/2014) Trail Blazers forward Joel Freeland has been sidelined by a bad knee for more than two months, but he is nearing a return as the playoffs loom. Freeland told The Columbian Saturday he could be back on the floor Sunday against the Warriors, and will be a game-time decision.

Freeland was one of the team's primary backups prior to the injury, averaging 3.3 points and 3.9 rebounds in 51 games.

(3/27/2014) Trail Blazers center Joel Freeland was able to do a light workout prior to Thursday's game agains the Hawks according to The Oregonian, as he continues to work his way back from a knee injury.  Freeland has been out since Feb. 11 due to the injury, and is still likely a few weeks away from returning. He is hoping to be back in time for the playoffs.

Freeland has been sidelined since Feb. 11 with the injury. No timetable has been set. He is averaging 3.3 points and 3.9 rebounds over 51 games played.

(2/12/2014) Trail Blazers center Joel Freeland has been diagnosed with an MCL sprain in his right knee and is expected to miss four-to-eight weeks of action, Comcast SportsNet Northwest reports.

Freeland played just two minutes Tuesday before exiting in the first quarter with the knee injury, and an MRI Wednesday revealed the extent of the damage. He has averaged 3.3 points and 3.9 rebounds over 51 games played.

The team gave no further information on the injury, making his status for Wednesday's game against the Clippers unknown.

 


Trail Blazers backup bigs doing very little

(1/24/2014) The Trail Blazers continue to receive little production from their reserve big men, as Thomas Robinson and Joel Freeland combined for just four points off the bench in a 110-105 win over the Nuggets Thursday. 

Freeland was held scoreless in his nine minutes of work, as he missed a pair of field goals and snagged just one rebound. Robinson was hardly better, scoring four points on 1 of 2 shooting, with five rebounds, one assist and two steals in 10 minutes. 

Neither player has been contributing much at all overall, with Freeland averaging just 3.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game in January and Robinson contributing only 3.6 points and 3.1 rebounds.

(12/15/2013) Trail Blazers center Joel Freeland enjoyed a decent performance off the bench during Saturday's win over the 76ers in Philadelphia. He scored eight points on 4 of 6 shooting from the field. He also added three rebounds, one assist and one block while logging 15 minutes of game action in a 139-105 victory.

Freeland has been held to single-digit scoring in all 23 games played this season. He is averaging 3.2 points and 3.4 rebounds over his last five.

Freeland had missed Tuesday's game because of the injury. He is expected to come off the bench and will have his minutes "slightly" monitored. Freeland has not scored more than five points in a game this season.

(10/25/2013) Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts told The Oregonian after Thursday's preseason finale that second-year big man Joel Freeland has leapfrogged over Meyers Leonard in the depth chart, earning a spot in the rotation as the backup center.

Freeland logged 15 minutes off the bench while Leonard only played the final three minutes of the game.

"The role that he has, he's earned a lot of respect from his teammates and the coaches by how he's impacted the game defensively," Stotts said. "He had two rim protections tonight, made an impact on the game. We need defense out of that position, and Joel's earned that."


Trail Blazers injuries still a concern

(10/13/2013) The Trail Blazers welcomed two injured players back into the fold at practice Sunday. In what was described by coach Terry Stotts as a "light" session, Earl Watson (calf) and Dorell Wright (finger) were both able to participate.

"Slowly but surely they are coming back. Today was a relatively light day, a lot of teaching, recovering a little bit," Stotts told The Columbian. "Tomorrow should be a really competitive practice."

Of course, the oft-injured Blazers couldn't get two players back without losing another. Joel Freeland left practice with a figure injury, the extent of which is not yet known.

(3/21/2013) Trail Blazers forward Joel Freeland tore a ligament in his right index finger Tuesday against the Bucks, a re-aggravation of an injury from earlier in the season. “It feels just like when I first injured it,” Freeland told CSNNW.com. “It affects the way I shoot and I just took off the wrap I've been wearing a few days ago because it was feeling much better. I'm disappointed, but there's nothing I can do right now. It's something I'll have to play with for the remainder of the season.” Freeland has been playing a bit more recently, averaging 8.3 minutes per game over the last five games, and does not expect to miss time moving forward.
