Blazers C Joel Freeland signs with Russian team

(7/9/2015) The Trail Blazers took another roster hit Thursday when center Joel Freeland reportedly reached an agreement with Russian team CSKA Moscow, per The Oregonian

Freeland, who primarily served as the team's backup center, was hampered by injuries during his two seasons in Portland, losing 23 games to an MCL sprain in his knee last season. 

Freeland marks the fifth Blazer to depart from the 2014-15 squad, with forward LaMarcus Aldridge being the most notable.

(3/14/2015) With the game basically over, Blazers center Joel Freeland and Pistons forward Shawne Williams were ejected from Friday's game for headbutting each other. The two players have been suspended for one game without pay, per the NBA.

It started with Williams giving Freeland a headbutt, then Freeland reciprocated by doing the same thing. The Blazers were up by 21 points with 1:05 left in the game when both players were ejected.

Freeland has missed the last 23 games with a shoulder strain. He last played on Jan. 3. 

Blazers coach Terry Stotts didn't say whether Freeland would play in Sunday's game.

Freeland suffered a partial tear of his rotator cuff on Jan. 3 and has been sidelined ever since. He's an unlikely bet to suit up Friday but may be able to make his return before the end of the month. Freeland has averaged 3.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 31 games.

Stotts was asked if he knew when Freeland would return to the court, and responded by saying "no." Freeland is dealing with a torn rotator cuff, and has been sidelined since Jan. 3. He's been cleared to start shooting, but is expected to miss a few more weeks due to the injury.

(2/6/2015) Trail Blazers announced that Chris Kaman (back) is questionable and Joel Freeland (shoulder) will remain sidelined Saturday night against Dallas, per the team's official website.

Kaman is averaging 9.1 points and 6.8 rebounds through 48 games this season. He was a late scratch Thursday against the Suns due to lower back spasms. Meyers Leonard will see an increased role if the 32-year-old Kaman is unable to play.

He's been able to shoot, but he told the media he'll be out "at least a few weeks".

(1/28/2015) Trail Blazers center Joel Freeland was able to shoot for 20 minutes after Tuesday's practice, reports The Oregonian.

Freeland has been out since Jan. 3 after partially tearing his rotator cuff. While he is still not close to returning, he felt it was a step in the right directions.

"I was encouraged," Freeland said. "It felt good. It didn't any worse when I was shooting. It didn't get any better when I was shooting, either, but all in all, it was a good sign."

Freeland had his arm bent backwards on an attempted block and immediately signaled to the bench that he had suffered an injury while grabbing his shoulder. He scored four points on 1 of 3 shooting in 18 minutes before coming out of the game, adding five rebounds, three blocks and one assist.

(12/27/2014) Trail Blazers center Joel Freeland hauled in a career-high 17 rebounds while scoring six points on 3 of 7 shooting in his team's 114-93 win over the 76ers Friday.

Freeland had managed to post double-digit rebounds just once in his three-year career before Friday, racking up 12 rebounds almost one full year ago while playing 15 minutes. He saw 25 minutes of action against the 76ers, dominating the glass while picking up one assist and one block. The Blazers will take on the Knicks Sunday.

(4/17/2014) Trail Blazers forward Joel Freeland proved himself ready for the playoffs Wednesday, as he returned from a two-month absence due to a knee injury. Freeland played 18 minutes in the game, scoring six points and adding seven rebounds and two assists in the 110-104 win.

After the game, coach Terry Stotts told NBA.SI.com he has no reservations about relying on Freeland in the team's upcoming playoff series against the Rockets, though he will have to play with a knee brace.

Freeland finished the regular season averaging 3.3 points and 3.9 rebounds in 52 games, appearing in one more contest than his rookie season.
