Report: NYPD provoked Hawks F Thabo Sefolosha before arrest

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(4/15/2015) A conflicting story has emerged about the incident involving Hawks forward Thabo Sefolosh's arrest last week.

While the original police account stated that Sefolosha and teammate Pero Antic were arrested after an officer "observed the defendant Thabo Sefolosha run in an aggressive manner towards the direction" of another officer, a source close to Sefolosha told SI.com a conflicting story.

The source said the police officer was the aggressor and not Sefolosha. According to the source, Sefolosha and Antic were attempting to disperse from the area when the police officer followed Sefolosha and Antic.

Instead of running toward the officer as the initial account reported, the source said Sefolosha turned around to ask the officer what his problem was with him. The two began to argue, which led to Sefolosha's arrest for obstruction of a governmental function, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Sefolosha issued a statement Tuesday saying the fractured leg he sustained during the incident was from the NYPD.

(4/11/2015) The NBA is working with the Hawks to gather information on the arrest of forward Thabo Sefolosha, a league spokesman confirmed on Saturday, per ESPN

The league wouldn't say that it was an official investigation of Sefolosha. "We are working with the Hawks organization and local law enforcement to obtain more information about the circumstances surrounding Thabo's arrest," the NBA's Michael Bass said.

Sefolosha was arrested following the Wednesday morning stabbing of Chris Copeland and charged with resisting arrest and interfering with the establishment of a crime scene. by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com

"We don't have nothing to do with what happened with that," Antic said. "We weren't together. We didn't even see the guy and whatever happened, happened way before."

Antic added that he and Sefolosha were at the wrong place at the wrong time and that the issue is now in the hands of the judicial system.

"The only thing I can say is we feel bad for the bad publicity we brought to the Hawks organization, the Hawks family, not by our fault," Antic said.

Despite the ongoing legal matter, Antic said he intends to play in Friday's game against the Hornets.

Hawks' Kent Bazemore won't slow down as a starter

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(2/2/2015) Hawks SG Kent Bazemore is getting increased minutes, but he doesn't plan to pace himself. That's not how he made it to where he is now.

Bazemore went from unrecruited high school player to practice player at Old Dominion. "I didn’t score in practice until like February," he told Matt Winkeljohn of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Undrafted and toiling in the D-League, he earned the attention of Hawks assistant GM Wes Wilcox through his work ethic and his "desperation to be great".

The Hawks signed Bazemore during the offseason, after he spent parts of the previous two years with the Warriors and Lakers.

Recovering from offseason foot surgery, Bazemore played limited minutes early on and found himself buried in the Hawks' rotation. A left Achilles strain to starting SG DeMarre Carroll, followed by right calf strain to backup Thabo Sefolosha gave Bazemore an opportunity, and he hit it at full speed.

Bazemore scored 12 points in 40 minutes off the bench against the trailblazers, earning his first Hawks start on Saturday. He shot 1-for-6, scoring 3 points in the game. Bazemore said starting was an adjustment, but not one that will slow him down.

"It’s different physically,” he told Winkeljohn. “You have to find ways when you’re fatigued and your shot is not falling to help. … I only have one gear, I think, and if I’m out there trying to pace, I’m not going to be as aggressive as I can be."
